· The Monte Real Yacht Club organized this Saturday the “I Environmental Awareness Workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment”
· The objective of the activity was to make future generations aware of the need to reduce the use of plastics to avoid the damage they cause
· With sieves and binocular loupes, the participants discovered the reality of microplastics that most of them were not aware of
· The workshop was held thanks to the collaboration of the University of Vigo and the Baiona council and with the involvement of companies such as ABANCA and Gadis
Twenty boys and girls from different schools in Baiona participated this Saturday in the “I Environmental Awareness Workshop on the impact of plastic on the marine environment. Behind the plastic footprint”, an initiative organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club to make children aware of the repercussions that plastics generate in marine ecosystems.
The figures make it very clear. According to UN data, more than 100,000 species die each year from the plastic that pollutes the sea, and it is estimated that within 30 years there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. Some of these plastic residues are visible to the human eye (macroplastics), but to see many others (microplastics and nanoplastics) you have to use magnifying glasses and microscopes.
And that is precisely what the participants in the workshop organized by Monte Real in collaboration with the University of Vigo and the Baiona City Council, and the involvement of ABANCA and Gadis, did this Saturday. After receiving an explanation about the types of existing plastics, their production and their impact on the planet, the children went to the beaches of A Barbeira and A Ribeira to identify and collect them.
They collected more than 8 kilos of plastics and discovered microplastics (of which most of them were not aware of their existence) in the sand with laboratory materials donated by the University of Vigo such as sieves and binocular loupes.
This is the name given to plastic particles that are less than 5 millimeters in size and that are, for the most part, undetectable to the naked eye. Those that drift on the beaches are those that the sea itself expels, after having naturally crushed and degraded the plastics that end up in it. They are barely visible as they blend in with the sand, but they are there, and in recent years, researchers have begun to alert society to their terrible consequences.
One of the first measures that must be applied to reduce the presence of plastics and microplastics in the marine environment is to reduce the dependence and use that human beings have of plastics.
The “I Environmental awareness workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment. Following the footprint of plastic” Taught by the graduate in Marine Sciences and researcher on marine pollution, Noelia Estévez, it ended with an award ceremony for the participants, in which the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, participated; and ecological and sustainable food, with local products and reusable packaging.

· The initiative aims to raise awareness among children in the municipality of Baiona of the impact of plastic waste on the environment, paying special attention to its impact on rivers, seas and oceans
· The workshop, in which companies such as ABANCA and Gadis are also involved, will end with an ecological and sustainable meal for the participants as an example of a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle
Baiona hosts next Saturday, November 17, the “I Environmental awareness workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment. Following the footprint of plastic”, an initiative promoted by the Monte Real Club de Yates in collaboration with the University of Vigo and the Baiona city council, in which companies such as ABANCA and Gadis are also involved.
It is an educational day in which children from the municipality between 7 and 18 years old will be able to recognize the repercussions that plastics have on the environment, paying special attention to the damage they cause to marine ecosystems, and various actions to minimize its impact.
Currently only 9 percent of the plastic produced is recycled, 12 percent is incinerated and the remaining 79 percent goes to landfills or directly into the environment. There are more than 230,000 tons of plastic waste floating on the surface of the different seas of the world and, although more and more is being studied, the full impact of microplastics that are not visible to the naked eye is still unknown.
To shed light on this problem and try to raise awareness among future generations, Monte Real scheduled different activities in different locations in the municipality.
A first part, more theoretical, will include a presentation of the topic at the club’s facilities in Baiona. The types of existing plastics, their production, the routes of entry of waste into rivers, seas and oceans, and their impact on the planet will be explained to the little ones.
In the second part of the workshop, the children will go to the beaches of A Barbeira and A Ribeira, two of the most central and crowded sandbanks in the municipality of Baiona, to participate in a practical session on waste identification and collection. The goal is for them to be able to recognize and classify macroplastics, which they will later deposit in recycling containers.
The activity will also include the search for microplastics, for which laboratory materials provided by the University of Vigo will be used, such as sieves and binocular loupes, since most microplastics cannot be seen with the naked eye.
