The Okofen, champion of J80

Led by the historic sailor from Vigo, Javier de la Gándara, the Okofen won this afternoon in Baiona of the J80 Class Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and disputed in the waters of the bay of Baiona in six days since last month from January.

With his usual crew, made up of Diego Fernández, Jaime de la Gándara and Hugo Ferreiro, joined today by Ramón Ferreiro, De la Gándara sentenced a competition in which he remained the leader from the beginning. He signed fourteen first places and two seconds in the sixteen contested races, leaving the rest of the competitors with hardly any chance.

Okofen thus adds a new victory in the one-design competitions held in Galicia, after having won, in recent months, the Prince of Asturias Trophy in the J80 category and the J80 Autumn League of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

Second place in the Winter League went to the Miudo by Storax, a Portuguese-accented boat that saw multiple crews pass through. At the cane were, in the different days, Rui Ramada, Francisca Barros, Alfonso Leite, Tiago Roquete and, in this last stage, Miguel Leite.

The Portuguese did not achieve results as clear as the Okofen, which they could only win once, but having signed a large part of the second places in the different tests allowed them to finally take silver in the competition.

The bronze went to Miguel Lago’s Virazón, another of the regulars on the J80 podiums. After handing over the command of the boat to Javier Rey for several days, Lago returned in this last stage to ensure, with his usual good work, the third position.

One step away from the podium, separated from Virazón by just three points, was Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes; and Cansino by Fernándo Yáñez, patronized today by José de la Gándara; and Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo, achieved fifth and sixth place. The final classification is closed by Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, Pazo de Cea by María Campos, Namasté by Luis de Mira, Alumisel by Willy Caamaño, Marías by Manuel María Cunha and Náutico Cormorán by Francisco Javier Martínez.

The J80 Class Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, was held over six days since last January in the waters of the bay of Baiona. The twelve participating crews completed five initial stages with windward-leeward courses and a coastal regatta in the final stage, held this afternoon.

The end of the competition was put by a fraternization dinner held at the Monte Real facilities, in which the prizes were awarded to the winners.

The J80 Class Winter League is decided this Saturday in Baiona

This Saturday the J80 Class Winter League is decided in Baiona, the one-design competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates that has been held since last January in the waters of the Bay of Baiona.

Starting at three in the afternoon, and with a good weather forecast for navigation, the twelve participating sailboats will compete in the last three regattas scheduled in the sports program.

These last three tests will be the ones that finish designing the winners’ podium, which will be climbed, in all probability, by the Okofen crews, led by Javier de la Gándara from Vigo; and the Miudo by Storax, with Rui Ramada, Francisca Barros, Alfonso Leite and Tiago Roquette alternating at the rod in the different stages.

Except for big last-minute surprises, they will take, respectively, the gold and silver of the competition; and it will be for the bronze that there is a greater dispute. Separated by just two points, Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes, skippered on the last day by Vaurien’s Spanish champion, Pablo Cabello; and Miguel Lago’s Virazón, led by Javier Rey for much of the league, will fight to climb to the bottom of the winners’ podium.

All in all, the more than probable application of a new discard, which would allow the boats to annul their worst result, could significantly modify the score and make boats such as Cansino, owned by Fernándo Yáñez, move up; or Mondo, by Bernardo Macedo, currently in the middle of the provisional classification.

A little further down the table are, in this order, the Pazo de Cea by María Campos, the Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, the Namasté by Luis de Mira, the Alumisel by Willy Caamaño, the Marías by Manuel María Cunha and the Náutico Cormorant by Francisco Javier Martínez.

The last tests of the J80 Class Winter League will be held tomorrow, Saturday, starting at three in the afternoon. The competition program provides for three regattas with a windward-leeward route lasting approximately 35 minutes each. Once finished, in the evening, the Monte Real Yacht Club will host a fellowship dinner for all the participants, in which the prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Sailors from all over Galicia are trained in safety issues at the Monte Real Yacht Club

· Repsol organizes two days of training in safety issues in marinas for workers from different Galician marinas at the Baiona yacht club

· In addition to theoretical classes, attendees participated in several practical sessions on fire fighting and fuel spill containment

· The objective of the training sessions is to provide Galician seafarers with the necessary knowledge to act correctly in the event of an accident

These days the Monte Real Yacht Club is hosting training sessions on safety in marinas organized by Repsol, in which workers from different marinas in Galicia take part.

The attendees are a group of 41 sailors from the Royal Nautical Club of Portosín, the San Vicente do Mar Marina, the Marina Punta Lagoa, the Royal Nautical Club of Vigo, the Baiona Marina and the Monte Real Yacht Club.

