Monte Real studies the benefits of sailing to treat serious behavior problems

· The Baionese club carried out a pilot navigation test with a group of students from the Panxón (Nigrán) Special Education Center with serious behavioral problems

· The objective of the initiative was to verify how going out sailing can benefit children who have not managed to adapt to traditional education in a very positive way

· The balance of the activity has encouraged the club to seek support to promote a specific program of outings to the sea that allows preventing and treating these disorders

There are currently in Galicia, enrolled in different centers throughout the community, about 8,500 children with behavioral or personality problems, attention deficit or hyperactivity (ADHD). Most of them, 90 percent, are children diagnosed with ADHD, and the remaining 10 percent, according to recent data from the Xunta de Galicia, are affected by serious behavioral disorders.

It is thus called a set of behaviors that imply a persistent opposition to authority figures and social norms, an attitude that leads to serious problems of coexistence with parents, teachers, classmates and, in general, with a large number of people. If they arise in isolation, they do not usually generate too many incidents, but the problem is when these behaviors are maintained over time, intensify with age or lead to aggressive behavior, school absenteeism, drug use or theft.

In the prevention and treatment of these disorders, sport has always been considered a very important factor, since it allows reinforcing positive behaviors and suppressing bad habits. And it is in this field, and more specifically in that of nautical sports, that the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona has begun to work.

After years of working hand in hand with associations of people with functional diversity through its Adapted Sailing School and thanks to the support of administrations such as the Xunta de Galicia, institutions such as Fundación Repsol and companies such as ABANCA, Monte Real now assumes a new challenge, that of helping people with serious behavioral disorders. And the first step it has taken on this path has been to carry out a pilot test of an exit to the sea with a group of students from the Panxón Center for Special Education (Nigrán).

Led by two coaches from the club’s Sailing School, eight students between the ages of 10 and 17 from the Panxón CEE, accompanied by several of their teachers, got on a pneumatic motorboat to explore the Bay of Baiona and participate in several educational activities at points such as the San Xoán beacon, the La Porta channel or the Serralleiras islets.

For several hours, the group of Panxón students were able to discover how to sail in Baiona – Photo © Rosana Calvo

They used nautical charts, allied compasses, mooring grapples, lead lines, ropes and other nautical elements; They sailed through the bay, recognized the Val Miñor from the sea, visited the facilities of Monte Real and reacted in a very positive and proactive way to the scheduled dynamics.

The benefit of the activity was reflected in the subsequent evaluation of coaches and teachers, who showed their satisfaction with the development of the activity and a clear interest in continuing the pilot test with a more extensive outing program.

And it is precisely on this project that Monte Real is now working, which will try to obtain support in order to extend the proposal and involve the largest possible number of centers of this type in it. What the club is looking for is that the nautical sport, and more specifically the sport of sailing, helps to educate, strengthen, offer new resources and tools to people with serious behavioral problems.

The development of emotional intelligence and resilience, the improvement of interpersonal and intrapersonal communication, the acquisition of skills in planning and responsibility, the increase in decision-making capacity and motivation, the exchange of positive experiences through coexistence or teamwork are some of the benefits that sailing can offer this type of person.

The weather plays it again to the jack

Adverse weather forced the opening of the J80 Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, to be suspended for the second time.

· After a failed first attempt due to the absence of wind, the strong gusts recorded this afternoon prevented the inauguration of the classification again

· Before starting the race that was finally cancelled, the fleet observed a minute of silence in memory of sailor Gerardo Alonso

The weather once again played tricks on the J80s participating in the Winter League organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates this Saturday by preventing them, once again, from opening the scoring.

After a first failed attempt due to the absence of wind on what was to be the first day on January 26, the strong gusts recorded this afternoon again forced the committee to suspend the regatta day.

The cancellation occurred once the first leg had started, which was started with a wind of about 17 knots. The jota undertook the route normally but the arrival of a shower brought gusts of over 30 knots and the fleet began to suffer.

Problems were reported in several boats, even abandoning one of them, and the committee decided first to cancel the test and finally, and after verifying that the situation was not going to improve, the regatta day.

A day that began with a minute of silence in memory of sailor Gerardo Alonso, who died last weekend after a long illness; and that will resume next February 23.

New start for the J80 Winter League

· The fleet competing in the Monte Real Club de Yates competition will try to open the scoring after a failed first day due to poor wind

· The three windward-leeward type tests scheduled for the occasion will be held from three in the afternoon in the bay of Baiona

· Before starting the regatta, a minute of silence will be observed in memory of the sailor Gerardo Alonso, a regular in this league who died a few days ago

Tomorrow, Saturday, the second day -the first scoring day- of the J80 class Winter League will be held, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates in the Bay of Baiona for the Galician one-design fleet.