The “I Environmental awareness workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment. Behind the plastic footprint” will end at the Monte Real Yacht Club facilities with an ecological and sustainable meal, free of plastics, as an example of healthy lifestyles that respect the environment. It will explain the need to change plastic bags for reusable ones, avoid wrapping with transparent film and the trays in which food usually comes, not using glasses, plastic and plastic cutlery, or choose returnable bottles and containers.
With this outreach and environmental education action, which will be taught by the graduate in Marine Sciences and researcher on marine pollution, Noelia Estévez, Monte Real seeks to make the children of the municipality aware of the importance of moving towards a more sustainable consumption model. , recycling plastics and not throwing them anywhere, emphasizing the harmful effects that plastic has on the environment.

With a 6-point margin over Marías-Casas do Telhado of the Portuguese Manuel María Cunha, who is their closest rival, Okofen will seek to widen the distance over their competitors to reaffirm their leadership and secure the place of honor in the championship.
It will do so on a day that is expected to be complicated due to the weather, which announces some rain and winds of more than 15 knots with peaks close to 30, conditions that will make the J80 “fly” in the Bay of Baiona.
It will be on this stage where the committee, chaired by Jano Martín, plans to locate the test field and where, if the planned program is achieved, three windward-leeward regattas will be held starting at three in the afternoon, local time. set for the start of the competition.

· The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona serves as a refuge at this time for three ships on the Rum Route that encountered problems on their transoceanic crossing
· A fourth boat, the Service Civique of Frenchwoman Claire Pruvot, plans to arrive at the Baiona club in the next few hours to fix a leak
· Monte Real has made all its resources available to sailors and the company from Vigo, Velas Gándara, is dealing with the repair of its sails.
The Monte Real Club de Yates is serving as a refuge for three boats participating in the Rum Route, one of the most prestigious transoceanic regattas in the world for solo sailors, which this year celebrates its eleventh edition.
After leaving the French port of Saint Malo on the 4th, the bad weather conditions encountered by the 123 participants, with winds of up to 40 knots and waves of 6 meters, have forced various boats to make technical stops to solve the problems suffered during the journey and avoid further damage.
At this time, Emmanuel Le Roche’s Edenred , class 40, takes refuge in the historic Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona. The French sailor, who is competing for the first time on the Rum Route, suffered breakages in his sails and the Galician company Velas Gándara is fixing them so that he can return to competition as soon as possible.
The storm also baited another Class40 boat, the Carac de Louis Duc, who will remain in the fishing village of Baiona until he solves his problems and can return to Guadeloupe, something that Duc, who is competing for the second time on the Rum Route, hopes to be able to do as quickly as possible.
A fourth ship will arrive at Monte Real in the next few hours. It is the Service Civique of the French Claire Pruvot, who informed the club of the need to use its facilities to solve a leak suffered in the boat.
The refugee skippers in Monte Real have communicated to the club their intention to leave Baiona tomorrow afternoon, once the rain and wind storm that is recorded at this time in Galicia subsides, and that keeps a large part of the Galician coast on alert Orange.
Once they leave the club, they will return to Pointe-Á-Pitre, on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the final destination for these adventurers in what is known as the “Liberty Regatta”, a race where 123 professionals and amateurs compete under the same rules. along a heart-stopping journey of more than 3,500 nautical miles alone.
· Since the Monte Real Club de Yates became the departure port for the Xacobea Nautical Crossing, more than 100 boats have passed through the club on their way to Compostela
Sailing boats that carry out this new modality of the Camino de Santiago obtain a 15 percent discount on club fees
· The Xacobea Nautical Crossing is an initiative of the Xunta de Galicia, Portos de Galicia and ASNAUGA to promote the transit of sailboats through Galician ports
Over a hundred sailboats have arrived at the Monte Real Club de Yates in recent months ready to undertake the Xacobea Nautical Crossing, a new formula for a sailing pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela promoted by the Xunta de Galicia, Portos de Galicia and the Association of Galician Nautical Clubs (ASNAUGA).
Last July, after several months of works and remodeling to adapt the club to the arrival of new visitors, Monte Real became the port of departure for the journey. It was then that it began to receive the first pilgrims, who obtained in Baiona the first of the seals of their Jacobean credential, with which after completing 90 nautical miles under sail and arriving in Santiago, they will be able to obtain their compostela.