The objective of the sessions, given by Repsol’s technical assistance technician, Adrián Pérez, and Repsol’s SMAC (Safety, Environment and Quality) technician, Rosa Pérez, is for sailors to refresh their skills in safety and good practices, and acquire the necessary knowledge to act correctly in the event of an accident.

In addition to the theoretical classes, in which issues related to current safety regulations are addressed, the training sessions include several practical sessions with fuel spill containment and fire fighting exercises.

It was precisely this last practice, that of putting out a fire in the nautical facilities, the one that most caught the attention of the attendees today. The GES of Gondomar also participated in it, which went to Baiona to teach the sailors how to correctly use the different containment methods depending on the conditions and the place where the fire occurs.

The safety sessions organized by Repsol at the Monte Real Yacht Club began this Wednesday and will continue tomorrow, Thursday. Participating in the inauguration this morning were Repsol’s Head of Marine and Fisheries for southern Galicia, Inés González Megido; and the manager of the Monte Real Yacht Club, Óscar Calero.

Okofen touches victory in the J80 Class Winter League

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen caresses the victory of the J80 Class Winter League after adding, this Saturday in Baiona, two new triumphs in the regattas that they celebrate under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

The crew, led by the historic sailor, managed to maintain its impeccable trajectory, signing two first places and one second in the three races held in the bay of Baiona.

De la Gándara did not manage to complete this time, but remains ahead of the competition and manages to move further away from its most direct rival, the Miudo by Storax, which despite having a very good navigation, lost places with respect to the Okofen .

Waiting for what may happen on the last day, in which a new discard will almost certainly come into play, it does not seem likely that the Portuguese, with 27 points after this afternoon’s tests, will be able to overcome the team from Vigo, who they are 13.

If there are no big changes, it would be for them the second place in the J80 Class Winter League, and the one that would be the most close would be the third place. With 53 and 56 points, Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes and Miguel Lago’s Virazón are currently vying for entry on the winners’ podium.

Led by the Spanish champion of the Vaurien class, Pablo Cabello, the Ferralemes today achieved its best result so far in the competition. In the last test this Saturday, and after entering very late in the previous two, he signed a first place that allowed him to improve his position in the league.

Closing the provisional classification are Cansino by Fernándo Yáñez, Mondo by Bernardo Macedo, Pazo de Cea by María Campos, Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, Namasté by Luis de Mira, Alumisel by Willy Caamaño, Marías by Manuel María Cunha and the Nautical Cormorant by Francisco Javier Martínez.

The last stage of the competition will be played next Saturday, March 25, on a day in which the awards ceremony for the winners will also be held.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION AFTER THE FIFTH DAY

  1. Okofen – Javier de la Gandara (13 points)
  2. Miudo by Storax – Alfonso Leite (27 points)
  3. Ferralemes – Pablo Cabello (53 points)
  4. Virazón – Javier Rey (56 points)
  5. Tired – Fernándo Yáñez (67 points)
  6. Mondo – Bernardo Macedo (73 points)
  7. Pazo de Cea – Maria Campos (90 points)
  8. New Moon – Juan Luis Tuero (93 points)
  9. Namasté – Luis de Mira (97 points)

Okofen and Miúdo fight to win the Winter League

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen continues to lead the standings after winning two of the three races held this Saturday in Baiona

· The Miúdo by Storax led by the Portuguese Francisca Barros won one of the tests and managed to close the gap with respect to the leader

· The coincidence of the regatera day with the afternoon of carnival left curious images in the water at the hands of the female crew of the Pazo de Cea

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen remains at the top of the J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates after winning two of the three tests held this Saturday in the bay of Baiona.

The boat skippered by the historic sailor from Vigo only found a rival in Francisca Barros’ Miúdo by Storax, who managed to overcome it in one of the tests. That first place in one of the races, the two seconds he got in the rest of the race, and the discard that was applied after completing twelve tests, allowed the Portuguese to close the gap with the Okofen.

Ten points are what separate, after finishing this fourth day, the first and second classified in the one-design league. Okofen with ten points and Miúdo with twenty, would take, if they manage to maintain results, the gold and silver of the competition. The bronze would be somewhat more close, since dances continue to be produced in that position.

Miguel Lago’s Virazón, skippered by Javier Rey in the last two days, fell to fourth position this Saturday after Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes managed to snatch third place from the provisional podium. Despite everything, the separation between both boats is just three points, so we will have to wait for the next few days to see how the league evolves.

Fernándo Yáñez’s El Cansino, with José de la Gándara at the helm on this fourth day, remains in fifth position; and sixth place continues to be for Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo.

The female crew of the Pazo de Cea, led by María Campos, went up to the seventh drawer this Saturday. A team that also left the curious note of the day, going out to compete with feather headbands on their heads, filling the regatta with a carnival spirit.

