Baiona hosts for the seventh consecutive year the Galician Solitaire and Two-handed Championship

  • The Royal Galician Sailing Federation once again entrusted the Monte Real Club de Yates with the organization of a competition to be held within the framework of the Inserimos Trophy
  • This is the seventh consecutive year in which the Baionese club is in charge of one of the most exciting and complicated regattas of the nautical season in Galicia
  • The participating sailboats manned by a maximum of two sailors must complete a round trip of about 30 miles between Baiona and the island of Ons
  • The competition will be held next Saturday, June 2, and will be dedicated to the president of Monte Real for more than 40 years, Don Rafael Olmedo Limeses.

Once again this year, the Monte Real Yacht Club will organize the Galician Solitaire and Two-Handed Championship, which will be held next Saturday in the waters of the Rías Baixas, sponsored by Inserimos Energía and dedicated to the man who was president of the club for more than 40 years. years, Don Rafael Olmedo Limeses.

This is the seventh consecutive year in which the Royal Galician Sailing Federation has entrusted the Baionese club with the organization of one of the most exciting and complicated regattas of the sailing season in Galicia due to its navigation requirements, since the participating sailboats can only carry a maximum of two sailors on board.

Among the already confirmed participants will be the current champions, Jean Claude Sarrade and André Amorín, who will try to revalidate the title aboard the Fend la Bise of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

Triumph of Bribón Movistar Clásico and Evelina in the 525th Anniversary of the Arribada Regatta

  • Jane Abascal from Santander and Henrik Andersin from Finland led their crews from the Bribón Movistar Clásico and the Evelina to the top of the podium in the competition organized to commemorate the arrival of the caravel Pinta in Baiona
  • In the Open class of the modern 6 meters, Pedro Campos’ Bribón Movistar (Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo) and Eugenio Galdón’s May Be XIV (Royal Club de Regatas de Cartagena) took silver and bronze, respectively.
  • The Mena of Violeta Álvarez (Royal Yacht Squadron) and the Titia of Mauricio Sánchez-Bella (Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo) finished second and third in the classification of the 6 meters classic
  • The awards ceremony for the regatta organized by the Baiona City Council and the Monte Real Yacht Club was attended by the Xunta de Galicia Secretary for Sports, Marta Míguez

The Bribón Movistar Clásico of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, skippered by the Santander Olympic medalist Jane Abascal, and the Evelina , from the Finnish club Nyländska Jaktklubben, with Henrik Andersin in the lead, won the two golds that were shared out this Sunday in the 525th Anniversary Regatta of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta.

Both crews reached the last stage of the competition as leaders and were able to seal the classification on a day that offered the international 6-meter fleet enviable conditions for sailing, without rain, with little sea and a wind that started from the first moments, both in direction and intensity.

In the category of the oldest boats, the Bribón Movistar Clásico of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, with Abascal at the helm, was undoubtedly the best. He signed three first places in the four contested races, and only let himself be snatched one sleeve by the Mena de Violeta Álvarez, of the Royal Yacht Squadron (Cowes, United Kingdom) who, despite completing a very good regatta, had to settle for silver . The bronze went to the Titia of the President of the Spanish Association of 6 meters, Mauricio Sánchez-Bella, who gained momentum on the final day and rose from fifth position to third.

After receiving the grand prize of the competition from the General Secretary for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez, Abascal took stock of the regatta. It was, according to the Olympian, “an exceptional weekend, with incredible sailing conditions, a perfect wind and great organization from Monte Real, which I am very fond of because they always make me feel at home”.

In the other category in contention, the Modern 6m Open, the victory went to Henrik Andersin’s Evelina , from Nyländska Jaktklubben. The Finns showed what they are capable of on the water and crossed the finish line three times as first.

He only managed to beat them, on one occasion, the Rogue Movistar by Pedro Campos, from the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, who passed his first tests in competition with flying colors after the remodeling carried out on the sailboat. The boat sailed today with different sails than those of the first day, older but more similar to those that the sailboat will finally have, and tomorrow it will return to the Rodman shipyard for some small readjustments for the next regattas. The May Be XIV of the Real Club Náutico de Cartagena completed the podium of winners of the Open category taking the bronze of the competition.

Once the 525th Anniversary Regatta of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta in Baiona has finished, the 6-meter fleet established two years ago in Sanxenxo will continue to prepare for the European Championship, which it plans to attend from September 3 to 6 at the French town of La Trinité. Previously, from July 28 to August 4, the 6m will participate in the 37th Copa del Rey MAPFRE, which this year included them, in its classic and modern divisions, as an invited class.