Among the main motivations that drive sailors to carry out the Xacobean Nautical Crossing are spiritual and religious incentives, adventurous desires and the desire to discover the Galician estuaries. And it is that, in addition to the Monte Real Yacht Club, which is the departure port of the southern route, another 13 ports distinguished with the Q for Tourist Quality are involved in the proposal, which touch practically the entire Galician coast.
Thus, the landing points are Vigo (Real Club Náutico de Vigo), Cangas (Royal Club Náutico de Rodeira), Sanxenxo (Club Náutico de Portonovo and Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo), San Vicente do Mar (Club Náutico de San Vicente do Mar ), Cabo de Cruz (Club Náutico de Boiro), Riveira (Club Náutico Deportivo de Riveira), Portosín (Royal Club Náutico de Portosín) and Noia. And from the north, Ribadeo (Royal Club Náutico de Ribadeo) Ares, Sada and A Coruña.
Many of them must be visited by pilgrims who, starting from Monte Real, want to reach Santiago and get their Compostela. And they will do so by obtaining a series of benefits or special discounts depending on the yacht clubs where they land.
In the case of the Monte Real Yacht Club, pilgrims obtain a 15 percent discount on the usual rates; and 25 percent if it is a woman who skippers the boat. These are some of the economic measures put in place to promote the initiative together with the actions carried out in the club’s facilities.
In addition, a 100% accessible ramp has been built to guarantee access to the terrace for people with functional diversity and the sanitary facilities have been renovated, adapting them to responsible consumption and energy saving protocols. All this thanks to a grant from the Consellería do Mar of the Xunta de Galicia through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (FEMP) and the Local Action Groups of the Fishing Sector (GALP).
The Monte Real Club de Yates continues to be, one more year, one of the marinas in Galicia with the most boat traffic in its facilities. So far this year, nearly 800 boats have called at Baiona, with the months of June, July and August being the busiest. Deseasonalize this tourist influx, which continues to prefer the summer months for its crossings, is another of the objectives behind the Xacobea Nautical Crossing.
Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen consolidated its leadership in the AXA J80 Autumn League after winning on the second day held this afternoon in the bay of Baiona with complicated weather conditions, rough seas and an intense and shifting wind that forced the committee to modify the regatta course on several occasions.
Despite the circumstances and not having its usual crew, in which Jaime de la Gándara and Hugo Ferreiro were absent, Okofen once again demonstrated why it is among the best J80 in Spain. He did it, as usual, with the tandem Javier de la Gándara – Diego Fernández at the head, and the support, this Saturday, of Javier Porto and Jaime García.
His results were not as regular as on the first day, in which he made full with three first; but the third, first and second places signed today, and the discard that came into play allowing him to erase his worst result from the classification, kept him in first position and further distanced him from his most direct rivals.
With 6 points, Okofen is still in the lead ahead of Marías – Casas do Telhado skippered by the Portuguese Manuel María Cunha, who has 12. Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva, which sailed very well today and managed to cross the finish line among the first, rose to third position and made it onto the provisional podium with 16 points. With 18 points, Pazo de Cea, led on this second day by Iago Alonso and with the addition of Juan Lago to the crew, is fourth in the standings.
From that fourth position, the distances of the rest of the fleet with respect to the J80 that are in the lead are already more pronounced. With 25 points, Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo is in fifth position, followed closely by Luis de Mira’s Namasté with 26.
Fernándo Yáñez’s Cansino closes the classification, dragging the lack of points from the first day in which he did not compete; Javier Martínez Valente’s Cunichán, who today could not score in one of the tests; and Cormorant II by Yago G. Robatto.
The AXA J80 Autumn League organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship, once again, of AXA Seguros, will cross its halfway mark on November 10 with three new tests that will take the one-designs into the final stretch of the competition .