The rest of the classification is completed by Namasté by Luis de Mira, Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, Marías by Manuel María Cunha, Alumisel by Willy Caamaño and Náutico Cormorán by Francisco Javier Martínez.

The J80 Class Winter League rests next weekend and resumes in March with the last two days of testing, on the 11th and 25th.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION AFTER THE FOURTH DAY

  1. Okofen – Javier de la Gandara (10 points)
  2. Miudo by Storax – Francisca Barros (20 points)
  3. Ferralemes – Enrique Porto (36 points)
  4. Virazón – Javier Rey (39 points)
  5. Tired – José de la Gándara (49 points)
  6. Mondo – Bernardo Macedo (57 points)
  7. Pazo de Cea – María Campos (70 points)

Baiona’s fishermen will be able to beach their boats at the Monte Real Club de Yates

· The fishermen’s association “La Anunciada” and the Monte Real Yacht Club renewed this Thursday a collaboration agreement for the next 5 years

According to the agreement, the 240 members of the brotherhood will be able to beach their boats at the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club

· In addition to being able to access this and other services, the fishermen of Baiona will benefit from the reduced rates that apply to members of Monte Real

The president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, and the patron saint of the fishermen’s guild “La Anunciada” of Baiona, Susana González, signed this Thursday the renewal of an agreement thanks to which the fishermen of Baiona will be able to carry out the strandings of their boats in the club’s facilities.

According to the agreement, signed for a period of five years, in addition to the boat docking service, with travelift and crane, Monte Real will provide the 240 members of the brotherhood with other services such as carpentry, compressor, frogman, loading battery, cantiño, stays on car and varadero.

It will also do so by applying the reduced rates that the club currently offers its members, considerably more advantageous prices than those that can be found on the market.

For its part, and by way of consideration, the brotherhood of “La Anunciada” will facilitate access to its facilities to those clients of Monte Real who, through organized visits, want to know how the entity works.

With this new agreement, the Monte Real Yacht Club and the fishermen’s association “La Anunciada” renew for five years the ties of friendship and the spirit of collaboration that have united both entities for years.

Okofen continues to rule in the J80 Class Winter League

· The boat skippered by Javier de la Gándara won once again in all the tests held this Saturday in the bay of Baiona

· The Miudo by Storax and the Virazón complete, together with the Okofen, the provisional podium of the competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates

Two new boats joined the J80 fleet of the J80 Class Winter League in Baiona on this third day, the Marías and the Náutico Cormorán

A great regatera day this Saturday in Baiona with the celebration of the third stage of the J80 Class Winter League, in which Okofen continues to command forcefully.

The sailboat skippered by Javier de la Gándara consolidated its leadership in the competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates after winning the three races held this afternoon, moving it even further away from its rivals.

Neither the shifty wind, which made navigation difficult and forced a change of route, nor the good work of some crews, who managed to overcome it at times, prevented Okofen from winning another day.

Miudo by Storax, skippered on this occasion by Rui Ramada, and Manuel María Cunha’s Marías, who joined the Baiona J80 competition this Saturday, were their most direct competitors. They managed to get ahead in certain sections of the regatta, but De la Gándara’s mastery in the last miles of each race allowed him to leave them behind him to always cross the finish line first.

Three new heats for the classification of the J80 Class Winter League and three new victories for Okofen, which consolidates its leadership, already separated by 18 points from the rest of the boats. Following in the classification are Miudo by Storax and Virazón de Miguel Lago, skippered this Saturday by Javier Rey. They are second and third on the provisional podium, with 21 and 28 points respectively, and would get the silver and bronze of the trophy if they maintain their good results.

Further down in the classification, the same positions with which they arrived from the previous day were Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes, Fernándo Yáñez’s Cansino and Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

In the rest of the positions there were changes. Luis de Mira’s Namasté rose from ninth to seventh place, from which Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva fell. The girls from Pazo de Cea, led by María Campos, remain in eighth, and close the classification is Manuel María Cunha’s Marías, who haggled for the first time today in the Winter League; Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel, which did not go out into the water today; and the Náutico Cormorán of Francisco Javier Martínez, who disputed his first regatta in the J80 trophy this Saturday.