If the recovery of King Juan Carlos from his knee operation progresses as expected, the monarch emeritus, who could not be present this weekend at the Baiona competition due to medical recommendation, will attend both competitions aboard the new Rogue Movistar , with whom his team hopes to achieve great results. Let us remember that last year, in the Bribón Movistar Clásico , Don Juan Carlos was proclaimed world champion of the class in Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the Monte Real Club de Yates will continue with its 2018 sports calendar, which has as its next appointment the Galician Solitaire and Two-handed Championship. The regatta, which will be held on June 2 in the Rías Baixas, will once again be the Rafael Olmedo Memorial in honor of the man who was president of the club for more than 40 years.

The Bribón Movistar classic and the Evelina, first leaders of the 525th Anniversary of the Arribada Regatta

· The classic Bribón Movistar skippered by Olympian Jane Abascal took the lead in the 6-meter classic category after signing two victories on the first day of competition held this Saturday in the Bay of Baiona

· In the Open category of modern boats, the Finnish boat Evelina won, led by Henrik Andersin, who has been training for months with the Spanish fleet for the European Championship to be held next September in France

· Pedro Campos premiered the new Bribón Movistar in competition with very good feelings about the structural changes made to the boat and managed to be the fastest boat in its category to complete the tests

· The Regatta of the 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council ends tomorrow, Sunday in Baiona with the last two races of the competition and the award ceremony

The Rascal Movistar Classic of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, skippered by the Olympic sailor Jane Abascal, was placed this Saturday as the leader of the Regatta for the 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Carabela Pinta, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council to commemorate the event.

The boat built by José Cusí, who last year was proclaimed world champion in the 6-meter class with King Juan Carlos as skipper, managed to lead the classification after signing two victories in the two races held in the Bay of Baiona .

It also did so with a certain margin over its most direct rival, Violeta Álvarez’s Mena , of the Royal Yacht Squadron, who has the provisional silver pending what happens on the final day tomorrow, Sunday.

The following positions were alternated, in the different races, by Aida skippered by Paloma Botas and Javier de la Gándara at the tiller, who came in fourth in the first test and third in the second; and the Alibaba II of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, led by Miguel Lago, who opened the competition with third place and finally fell to fourth.

In the category of the Open, the most modern boats in the fleet, the victory of the day went to the Finnish Evelina , owned by Henrik Andersin. It is the first foreign boat that joined the Spanish 6-meter fleet to prepare for the European next September in France, and it seems that it has taken the navigation measures very well in the Rías Baixas.

In the regatta he managed to beat the Bribón Movistar of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, which Pedro Campos tested this Saturday for the first time in competition after the modifications made to the boat. Structural changes that, according to Campos, have allowed them to already see results in the water.

“The sensations -says the historical pattern- they are very positive. Today, for example, although we couldn’t win due to a mess with an off-line, measuring times we have seen that we have been the fastest, and above all, we have rolled the boat, which was our priority. Tomorrow – assures Campos- we will go out with different sails and we will readjust all the details that we have been detecting this afternoon in the tests” .

The provisional podium of the Open class is completed by the May Be XIV of the Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena, skippered by Eugenio Galdon.

The competition ends tomorrow, Sunday, with the last two tests, starting at half past twelve, and the awards ceremony for the winners, at five in the afternoon at the Monte Real Club de Yates facilities.

The Monte Real brings together sailing history to commemorate the Arribada

The Monte Real Club de Yates will bring great figures of sailing in Spain to Baiona this weekend to commemorate that the Galician fishing village was the first in the old world to receive the news of the discovery of America. The Arrival of Pinzón to Baiona aboard the caravel Pinta, in 1493, has been the perfect excuse to bring together, 525 years later, historic sailors around a classic boat competition.

Among them we will see a history of Spanish sport, the Olympic sailor Jane Abascal, one of the first gold medalists in an Olympics (Moscow, 1980, in the Flying Dutchman class). The 66-year-old from Santander has also been the Spanish champion of the Snipe class, the Vaurien world champion and, in 1994, he received the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit. After haggling with King Juan Carlos last September in the Prince of Asturias Trophy, Abascal returns to Baiona to take charge of Bribón Movistar .