1. OKOFEN · Javier de la Gándara · 6 points
2. MARÍAS – CASAS DO TELHADO · Manuel María Cunha · 12 points
3. NEW MOON · Juan Luis Tuero · 16 points
4. CEA MANOR Iago Alonso 18 points
5. MONDO · Bernardo Macedo · 25 points
This Saturday the second phase of the AXA J80 Autumn League is held in Baiona, led by Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen and Manuel María Cunha’s Marías
· The weather forecasts announce a complicated day due to the intensity of the wind that could reach up to 25 knots
· The competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates will end in November with the last two days in dispute and the awarding of prizes to the winners
This Saturday the AXA J80 Autumn League of the Monte Real Club de Yates returns to the bay of Baiona, which resumes its tests after its inauguration, a fortnight ago, with the victory of Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, who leads the classification followed by Marías – Houses of the Roof by Manuel María Cunha.
At three in the afternoon, the regatta committee, chaired by José Ángel Rodríguez, will start the first of the three tests set out in the competition programme, some windward-leeward routes in which the monotypes must complete two complete laps .
The weather forecasts announce a complicated day due to the intensity of the wind, which could reach up to 25 knots, especially in the first hours of navigation. As the afternoon progresses, its strength will decrease but the rain could also enter the scene. It will be, in any case, a cold day, with maximums that will not exceed 13 degrees.
With these conditions, the J80 participants will draw the new outline of the provisional podium, which today is occupied by Okofen, Marías and Mondo, by Bernardo Macedo; first, second and third respectively. Stalking those top positions, Namasté by Luis de Mira, Pazo de Cea by Cristina González Cominges and Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero appear later in the classification.
A little further down, they are followed by Javier Martínez Valente’s Cunichán; and Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino and Yago González-Robatto’s Cormorán II close the classification without scoring, having withdrawn from the competition on the first day.
· The Monte Real Club de Yates becomes the starting port of the Xacobea Nautical Crossing, a new pilgrimage route to Santiago that runs through the 13 Galician ports and marinas with the Q certification for Tourist Quality
· To obtain the Compostela, maritime pilgrims must sail 90 nautical miles, stamping their credential at the ports of passage, and finish the journey by land to the tomb of the Apostle Santiago.
· An investment of more than 150,000 euros co-financed by Monte Real, the Consellería do Mar de la Xunta de Galicia through the FEMP and the GALP7 has allowed the club to improve its facilities to receive pilgrims
After several months of works and remodeling, everything is now ready at the Monte Real Yacht Club to receive sailors who are going to complete the Camino de Santiago by sea, a new version of the historic pilgrimage to Compostela promoted by the Xunta de Galicia of which the Baionese club is the port of departure.
The “Xacobean Nautical Crossing”, as this new route is called, seeks to offer sailing lovers the possibility of making the Camino de Santiago through the sea and to obtain the Compostela by stamping a pilgrim’s credential in the most outstanding marinas of Galicia.
Of the 45 marinas on the Galician coast with the capacity to receive boats in transit, only the 13 ports distinguished with the Q for Tourist Quality certification are part of the proposal, a selection that seeks to guarantee the pilgrim by sea the attention and services of the highest quality.
Due to its characteristics and historical trajectory, the Monte Real Club de Yates was chosen as the port of departure for the route in its southern version, and an investment of more than 150,000 euros co-financed by the club itself, the Consellería do Mar de la Xunta de Galicia Through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the Local Action Groups of the Fisheries Sector (GALP), they allowed it to improve its facilities and services to receive the pilgrims at the beginning of the journey.
Several works aimed at minimizing the energy consumption of water and electricity, the application of a special discount of 25 percent to boats skippered by women and the construction of an access ramp to facilitate access for people with disabilities were some of the measures put into march within the framework of a plan whose axes were sustainable development, equality between men and women and non-discrimination. In addition to enjoying all the changes made in the club, the pilgrims who start the “Xacobea Nautical Journey” from Baiona will have a 15 percent discount on the usual rates.
Deseasonalize tourism in Galicia, promote nautical tourism and the activity of the community’s marinas and offer an alternative to the traditional pilgrimage routes are the main objectives of a proposal in which, in addition to the Xunta de Galicia, also participates Asnauga, the Association of Nautical Clubs of Galicia.
90 miles under sail between Baiona and Compostela
The Xacobean Nautical Crossing offers sailors the possibility of obtaining the Compostela in a very similar way to how pilgrims who go on foot to Santiago obtain it. Like them, they must travel a minimum distance, in this case 90 nautical miles; and stamp your pilgrim credential at each crossing point.