The participating crews will try to open the scoring after a failed first day due to the wind, which did not blow with sufficient intensity and forced the scheduled tests to be suspended.

In this case, the forecasts point to the opposite. They forecast winds above 15 knots that could approach 30 at times, which would add excitement to the one-design regatta day.

The first starting horn will be heard at three in the afternoon, just after the fleet observes a minute of silence in memory of sailor Gerardo Alonso, a regular in this league who died a few days ago after a long fight against the illness he suffered from .

The J80s will compete for the first scores in three double-lap windward-leeward courses in which sailors of the stature of Miguel Lago will be measured, leading Virazón; or the Portuguese 420 vice-champion, Marta Ramada, aboard the Miúdo.

Faces will be seen with regulars from the Monte Real competition, such as the club’s commodore, Fernando Yáñez, at El Cansino; Asturian Juan Luis Tuero at the controls of Luna Nueva; the secretary of the J80 class in Galicia and leader of the Namasté, Luis de Mira; Bernardo Macedo in the Mondo or Javier Martínez Valente in the Cunichán, among others.

The one that will not be on this occasion will be Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, who is in Lanzarote disputing the J80 Champions Cup.

· The one-design championship is the first of the 10 competitions that Monte Real has scheduled for this year

Next weekend the Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates returns to Baiona, with which the J80 class from Galicia inaugurates the 2019 regatta calendar. The competition, which is being held thanks to the support of AXA Seguros, will be held over six days between the months of January and April.

In the previous edition of the J80 Winter League, the winner was Miudo, a Portuguese sailboat from the We Do Sailing club in which Francisca Barros and Afonso Leite, the youngest skippers in the competition, alternated at the tiller. Both were able to keep their crew in the top positions during practically all the tests and settled the championship on the last day.

On this occasion, the Miudo will be led by the Portuguese 420 vice-champion Marta Ramada, one of the most outstanding female sailors in Portugal, recent winner of the Ladies Cup.

The Portuguese will have to compete with great Galician sailing skippers such as Javier de la Gándara or Miguel Lago, who will lead the Okofen and Virazón crews; already regulars in the Monte Real competition such as the Asturian Juan Luis Tuero aboard the Luna Nueva, Luis de Mira leading the Namasté, Bernardo Macedo in the Mondo or Javier Martínez Valente in the Cunichán.

The Monte Real Yacht Club, a smoke-free port

· The Monte Real Yacht Club is officially a smoke-free port from this Friday after establishing the ban on smoking in its slipway and pontoons through which thousands of transits and athletes pass every year

· The Minister of Health of the Xunta de Galicia Jesús Vázquez Almuíña presented the president of the club José Luis Álvarez with the diploma that recognizes the participation of Monte Real in the Galician Network of Smoke-Free Ports

The club is thus ascribed to an initiative created in 2016 with an educational and social awareness purpose in which there is no surveillance or sanctions since what is sought is to achieve a personal commitment from society

The Monte Real Club de Yates is officially a smoke-free port from this Friday. This morning, the Minister of Health of the Xunta de Galicia, Jesús Vázquez Almuíña, presented the president of the entity, José Luis Álvarez, with a diploma that recognizes the participation of Monte Real in the Galician Network of Smoke-Free Ports.

The Baionese club thus joins the Portonovo Yacht Club, the Portosín Real Club Náutico and the Ribadeo Real Club Náutico in an initiative promoted with an educational and social awareness purpose, with the main objective that adults become figures exemplary and set an example with their attitudes, in this case without smoking, to the little ones.

The pontoon and slipway area of the port of the Monte Real Yacht Club, through which thousands of people pass each year between transits and athletes, thus becomes a healthy and sustainable environment in which, from today, you can not smoke. It is a personal commitment that the users of the club will have to assume, since there will be no surveillance or sanctions for those who fail to comply with the rule.

In the delivery of the diploma to Monte Real, the Minister of Health of the Xunta de Galicia, Jesús Vázquez Almuíña, congratulated the club for continuing to be, once again -he said-, one of the pioneering clubs in Galicia at the time to promote initiatives and launch new proposals like this one. What it is about, Almuíña said, is to “make visible that tobacco smoke is not good and that excluding it from all public places will give everyone a better quality of life” .

