The arrival of this competition in Galicia represents a new success in the efforts of the recently re-elected board of directors of Monte Real, headed by José Luis Álvarez and Alechu Retolaza as president and vice president; and the fulfillment of one of the objectives set: that of returning to the MRCYB the international prestige it once had.

After having managed to attract Baiona to the famous 52 SUPER SERIES in 2022 and having hosted the J80 class World Championship in 2023; This year it will be the RC44, another one-design, in a new commitment to the “One design”, with all the teams sailing in identical boats.

The sailboat, created by the considered best skipper in the history of the America’s Cup, the New Zealander Russell Coutts, is a highly competitive boat worth around one million euros. A sailboat built in carbon fiber, very light, 13.45 meters (44 feet), with a large sail area and the most advanced navigation systems.

At the head of these haggling machines are shipowners with great economic potential, who hire their crews by recruiting Olympic medalists, America’s Cup crew members and sailors from the Round the World Sailing Championship. A complete cast of professionals from all over the world who guarantee spectacular regattas wherever they go.

In 2024, this show represented by the RC44 and the 44CUP will stop in Baiona with all the impact that this implies, with the presence of some of the best names in world sailing and figures that speak of an economic return that exceeds one million euros in the venues.

It will be the most international and one of the most important events in the regatta calendar of the Monte Real Yacht Club in 2024, in which a prominent place is once again reserved for its historic Conde de Gondomar Trophy and Prince of Asturias Trophy, which this year They turn 49 and 39 years old respectively, and they will be celebrated, as is tradition, coinciding with the holiday of July 25 and the first weekend of September.

The Repsol Trophy It changes the month this year and moves forward to April (from the 26th to the 28th), so as not to coincide with the 44CUP; and also in April the CdC Trophy (April 20), which this year coincides with the Cíes League – Rande, a new competition organized by several clubs in the Rías Baixas, including Monte Real, with two versions, a winter one (April 20) and an autumn one (September 14).

June will be the month of Galician Championship of Two (June 15), which Monte Real will organize for the thirteenth consecutive year; and in July, in addition to competition with the Count of Gondomar (from the 25th to the 28th), there will be time for leisure with the fourth edition of the Rias Baixas Route, a Xacobean pilgrimage by sea.

The Prince of Asturias Trophy, within which framework the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards, will be held from September 6 to 8; and the J80 will once again have their two leagues own, the winter one (February 10 and 24, March 9 and 23 and April 6) and the autumn one (October 5 and 19, November 9 and 23 and December 14).

The organization of regattas is, along with the promotion of national and international nautical tourism, one of the main objectives of Monte Real, which has nautical training as its third line of action. So much so that the Sailing School will once again have, in 2024, a prominent role in the club’s programming, with dinghy sailing and cruising courses, and adapted sailing activities that will include actions and activities for people with functional diversity, women victims of sexist violence, warded children or people with behavioral problems, among others.

Spanish Cruise Championship: sailing for everyone at a national level

17 boats from 12 communities participate this weekend in Baiona in the Spanish Cruise Championship for teams and autonomous communities, organized by the RFEV and sponsored by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado

The availability of Figaro boats provided by the MRCYB together with other participation facilities open this national cruise ship to amateur teams from all over the territory

(Information: RFEV)

More than 100 sailors, divided into 17 teams that will represent 12 autonomous communities, will meet that weekend (October 7 to 9) in the Spanish Cruise Championship – State Lotteries and Bets Trophy that will be held at Monte Royal Yacht Club of Baiona.

Organized by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation with the collaboration of the MRCYB and the Royal Galician Sailing Federation, this championship is committed to a structure that rewards participation in the territorial calendar and encourages competition among amateur crews. The different teams, proposed by each territorial federation, will enjoy a competition designed to promote and socialize cruising sailing in Spain.

Javier Sanz, president of the RFEV emphasizes the idea of “reward the effort and perseverance of the sailors who go sailing every week in their club”. “Being able to measure yourself against crews from all over Spain on equal terms is a unique opportunity that we hope will become the annual objective of any cruise team anywhere in our country”.

