Baiona awards the winners of the 38th Prince of Asturias Trophy

· In his first participation in the Príncipe de Asturias, Nuno Neves’ Syone Panther from Portugal took victory both in the ABANCA ORC 1-2 class and in the overall overall, while Francisco Edreira’s Urbapaz revalidated the title and hung the gold in the Aceites Abril ORC 3-4 class

The Prince of Asturias Trophy already has new winners. In a most complicated day due to the absence and instability of the wind, the event organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Escuela Naval Militar with the sponsorship of ABANCA closed this Sunday crowning the winners of its thirty-eighth edition .

The conditions were, without a doubt, the great protagonists of the day. In the Cíes Islands area, where the ORC 1-2, 3-4 and J80 classes competed, and with a southeasterly component wind with hardly any pressure, the Race Committee raised the postponement flag at twelve o’clock on noon, the time at which the last tests were scheduled to begin. As the hours passed, things did not improve and finally at half past three in the afternoon the third and last day of competition came to an end. The Open participants, ORC 5 and the Figaro of the Gestilar Ladies Cup had more luck, who were able to add the last sets to their scoreboard.

Victory for the Portuguese Syone Panther of Nuno Neves in the ABANCA ORC 1-2 class. In its first participation in the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, the Lisbon Naval Association boat managed to proclaim itself the winner both in its category and in the ORC absolute general thanks to a great performance on the regatta field, which gave it an advantage of one point over the second classified, the Aceites Abril of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo.

This turnaround in the final classification (the Syone Panther rose to first position, making Pérez Canal’s men fall to second) despite not having held any test this Sunday, was motivated by a request submitted by the Portuguese crew for the review of the results by sections of the last regatta of the championship, a test that was finally canceled and whose resolution benefited the Neves team.

In addition to the second position in this class, Aceites Abril took the North Zone Spain Cup for ORC 1-2, which was put into play in the Baionese competition.

In the classification of the Aceites Abril ORC 3-4 class, the victory remained in the hands of Francisco Edreira’s Urbapaz from Club Náutico Cabanas, who thus revalidated the victory obtained in 2022, with a point advantage over the second classified, the Sailway of Ramón Ojea from the Canido Maritime Club. Behind, the review of results that had given third place to Adegas Terrae led by Vicente Cid, favored the team from Club Marítimo Carrumeiro Raygrass III led by José Antonio Núñez, who finally climbed to third place on the podium.

Second coastal race for Open and ORC 5

The three categories that had a coastal one on their program for this Sunday – the Gadis ORC 5, Volvo Autesa Open 1 and SH Robotic Open 2 classes – played a seven-mile course.

In Gadis ORC 5 there were no surprises and the Cinco Islas Albariño of the Club Náutico de Beluso skippered by Iñaki Carbajo won again with full authority, proclaiming himself the winner of the Príncipe de Asturias ahead of Boeiro de Jaime García (RCN Vigo) and Aquilón de Roberto Telle (MRCYB), second and third respectively.

In Volvo Autesa Open 1, the final victory was awarded to Manuel Blanco’s Salseiro (RCN Coruña). They were followed overall by José Alejandro Martínez’s Edge (RCN Rodeira) in second place and Joao Tourigo’s Five (Club We Do Sailing) was third.

There were no changes at the top of the SH Robotic Open 2 general standings and Fernando Otero’s Argalleiro (RCM Aguete) finished at the top of the final standings ahead of Fernando Rey’s Albarellos (MRCYB) and Alberto González’s Villa de Marín -Cela (CNR Marín), second and third respectively.

In this category, as every year thanks to the support of the Department of Social Policy of the Xunta, the boat of the adapted sailing school of Monte Real with the students of the Juan María de Nigrán Center, the Bellatrix, also competed.