The president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez, thanked the regional head for his visit to Baiona and promised to continue betting on the environment and health. “Every day ,” Álvarez said. We work so that everyone’s future is better and making our home a smoke-free space is taking another step in that direction” .

Baiona, Corcubión and Rianxo are the three municipalities in Galicia in which all their beaches have been declared “beaches without smoke”, but there are a total of 45 municipalities that have also joined the initiative, with a total of 79 smoke-free beaches. tobacco.

In the case of marinas, the Monte Real Club de Yates is the fourth to join the Galician Network of Smoke-Free Ports, of which the Portonovo Yacht Club, the Portosín Royal Yacht Club and the Royal Ribadeo Nautical Club.

“The Royal Mount – said the president of Portos de Galicia, José Juan Durán- It is the last port to join the network but there are still more than 40 that we want to join as well, so we have room to continue working in the line of excellence that we want for the nautical facilities of Galicia” .

The mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, also took part in the act, who in 2018 received, for the second consecutive year, the gold award from the Smoke-free Beaches initiative of the Xunta de Galicia, after having declared all the beaches of the region tobacco-free. municipality. Baiona thus becomes, said the councilman, an exemplary place with measures ” that impact both the environment, by reducing the number of cigarette butts that end up in the sea, and health, by preventing people from breathing the smoke of smokers” .

Happy Holidays!

Dear friends and friends:

One more year is about to end and it is leaving behind events, experiences and endless memories that will form part of the history of our club.

From the Board of Directors that I am honored to preside over, I would like to send you our most cordial congratulations this Christmas and our best wishes for the coming New Year 2019.

From here we would like to express our recognition to all the sailors, from the most novice to the most experienced, who with their participation in the different competitions, have kept the club’s flag at the top.

Also to the sponsors who, over and over again with their collaboration and support, continue to make the most emblematic regattas of Monte Real great; and to the media that, with their great work, bring to society such an extraordinary sport as sailing.

Everything we do would not be possible without the efforts of each of the club’s collaborators and staff, whose daily work we feel very proud of.

I would not like to end without sending you our warmest regards and hugs for the families of those friends who have left us throughout this year.

Merry Christmas to all!

Jose Luis Alvarez

President MRCYB

All people smile in the same language… and we love to speak and understand each other in that language. Thanks to all of you who throughout this year have visited the Monte Real Yacht Club, attended a course at the MRCYB Sailing School, participated in one of our competitions, enjoyed our parties… and, above all, to those who, by doing so, have given us your smiles. The next year… more SAIL & SMILE!

Monte Real pays tribute to Don Pedro Rivas for his 50 years at the club

The Monte Real Club de Yates paid tribute this Tuesday to one of its oldest members, Don Pedro Rivas, who in 2018 celebrated 50 years as a member of the club.

With the celebration of a meal in his honor and the delivery of a commemorative enamel pendant, Monte Real wanted to recognize the half century that Pedro Rivas has been linked to the club, in which he registered as a member on August 24, 1968.

The recognition of its oldest members is a tradition that Monte Real inaugurated in 2017 with a tribute to Doña Delia Dominguez Gonda, Don Víctor Ruíz Ochoa, Doña María Luisa Curbera Conde and Don José Ramón Curbera Conde, in the year in which they celebrated their 50 years as partners.

On this occasion the honoree was Don Pedro Rivas, who is accompanied in the image by the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez; and the vice-commodore of the club, Genoveva Pereiro.

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen conquered this Saturday the victory of the AXA J80 Autumn League after winning the last day of tests held this afternoon in the bay of Baiona. The team led by the experienced skipper from Vigo sentenced the competition after adding another first place to those they had achieved in previous days.

With five first places, one second and one third in the seven races held since last October, De la Gándara and his team once again demonstrated why they are among the best in the Galician J80 class.

They sentenced the championship with 7 points, taking eight points ahead of their most direct rival, the Marías – Casas do Telhado of the Portuguese Manuel María Cunha who, despite completing very good races throughout the championship, was not able to beat the Okofen in no time.

On board the winning one-design we once again saw a committed team that performs at its best regardless of the weather conditions, which on some days, like today’s, made the fleet’s navigation quite complicated with rough seas and winds above 30 knots at times

In this new edition of the AXA J80 Autumn League, De la Gándara once again had his right-hand man on board, Diego Fernández; with his son Jaime de la Gándara and with Hugo Ferreiro, regulars at Okofen since its inception in J80 competitions. Santi Meygide, Javier Porto and Jaime García were other crew members who joined in some days, to complete the team or replace one of the regulars.