Jane Abascal haggled with HM King Juan Carlos last year in Baiona

The new Rogue XVI , which debuts tomorrow, Saturday in competition, will be taken care of by one of its main promoters, Galician Pedro Campos, another of the national sailing legends and the only sailor to have won five consecutive world championships. The president of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo is an old acquaintance from Monte Real, of which he is also a member, as he was the patron of the first Spanish team to participate in the Copa América after the challenge presented by the club from Baiona. In the 525th Anniversary Regatta , he will focus on testing all the technological innovations that have been added to the new Rogue , such as a 14-meter fiberglass pole or a steering wheel that replaces the usual rod.

Pedro Campos will be in charge of debuting the new Bribón in competition

Campos en el agua will have to deal with another legend, also Galician, Javier de la Gándara, from Vigo, who will take command of the Aída, a 1939 ship that has been the fastest in the German fleet of its class . After several seasons focused on regattas in the J80 class, Gándara now enters the 6-meter class with the aim of demonstrating, once again, his great ability to masterfully control any type of sailboat. In his youth he stood out in 420 and Snipe, and over the years he added marks to his record in different boats and competitions. His speed record in the Tour of the World in 1989, his victory in the Rolex Fastnet Race in 1993 and also in the Tour of Europe explain why he is one of the most successful sailors in the world.

The historic Javier de la Gándara will compete aboard the Aída

Along with Campos and De la Gándara, there is a third Galician skipper whose sports curriculum gives him a prominent place in the competition, Miguel Lago from Vigo. Winner of the Fastnet Race on the Galicia 93 Pescanova and a Tour of Europe aboard the WOR 60 ocean class, Lago can also boast of having achieved three victories in the prestigious Sardinia Cup and several world championships. He has sailed on the Telefónica , has been a crew member on the Bribón , and has crossed the Atlantic on more than one occasion. Completed the Route of Discovery aboard the Santa Maria, the first catamaran built entirely in Spain; and years later, in 2013, he repeated the feat aboard the VO70 MAPFRE, with which he managed to set a new record on the route, crossing the Atlantic Ocean between Palos de la Frontera and San Salvador in 11 days 7 hours. 38 minutes and 40 seconds.

Miguel Lago in Alibabá II in the latest edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy

In the Regatta of the 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta to Baiona , Lago will compete leading the crew of the Alibabá II, the sailboat of the British owner Peter Dubens, of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, with which two years ago he won the Prince Trophy of Asturias.

Among the rest of the skippers will be the naval engineer Iñigo Echenique aboard the Caprice , from the Club Marítimo de Canido, a ship restored after it was found abandoned in a chicken coop. Cesar Elizaga will take charge of the Ian , a ship from 1929, one of the oldest in the fleet; and the commander of Iberia Mauricio Sánchez-Bella will do the same with the Titia , which last year was proclaimed runner-up in the world. The Evelina of the Finnish Henrik Anderson or the Mena will be other boats that enter the competition.

The tests of the Regatta 525 Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta will begin tomorrow Saturday at half past twelve in the Bay of Baiona and, thanks to the proximity to the coast of the regatta field, they can be seen from the sandbanks and mountains more next.

The fishing village of Baiona has been the setting chosen for the first competition test of the new Bribón , a unique sailboat among its class (6m International) and the first of its kind to be built in the last 15 years.

After completing its construction last year at the Garrido shipyards and recently being remodeled at the Rodman shipyards, the ship will be one of those participating in the Regatta 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta , organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council to commemorate the event.

The new Bribón boasts of having a marked Galician accent, since in addition to being built and remodeled in Galician shipyards, it has Javier Cela behind it, responsible for site engineering; and the historic sailor Pedro Campos, as its main promoter.

“As a result of the recovery of the class in Sanxenxo, we decided to embark on the construction of a new boat with which we could show Galicia’s strategic position in the sector and all its technological capacity. And the new rascal – says Pedro Campos – is the best example of what we are capable of doing in Galicia.”

Among the numerous technological advances that have been applied to the sailboat, designed by Juan K, is a fiberglass mast, the first of its kind to be built in the entire history of the 6m. The intention was to be able to debut it in the world championship held last year in Vancouver (Canada), where King Juan Carlos became world champion in the 6m class, but they did not manage to arrive on time and finally it will be in Galicia where he haggles for first time.

The goal is to test the boat and its innovations ahead of the European Championship to be held in the Brittany town of La Trinité (France) next September, in which the monarch emeritus plans to participate.