Victory for the Canarian Hotel Princesa Yaiza in Solventis J80

More than tight was this thirty-eighth edition of the Prince in the Solventis J80 class with the first three teams separated by a single point. With the last blank day, the Hotel Princesa Yaiza by Rayco Tabarés of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife became the new champion of the Baionese event this Sunday. A result that reaffirms him as one of the great favorites for the World Cup that will be held on the same regatta course in just two weeks. The second position finally went to the Solintal of Ignacio Camino of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander and third the Coruña Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 of Miguel Fernández (RCN Coruña).

The fleet from Figaros that was playing the twenty-seventh edition of the Gestilar Ladies Cup was also able to compete in the Bay of Baiona regatta course with a light easterly wind that allowed the regatta committee to honk for the last two races of the Prince of Asturias Trophy.

Marta Ramada’s Tutatis, who sails under the Monte Real pennant, took the plunge and won two first places this Sunday, thus making the team the winner of the prestigious women’s event. They also did so with a five point advantage over the second classified, the Erizana sailors from the Real Club Náutico Puerto de Pollensa. Third was Carlota Hernández’s Serralleiras (MRCYB).

Once the competition was over, the awarding of trophies put the finishing touch to the event. In addition to distributing the awards to the winners of the Prince of Asturias Trophy and the Gestilar Ladies Cup, during the ceremony the Conde de Barcelona Don Juan de Borbón award was presented to the best Portuguese crew in the regatta, which went to the Syone Panther, and a special mention to the students of the adapted sailing school of the Juan María de Nigrán Center.

The awards ceremony was chaired by the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, José Luis Álvarez; the commercial director of ABANCA, Gabriel González Eiroa; and the Director Commander of the Naval Military School, Pedro Cardona; and the general director of Terras Gauda, ​​Enrique Costas.

On behalf of the local, provincial and regional administrations, the mayor of Baiona, Jesús Vázquez Almuiña; the vice president of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, Marta Fernández-Tapias and the general secretary for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia, José Ramón Lete Lasa.

Double appointment with the J80 this weekend in Baiona

 

· The Monte Real Club de Yates puts into play this weekend in the waters of the Bay of Baionesa the fourth and fifth days of the Baitra J80 Winter League that enters its final stretch

The J80 fleet that has been taking part in the Baitra J80 Winter League in Baiona since last February has a double date this weekend in the waters of the bay with the celebration of the fourth and fifth days of the championship.

They are the penultimate and penultimate phases of a competition that this year, in which the class World Cup is held in the fishing village of Val Miñor, has acquired a special emotion, with great competitiveness among the crews.

With three stages held and another three pending, the League crosses the equator this weekend with six events on the programme, three per day, on Saturday from three in the afternoon and on Sunday from eleven in the morning.

There will be six new opportunities for the teams to give a new movement to a classification that is led by the current Spanish J80 champion, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, with 9 points.

In second, third and fourth position, in a handkerchief, barely one point apart, are Solventis led by Malalo Bermúdez de Castro (14 points), Fibra Coruña led by Miguel Fernández Vasco (15 points) and Marías led by Portuguese Manel Cunha. (16 points).

With just four races held in the three previous days, in which the wind made navigation difficult for the sailboats, there are still nine more races ahead with which to try to turn the classification around.

As of the sixth round, which is expected to take place this weekend, the teams will be able to discard their worst result, something that will almost certainly redefine the scoring table.

For this Saturday the weather forecast announces a very good wind, from the south, above 15 knots and with gusts that could reach up to 30 knots. On Sunday, despite the fact that less intensity is expected, the reports indicate that the wind will not drop below six knots.

This Friday the most important nautical event to be held in Galicia and one of the most important in Spain throughout this year was presented at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR): the MUNDIAL J80 BAIONA 2023.
Under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Galician Rías Baixas will bring together, from September 18 to 24, the best J80 sailors in the world, who will compete in this great international event in 80 sailboats from different countries of the 5 continents .

After passing through Denmark (2021) and the United States (2022), this will be the first time that the world championship of the class will come to Galicia, a community that has been betting on these one-designs for years, with one of the most important fleets of Spain.