The Monte Real Club de Yates is the port of departure for the southern route, which passes through Vigo (Real Club Náutico de Vigo), Cangas (Royal Club Náutico de Rodeira), Sanxenxo (Club Náutico de Portonovo and Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo ), San Vicente do Mar (San Vicente do Mar Yacht Club) and Cabo de Cruz (Boiro Yacht Club).
From Boiro there are two possibilities to get to Santiago, either go up the Ulla River to Padrón or Pontecesures and from there continue by land to Compostela; or continue to Riveira (Club Náutico Deportivo de Riveira) and continue through Portosín (Real Club Náutico de Portosín) and Noia to continue from there to Santiago on foot.
In addition to the southern route, there is also a northern route from Ribadeo (Real Club Náutico de Ribadeo) passing through Ares, Sada, A Coruña and Portosín, with the same options for the end by land as the route from the south.
In both cases, the tomb of the Apostle Santiago is the goal of the Jacobean pilgrimage by sea and the Santiago Pilgrim’s Office is the place where sailors must present their stamped pilgrim credential to collect the Compostela.
· Javier de la Gándara’s boat started as the favorite and did not disappoint, signing a full victories in the three races held this afternoon in Baiona
The Marías – Casas do Telhado of the Portuguese Manuel María Cunha was his most direct rival and took second place in the provisional classification
· The complicated weather conditions with a lot of waves and a wind that reached 25 knots caused two boats to withdraw from the competition
The Okofen was placed this Saturday as the leader of the AXA J80 Autumn League, the one-design competition of the Monte Real Club de Yates that held its opening day in Baiona this afternoon.
The crew led by Javier de la Gándara, who started as favourites, took the lead in the classification, signing a full victories in the three races held with a wind that reached 25 knots, complicating the navigation of the sailboats at times.
With Víctor Robleda at the controls, the regatta committee designed a windward-leeward double loop course for the participants, with almost 3 miles in each of the three tasks, with which the participants completed a distance of about 9 miles in this first day, which began punctually at three in the afternoon.
With the first three, Okofen was the clear winner after beating their most direct rival, Marías-Casas do Telhado of the Portuguese Manuel María Cunha, who entered the competition with a bang and ready to give De la Gándara a run for their money. Both led the fleet at all times and were the first to cross the finish line, but the Portuguese crew finally had to settle for three second places in the three races held and second place on the provisional podium of the AXA J80 Autumn League.
Among the rest of the boats, more equality and little difference in points in the following positions of the classification. With 14 points, Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo and Luis de Mira’s Namasté are third and fourth respectively. With 15 points, in the fifth and sixth boxes, they are followed by Cristina González Cominges’ Pazo de Cea, who suffered a lot from the wind in the first test and was unable to finish it; and the New Moon by Juan Luis Tuero.
A little further down, with 19 points, they are followed by Javier Martínez Valente’s Cunichán; and Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino and Yago González-Robatto’s Cormorant II close the classification having withdrawn from the competition on this first day.
The AXA J80 Autumn League returns in 15 days with the second stage of tests, which will be held on October 27 on the same stage and with the same schedule as the opening stage held today.
1. OKOFEN · Javier de la Gándara · 3 points 2. MARÍAS – CASAS DO TELHADO · Manuel María Cunha · 6 points 3. MONDO · Bernardo Macedo · 14 points 4. NAMASTE · Luis de Mira · 14 points 5. CEA MANOR Cristina González Cominges 15 points
· The one-design competition will put an end to the sailing calendar of Monte Real, one of the clubs that organized the most regattas in Galicia in 2018
· The league held with the sponsorship of AXA Seguros opens this Saturday and will last for four days in the months of October and November
Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, recent winner of the title of best J80 of the season in Galicia, will try to revalidate the victory achieved in 2017
After an intense sailing year in which it organized 10 regattas and a solidarity triathlon to promote adapted sailing in Galicia, the Monte Real Club de Yates closes its 2018 sports calendar with the celebration of the AXA J80 Autumn League.
The competition that will put an end to the season of the Baionese club will be held in four stages, during the months of October and November, starting this same Saturday the 13th with the first tests and ending on Saturday the 24th of November with the final day and the prize giving to the winners.