After the celebration of this third stage, the competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates has only three days left to finish and see who will win this new edition of the J80 Class Winter League. The next regattas will be held within fifteen days, on Saturday, February 25; and the two final days on Saturday 11 and 25 March.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION AFTER THE THIRD DAY

  1. Okofen – Javier de la Gandara (8 points)
  2. Miudo by Storax – Rui Ramada (21 points)
  3. Virazón – Miguel Lago (28 points)
  4. Ferralemes – Enrique Porto (33 points)
  5. Tired – Fernándo Yáñez (37 points)
  6. Mondo – Bernardo Macedo (56 points)
  7. Namasté – Luis de Mira (59 points)
  8. Pazo de Cea – Maria Campos (61 points)
  9. New Moon – Juan Luis Tuero (62 points)
  10. Marias – Manuel Maria Cunha (76 points)
  11. Alumisel – Willy Caamaño (83 points)

The J80 Class Winter League reaches its halfway point this Saturday in Baiona

The nautical competition organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club celebrates this Saturday in Baiona the third of the six days scheduled on the calendar

· The regattas will be held from three in the afternoon with the addition to the fleet of a new boat, the Cormorant Boat of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo

· After achieving three victories in the previous rounds, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen is at the top of the standings, ten points behind its rivals

The J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates arrives this Saturday at its halfway point with the celebration of the third of the six scheduled days in a regatta calendar that began last January and will last until the end of March.

The competition organized by the Baiona club, in which eleven one-design boats of the J80 class are vying for victory, will begin at three in the afternoon, and will include several regattas with windward-leeward courses in the waters of the Bay of Baiona.

The weather report indicates that the wind will blow from the northeast, with a certain intensity, between five and ten knots, or even exceeding them, with peaks of up to fourteen, which indicates that the regatta committee will be able to start the three scheduled tests .

The historic sailor from Vigo, Javier de la Gándara, was relentless once again in the Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates, a competition that saw its second day this afternoon in Baiona.

Aboard the Okofen and with his usual crew, made up of Jaime de la Gándara, Diego Fernández and Hugo Ferreiro, De la Gándara won the three races held this Saturday in the waters of the bay of Baiona, with which he now has six victories in the six regattas held throughout this month.

Neither the problems they had again with the spinnaker, nor the deep sea that made it difficult for the sailboats to navigate, nor even the good work of other boats such as Francisca Barros’ Miudo by Storax, prevented the Okofen crew from crossing first the finish line in all races run.

With this new full of victories, De la Gándara and his team are increasingly separating themselves from their rivals, whom they already exceed by more than ten points. The closest, in second and third position in the classification, and level on points, are Miudo by Storax and Virazón.

The Portuguese from Miúdo signed three fantastic regattas this afternoon, which allowed them to rise from fifth place to second. They did it with a completely renewed crew compared to the first day. At the controls, Francisca Barros, a very young Portuguese sailor who has been demonstrating her talent aboard these monotypes for some time.

Miguel Lago’s Virazón, another of the classics on the J80 competition podiums, came out, as always, ready to fight, but after a very good first race, he lost some steam and had to settle for third place in the Provisional podium, where he is tied on points with Miúdo.

After six tests and the application of a discard, the classification of the J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates is completed by Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes, Fernándo Yáñez’s Cansino, Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo, Juan’s Luna Nueva Luis Tuero and the Pazo de Cea de María Campos.

Closing the list are Luis de Mira’s Namasté and Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel, who were unable to go out on the water this afternoon to compete in the second day of tests, but who will return to the competition in the third stage, on February 11.

The Secretary General for Sport visits the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School

· The head of sport at the regional level today made her first official visit to the Baionese club after taking office last December

· Marta Míguez verified in situ the operation of a school that provides service throughout the year to hundreds of people with different disabilities

· The Secretary General gave a very positive assessment of the initiative “because of the impact it has on a social group with great relevance and presence in society”

The General Secretary for Sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez, from Ourense, today made her first official visit to the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona after taking office last December.

The head of sport at the regional level wanted to know in situ the operation of the Adapted Sailing School that the Baiona club launched five years ago to bring the sea closer to people with disabilities and allow them to navigate under equal conditions. Some objectives that, in the words of the general secretary, are fully shared by her department.

The Monte Real Adapted Sailing School, said Marta Míguez, is “an initiative with a very important impact for a social group of great relevance and presence in a society in which, unfortunately, it has far fewer opportunities than other people”. That is why, he assured, that the intention of the secretariat is to give continuity to the support that the Xunta de Galicia had been providing for years.

During her visit to Monte Real, accompanied by the Head of the Provincial Sports Service of Pontevedra, Daniel Benavides, the general secretary was received by the president and vice president of the club, José Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Retolaza, as well as by the new manager, Óscar Calero.

It also coincided with a group of students from the Juan María de Nigrán Center, a group that provides services to people with intellectual disabilities and their families, and who have been coming to Baiona for years to sail with the Adapted Sailing School. Míguez shared a few moments of conversation with them and even got on one of the boats in which they previously sailed.