In the presentation of the event, the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, said he felt a mixture of pride and responsibility after having been chosen to organize “such a prestigious event, which will put the focus of the sailing world in Galicia he said . “We will once again demonstrate our club’s ability to organize major events and Galicia’s potential to host top-level sports competitions, offering visitors a unique environment,” he assured.

El Alboroto closes a spectacular season after winning the Gestilar J80 Autumn League

 

· The J80 led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro managed to climb to the top of the Monte Real Club de Yates one-design league podium this Saturday, which has been taking place in Baiona since last October

Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto won this Saturday the Gestilar J80 Autumn League that had been taking place since last October in Baiona Bay under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

He did it, moreover, forcefully, achieving two victories in the two tests held and being, once again, the best of the stage, something he had already achieved in four of the five days that included the one-design group, having only escaped the triumph of the third phase at the hands of Solventis Ribadeo.

The team that under the leadership of Ameneiro completes Javier Aguado, Javier Lago and Juan Lago, was undoubtedly the best in the championship. He ended up with partial scores of 1-1-1-8-4-2-2-1-1 and 21 points in the final standings; and received his award from the delegate of Gestilar in Galicia, Alfonso López; and the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez.

The award was the perfect finishing touch to a spectacular season. El Alboroto began 2022 with the disappointment that the Winter League escaped them at the hands of Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, but from second position, he made it very clear that this season he was going to wage war in the water. And so he did.

In April they won the Comunica Trophy, in May the Repsol Trophy, and in July the Conde de Gondomar Trophy. They were the appetizers of one of the key calls of the season for the J80 fleet, the Spanish Championship, in which they had all their sights set. They went all out and did not disappoint, becoming national class champions.

Now, with this new victory in the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, the Rampage closes 2022 with a more than positive annual balance. Its leader, Juan Carlos Ameneiro, was very satisfied for having more than met -he said- expectations. “We have been improving month by month and we have also done so within a fleet that is increasingly competitive. The truth is that it has been a very good year and we are very happy with the results”.

El Alboroto says goodbye to the year with the feeling of homework done, but already announces that, after the well-deserved rest from the impasse of the Christmas holidays, he will return with more enthusiasm if possible to the competitions. In their sights they have the great event of the 2023 J80 World Cup, which the Monte Real Club de Yates will organize in September in Baiona. It is the first world championship of the class to be held in Galicia and the Ameneiro crew hopes to achieve a great result.

“We have a very close team -says Ameneiro- with a very firm structure, which we have maintained and will continue to maintain without variations for the World Cup. The hard core is formed and now what interests us is to continue advancing in some aspect in which we can still give more of ourselves, such as sailing in stronger winds”.

Until then, Ameneiro’s men will continue to face off against the large J80 fleet that has been revealed in this latest edition of the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, one of the most competitive in recent years.

After five days and ten events held, and after first place for Alboroto (21 points), the winners’ podium was completed by Solventis Ribadeo led by Bruno Gago, César Conde, Sebastián Hermida and Manuel Javier Álvarez (33 points); and Bica de Chisco Catalán, Laureano and Jaime Wizner and Jesús González-Llanos (48 points). They hung the silver and bronze and received their trophies from the Sports deputy of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez; and the Councilor for Sports of Baiona, Andrea Pérez.

Fourth and fifth position went to Nano Yáñez’s Cansino (52 points) and Nicolás Ángel Álvarez’s Pezoas (77 points), the latter being the boat, together with Guillermo Blanco’s I3D Atlántico, in sixth position, the best Results were obtained from those who are not part of the Baiona J80 fleet, since they sail under the pennants of the Redes Maritime Club and the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña respectively.

Among the teams that failed to sneak into the podium or Top 5 positions, the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Cunha deserves special recognition, for which his late entry into the competition (he joined the league months after it started ), weighed him down to ninth position, despite having quasi-perfect partials of 1-1-1-1-2-2 in the tests he played.

Thus, with the closure of the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, the Monte Real Club de Yates also closes its 2022 sports calendar, in which having brought the TP52 SUPER SERIES to Galicia, and celebrated the Championships of España de J80, cruisers and women’s sailing, were some of the most outstanding events, along with the traditional Conde de Gondomar, Príncipe de Asturias (and National Sailing Awards), Comunica and Repsol Trophy, Galician Championship of A Dos and the non-competitive Rías Baixas Route.