There will be four days in which the participants will be able to face two types of routes according to the weather conditions and what the regatta committee determines. They will be coastal paths, with obligatory steps through different points or beacons; or routes between buoys, of the windward leeward type, with two upwind and two stern.
J80 class sailboats will participate exclusively in the league, a type of boat that the Baiona club has been promoting for years, with the creation of an important fleet based in Baiona, to which monotypes from A Coruña have been added. , Vigo and Portugal.
For them, Monte Real programs two specific trophies every year, the autumn and winter leagues. In addition, in 2018, given the importance of the Galician J80 fleet, the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation delegated the organization of the Spanish J80 Championship to the club, which was held last April in Baiona.
In it, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen had a special role, coming first among the Galician fleet and achieving third place on the national podium. The crew, who this year also won the title of best J80 of the season in Galicia will try to revalidate the victory achieved in 2017 in the AXA J80 Autumn League.
In the previous edition, De la Gándara’s men snatched the victory, on the last day, from Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino, who was leading the competition, and who had to settle for a meritorious second place. Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes closed the podium.

The fishing village of Baiona hosted this Saturday, for the fourth consecutive year, the celebration of the Solidarity Vertiathlon, a charity triathlon organized with the aim of raising funds for the Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club.
On a day in which the fog wanted to be the protagonist, more than 200 athletes from all over Galicia participated in a sports challenge of 750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling and 5 kilometers running, which the fastest could complete without crossing the time border.
59 minutes and 7 seconds was the great mark of Denis Incutti, winner of the fourth edition of the Vertiathlon in the absolute category. The athlete, from the Riveira Swimming Club, cemented his victory in the race, in which he managed to get a greater advantage over his competitors, completing the 5 kilometers around the Parador Nacional de Baiona in just 17 minutes and 36 seconds.
Second and third place went to Xoel Rodríguez, from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club, and Pedro Pablo Bernardez, from the Vilagaría Atenas Running Triathlon, who crossed the finish line separated by just 5 seconds. They also did it less than 30 seconds from the winner, which demonstrates the high quality of the participants and the great rivalry that could be seen in the Baiona triathlon.
María Lois, from the Arcade Infohouse in Santiago, climbed to the top of the women’s podium in the absolute category, with a mark of one hour, 12 minutes and 9 seconds. After collecting the award, he recognized that swimming was the worst test he had, but he managed to regain the lead with the bicycle and in the last 500 meters of the race was where he sentenced. Antía Pazos from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club and María Casaleiro with a one-day license closed the trio of winners with silver and bronze in the absolute women’s category.
The first places in the veterans category were signed by Pedro Pablo Bernárdez, from the Vilagarcía Atenas Running Triathlon, who finished the test in one hour and 35 seconds; Xacob Agra, on one-day leave; and Juan Agrasar, from the Galician Motorbike of Pontevedra.

The Prince of Asturias Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Escuela Naval Militar with the sponsorship of ABANCA, crowned the champions this Sunday of an edition marked by the high level of the participating fleet. The best crews from Galicia and Portugal met one more year in the most important nautical competition in Galicia and did not disappoint in the water, giving a show until the end despite the complicated conditions that characterized this edition.
The wind wanted to be the protagonist and made it very difficult for a regatta committee that, during the three days that the competition lasted, had to adjust and readjust routes and tests so that the sailboats could compete for the trophy with the best possible conditions. Despite these difficulties, finally all the classes in contention were able to enjoy sailing through the Rías Baixas and fill in the classification boxes.
The big boats, ORC classes 0-1, 2 and 3, were blank on the first day of competition, but the second and third came out with a lot of enthusiasm and their tests could not have been more close. The ORC 4, Classics and Open were also left stranded by the wind shortly after the start of Saturday’s test, and today the ones most affected by Eolo’s whims were the one-designs, who were not allowed to compete in any of the scheduled heats.