One of the novelties of the competition is that thanks to the sponsorship of Loterías y Apuestas del Estado and the financial support of the RFEV, the participants will not have to pay registration fees and their stay in Baiona will be covered by the organizers of the regatta. In addition, this Spanish Championship will have a parallel social offer, with a village dedicated to sailors in which food and drinks will be offered every night.

The note of color will be seen in the sea, where all the teams will wear custom lycras according to the autonomous community they represent. It should also be noted that the winner of the championship, in addition to the national title, will obtain recognition for the best autonomy in Spain for their territory.

The success of the proposal translates not only into a high participation in this first edition, 17 crews from 12 territorial ones, but also in the fact that these crews are made up of amateur sailors, teams that regularly sail in their club regattas and that have now the opportunity to measure your skills against others from different parts of Spain.

The regional federations represented by one or two teams in this Spanish Cruise Championship are: Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, the Autonomous City of Melilla, the Valencian Community, Castilla la Mancha, Catalonia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, the Principality of Asturias, the Region of Murcia , Basque Country.

The action will begin next Friday and will last until Sunday, sailing in the fleet of Benetau Figaro monotype boats, one more incentive that emphasizes equal conditions for all, as well as ease of participation.

The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona has just presented its sports calendar for 2018, an intense agenda that includes 15 nautical competitions at the highest level, which will be held in the Rías Baixas de Galicia from this January until next month of November.

Among the most important events, it is worth highlighting the Spanish Championship of the J80 class , which the Baionese club will organize by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation at the end of April. There will be 4 days of competition that will bring together the highlights of the Spanish nautical scene in the bay of Baiona. The event will be part of the celebration of one of the most classic regattas of Monte Real, the Repsol Trophy , which this year celebrates its forty-first edition.

Another novelty of the Baiona club for this new year is the return of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race , the oceanic regatta that Monte Real promoted by the hand of the Angra Iate Clube in 2016 and that in July 2018 will experience its second edition. The competition scheme will be the same, with more than 1,700 miles of route divided into two tests, one going between Baiona and Angra do Heroismo (Ilha Terceira – Açores) and a second and last one back to Baiona.

July will also be the month of historical Count of Gondomar Trophy , which will be Spanish Height Championship and which will include, as usual, one of the most attractive sailing events in Galicia, the Baiona – Fisterra – Baiona route, over 100 miles long, rounding the mythical Carrumeiro Chico lighthouse

The first weekend of September will be the turn of the Prince of Asturias Trophy , considered one of the three great regattas currently held in Spain, and in which King Emeritus Don Juan Carlos has been participating for years. As on previous occasions, the competition, now in its thirty-third edition, will include the delivery of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards .

The 2018 Monte Real calendar also includes the celebration of the Galician Solitaire Championship and Dos – IV Rafael Olmedo Memorial , a medium-distance regatta in which the participants will test their strength competing alone or with the help of a single crew member. board. It will be held in June, sharing the month with the II Ria de Vigo Interclub Regatta .

In addition to the competitions open to different classes, the Monte Real has several exclusive regattas scheduled for some specific classes, such as the J80 or 6m monotypes. The former will be able to compete, in addition to the Spanish Championship, in the Infinitus Rent Trophy, which starts next week, and in the J80 Class Autumn League , which will be held from October.

The Comunica Trophy in April and a Radio Control Regatta in October are other appointments at Monte Real, which has also scheduled several tests for the youngest sailors, whom we will see compete in the Baitra Light Sailing Trophy and in the Final of the Baitra Social League MRCYB .

Beyond the competition, the historic club from Baiona will continue promoting, one more year, sailing training in Galicia through its Sailing School, in which light sailing and cruiser sailing classes are taught; and its Adapted Sailing School, in which people with some type of disability sail throughout the year, and for which it will once again organize, for the fourth consecutive year, the Solidarity Vertiathlon , next September 15.