Before that, next weekend, we will see him compete in the Regatta 525 Aniversario de la Arribada de la Caravel Pinta , which will continue throughout the weekend. The tests, in which boats of the 6m class will participate exclusively, both in its classic and modern versions, will be held inside the bay of Baiona, very close to the coast, with the aim that anyone who wants to You can enjoy the beauty of sailing these sailboats.

In the official presentation of the event, held this morning at the Monte Real Club de Yates, the vice president of the club, Alejandro Retolaza, showed “very proud that Baiona has been the place chosen for the first official competition of the new Rogue, and that it is also done in such an important regatta -he said- with which one of the most important anniversaries of the fishing village is commemorated”.

The president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez, stressed the close collaboration that the club has had for years with the Baiona city council, with the aim of “making our town a unique place to visit, to live in, to sail and enjoy with the candle”.

The mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, looked back and recalled the Discovery Regatta that Monte Real organized in 1972 and the challenge that it presented years later to the America’s Cup to highlight Baiona’s relations with the American continent and talk of the prolific history of the club in the organization of regattas, something that, according to “guarantees that this weekend’s event will be a complete success.”

At the press conference held this morning at the Monte Real Yacht Club, the deputy delegate for sports from the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Consuelo Besada, and the provincial head of the Xunta de Galicia’s sports service, Daniel Benavides, also took part. Also present were the councilor for culture in Baiona, María Iglesias; and the director of Bodegas Terras Gauda, Enrique Costas, and the managing director of PSA Retail Vigo, Daniel Martín, as collaborators of the event.

The booming 6m class from Galicia to the world

The 6m had its golden age in the 1920s and 1930s, when they led international regattas, and even competed in the Olympic Games in Paris (1924) and, later, in Helsinki (1952).

In Spain there was an important fleet, especially in the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean, which achieved a certain reputation in Europe, but in the 50s and 60s, with the arrival of lighter classes and less expensive construction, they ceased to be so attractive. , and did not regain their popularity until the 1980s.

Today, the momentum of the class is more than evident, with a notable growth of the national and international fleet, and in this panorama, Galicia, and in particular Sanxenxo, has been acquiring more and more prominence. Numerous owners and crews have trusted Pedro Campos and his firm commitment to the class, and have chosen Galicia to keep their boats in Galician ports, repair them in Galician companies and compete in the Galician estuaries.

The crew of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, led by Javier Aguado, won the championship this year after finishing third in 2017

· The Bosch Service Solutions of the Club Marítimo de Canido skippered by Santiago Estévez and Ramón Ojea won the grand prize of the Repsol Trophy

The Maui Jim Sunglasses of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander is the new champion of Spain in the J80 class after winning the national class that was held during the last four days in the bay of Baiona.

The Cantabrians, with Javier Aguado at the helm, picked up their winners’ scepter on Tuesday from Repsol’s Deputy Director of Marine and Fisheries, Carlos Sánchez Nieto, and José Luis Vázquez, president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, who this year held of organizing club and host of the national of the class.

After finishing third in last year’s edition, those from Santander managed to get rid of the thorn in the championship and took Cantabria the big prize in a very close competition, in which they barely beat their teammates by one point and one of their stronger rivals, Jaime Piris’s Mercury, who came second.

It has been a long championship, with all possible wind conditions to haggle. There are teams that have gone better in strong wind conditions and others with a breeze, but the ones that have triumphed are those that have been versatile in all situations”, declared Javier Aguado, skipper of the Maui Jim, who was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the local fleet: “it has grown a lot and they have proven to be a benchmark with a very high competitive level”.

In fact, the bronze in the Spanish J80 Championship went to a local boat, the Okofen of the historic Javier de la Gándara, the best of the entire Galician fleet that competed in the Repsol Trophy. Wearing Monte Real necklace, the Galicians remained in the top positions from the beginning of the competition and finally achieved a meritorious third place.

In the competition for the big boats, the Cruiser-Racer Class , the victory went to Bosch Service Solutions, skippered in the first two races by Santiago Estévez and with its usual skipper, Ramón Ojea, in the final regatta. After a tough one-on-one with Pedro Pazos’ Oral Group Galimplant, the crew of Canido’s Elan 37, who had had to settle for silver in the previous edition, was finally able to win the Repsol Trophy gold. Those from Sanxenxo took second place and the Youkounkoun from the Portonovo Yacht Club, led by Eduardo Segade, was third.

In the Cruiser Class the roles were also reversed with respect to the 2017 edition. Alberto Iglesias managed to place Erizana in second place and Octavio Villalba’s Tutatis completed the podium.