The Pairo 8 revalidates the title in the MARTIN MILLER ORC 0-1 class
After having won the Rías just a few weeks ago, José Luis Freire’s Pairo 8 arrived in Baiona ready to add another victory in the Príncipe de Asturias and revalidate the title achieved in 2017, and with the four races held he was able to fulfill his wishes. “It was a very close competition since there were 4 or 5 boats in the class that are competing at a high level” assured the skipper of the Pairo and J70 Corinthian European champion Luis Bugallo. “Yesterday we and the April team separated us a bit from the rest and today the play went well for us and we were able to sentence” , he affirmed. The crew of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo won the title of the competition for tall ships, leaving in second place their teammate and most direct rival, the Aceites Abril of the brothers Luis and Jorge Canal. Led by Delmar and Renato Conde, the Portuguese from Porto de Aveiro embroidered the Clube Náutico Boca da Barra pendant in the third drawer of the podium.
Bosch Service Solutions wins in the APRIL ORC 2 OILS class
The Bosch Service Solutions of the Club Marítimo de Canido, with Ramón Ojea at the wheel, was the winner of the Aceites Abril ORC 2 class. The crew arrived at the final day in second position but the first place they achieved in the only test held this Sunday gave them the final victory. “We almost lost the race and in the end we managed to overtake and win by seconds. The truth is that it was a very close Principe, especially between the three boats that finally took the first prizes” commented Ramón Ojea after finishing the regatta. The second prize of the ORC 2 went to Riveira in the hands of Javier Durán’s Santorum & Martínez Group; and the third for Fran Edreira’s Inosa, from Marina Sada.
The Bunda wins the GADIS ORC 3 class
With three firsts in the four races held, Jacobo Solorzano’s Bunda took a more than deserved first prize in the Gadis ORC 3 class. Those from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña had Plan B led by Nuno Ribas on the attack at all times, but the Portuguese from Clube de Vela Atlántico were one point behind the winner and had to settle for climbing to second place on the podium. The trio of honor in the competition was completed by Luis García Trigo’s Unus, who haggled for the Monte Real Club de Yates.
The Balea Dous takes the VOLVO AUTESA ORC 4 class
The Balea Dous canguesa crew, with Luis Pérez at the controls, was the winner of the Volvo Autesa ORC 4 class, inscribing the name of the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira in the history of winners of the Prince of Asturias Trophy. The classification of the first three was completed by the Travesío – La Riviere Conservas de Pablo de la Riva, from the Náutico de Vilagarcía; and the Santiago Roma Rías Baixas by Iñaki Carbajo, from the Club Náutico de Beluso.
The Nautical School of Vigo triumphed in the COMUNICA OPEN class
The team led by Bernal Xian Figueiras aboard the Escuela del Náutico, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, triumphed in the Comunica Open class, taking the first of the three trophies that were distributed at the gala held at the Monte Real Club de Yates. The second and third prizes went to Riveira and Coruña, with the victories of Daniel Ayaso’s Moucho and Manuel Blanco’s Salseiro.
The STORAX CLASSICS class for the Blue Moon
Luis Molina’s Blue Moon took the grand prize of the Storax Clásicos class to the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña, an award that the skipper received from the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club José Luis Álvarez. The rest of the podium boxes were occupied by two AGABACE boats, José Manuel Cores’ Belisa and Fabián Garrido’s Miña Miniña, who came second and third respectively.
Manuel Marías leads Marías to victory in the SOLVENTIS J80 class
The Portuguese Manuel María Cunha led the crew of the Marías – Casas do Telhado to victory in the Solventis J80 class, taking the victory from Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, who started as the favorite after having won in 2016 and 2017. Both were, without a doubt, the most outstanding boats in the 8 meter one-design competition, and the difference in points in the final classification between one and the other was barely one point. The third position in the class went to another boat from the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Cansino owned by the club’s commodore Fernando Yáñez.
The Portuguese from BB Douro repeat victory in the HELLO! LADIES CUP
On board HOLA.COM, the Portuguese from BB Douro We Do Sailing, led by Portuguese 420 vice-champion Marta Ramada, repeated their victory for the second year in a row at ¡HOLA! Ladies Cup. They started as clear contenders for the throne and they did not disappoint, making it clear that they are champions. On board the sailboat were the runner-up in the world of Snipe, Mafalda Pires de Lima, and the Portuguese champions of Laser and 420, Carolina Joao and Joana Azevedo. The HOLA FASHION crew from Santander, led by Magdalena Czernik, came second and the third position went to HOLA! USA from Lourdes Bilbao, with a crew of students from the Sailing School of the Real Club Marítimo del Abra – Real Sporting Club.
Count of Barcelona Award for the best Portuguese ship
Another of the awards given each year by the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy is the Juan de Borbón Count of Barcelona Award for the best ship with a Portuguese crew, which this year went to Porto de Aveiro, led by Delmar Conde, from the Boca da Nautical Club. Bar. The Portuguese fleet had an outstanding presence this year in the Monte Real Club de Yates competition, with 11 boats flying the Portuguese flag on the entry list.
Honorable mention to the inclusive ship AXA SEGUROS
In addition to the classic and one-design ORCs, common in all regattas, the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy saw the participation, for the fourth consecutive year, of an inclusive boat, AXA Seguros, which, with the support of the insurance company and the Ministry of Social Policy of the Xunta de Galicia allowed the navigation of a group of students from the Juan María de Nigrán Center for people with disabilities. Despite not winning in the category in which they competed, at the awards ceremony they received an honorable mention from the General Secretary for Sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez; and the AXA delegate, María del Mar Romero.
Ready for the Solidarity Vertiathlon
After holding its great annual event, the Monte Real Club de Yates still has two more competitions ahead of its 2018 sports calendar: the Baiona Solidarity Vertiathlon and the J80 Autumn League. The fourth edition of the triathlon with which the club raises funds for its Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities will be held in just a few days, on September 15. The Monte Real Club de Yates delivered the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards tonight in Baiona at a gala held as part of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, which the Baiona club has been organizing since Friday with the help of the Military Naval School. Hosted by the Galician Television presenter, Carlos Macía, and the club’s head of communication, Rosana Calvo, the gala was attended by some of the most outstanding athletes on the Spanish nautical scene.
The person in charge of welcoming the attendees was the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez, who took advantage of the occasion to congratulate the Military Naval School, co-organizer of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, for its 75 years of history in Galicia. Álvarez also recalled two anniversaries related to the world of sailing: the 525th anniversary of the arrival of the caravel Pinta in Baiona, which will be celebrated in 2018, and the fifth centenary of the first circumnavigation of the world by Magellan and ElCano, which will be will commemorate in 2019.
The president of Bodegas Terras Gauda, sponsor of the event, succeeded at the microphone. In his speech, José María Fonseca Moretón recalled his beginnings in the world of sailing with his father and the close relationship that unites him with the Monte Real Yacht Club, of which he has been a member for more than 50 years.
After the welcome speeches, the winners followed one another on stage to collect their award and give a few words of thanks. The first to do so was the Valencian Luis Senís, who received from the commanding officer of the Naval Military School, Ignacio Cuartero, the award for the best skipper of the year for the results obtained at the head of the “Clínicas Dr. Senís” (previously Porrón IX ), with which he became the Swan 45 world champion and won the Nations Trophy for the second consecutive year.
The president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, was in charge of giving José María Meseguer from Murcia the award for the best boat of the year, which in 2018 went to the “Pez de Abril”, winner of the two nautical competitions most prestigious in Spain, the Copa de la Reina and the Copa del Rey.
Although they were unable to attend the gala because they were competing in Japan, the 470 class world runners-up, Silvia Mas and Patricia Cantero, also had their minute of tribute at the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala. Silvia’s father, David Mas, thanked the award given to him by the territorial director of ABANCA, Walter Álvarez.
The Mariano Aguado Communication Award went this year to the EFE Agency, for its dissemination of current sailing events in Spain, publicizing the activity of Spanish clubs, teams and athletes. The agency’s sports manager, Luis Villarejo, collected the award from Pilar de Sas.

Rayco Tabares from Lanzarote and part of his team gathered on stage to collect the award given to them by the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez.
Undoubtedly one of the moments that generated the most applause among the audience was the announcement of the prize for the best regatta team, which this year was awarded to MAPFRE for its brilliant performance in the Volvo Ocean Race, in which they achieved a meritorious second position. The trimmer and the bow of the team, the Galician Támara Echegoyen, received the award from the president of Terras Gauda wineries, José María Fonseca Moretón.
After finishing the gala, a great fraternization dinner began in the village of the Prince of Asturias Trophy in which there was no lack of fireworks. The point and end of the day was put by a great party that lasted until well into the morning.