New assault of the Gestilar J80 Autumn League this Saturday in Baiona. The Monte Real Club de Yates autumn one-design championship celebrates its second day with Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto leading the table.

The current Spanish champion of the class is leading the competition with perfect partials of 1-1-1, after having won with a full victories in the three races held on the opening day.

For this second stage, the program has scheduled the dispute of another three regattas, and if the conditions allow its celebration, the more than twenty crews of the J80 group will have the opportunity to make their first discard.

This possibility of eliminating the worst result of the table will surely adjust the classification even more, and will force the fleet to try to avoid any error, no matter how small, in the following days. In a 5-stage circuit, with 15 tasks and only 2 discards, any failure can be very expensive for the teams.

Waiting to see what will happen this Saturday, in which the weather announces good conditions for navigation (winds from the south with an average of 7 knots and peaks of up to 12), the three boats that are in the lead are the Alboroto de Juan Carlos Ameneiro (MRCYB), Bica de Chisco Catalán (MRCYB) and Guillermo Blanco’s I3D Atlántico (RCN A CORUÑA).

Two other boats from the organizing club, Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino and Andrés Álvarez’s Solventis Ribadeo, will try to storm the provisional podium from fourth and fifth position.

Dorsia Covirán is crowned in Baiona as the best women’s national team

 

· The boat from the Marina Burriananova (Castellón) armed by Nuria Sánchez and skippered by the Olympian Natalia Vía-Dufresne won the Women’s National League of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation for the second consecutive year

· The crew won the victory after signing podiums in the four phases of a competition that ended with two first places (in Valencia and Galicia) and two second places (in the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands)

· The last stage of the women’s sailing circuit was held this weekend in Baiona under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates and the sponsorship of the Isonor Group and was marked by the storm that affected Baiona

The Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team was crowned this Sunday in Baiona as the best women’s national team. The boat from the Marina Burriananova (Castellón), armed by Nuria Sánchez and skippered by the Olympian Natalia Vía-Dufresne, won the Women’s National Sailing League for the second consecutive year, which had its last stage this weekend at the Monte Real Club of Yachts within the framework of the Grupo Isonor Trophy.

The crew won the victory after signing podiums in the four phases of a competition that ended with two first places in Valencia and Galicia; and two second places in the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands. A victory achieved with a very comfortable margin of points with respect to its most direct rivals and the result of a very good racing season.

After being victorious, the owner of the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team, Nuria Sánchez, was very satisfied to have been able to revalidate the title of the previous edition. “The effort we have made throughout all this time with the “We want to make history” project has been rewarded with many successes like this one, victories that encourage us to continue working. The evolution and commitment of the girls has been very good and we have already set ourselves new goals for 2023”.

The team’s crew, in addition to the owner herself, includes the Olympian Natalia Via-Dufresne, María Torcida, Mar Gil, Carlota Hernández and Martina Ruigómez. Barely 11 years old, the latter, daughter of the outstanding sailor Carlos ‘Puro’ Ruigómez, is the clearest example of the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team’s commitment to promising young sailors in Spain.

“In the team we have always sought to include new crew members, of all ages. It is currently made up of half juniors and half seniors, and this mix of ages and experiences does nothing but enrich and strengthen it.”, says Nuria Sánchez, who not only defends exclusively female sailing, but also mixed teams, which she considers a very good opportunity to give women the boost they need in Spanish sailing.

“Despite all the advances that have been made from different areas, there is still a lot of work to be done so that the number of federative licenses for women continues to grow. And this is something we cannot do alone. We need help from men, we need them to support us and, above all, trust us”, assures the owner of the Dorsia Covirán, who is clear that “sailing in mixed teams in one-design competitions such as the J80, in which strength is not so important, will allow us women to continue growing hand in hand with men, and finally develop more all-female teams .”

The Final of the Women’s Sailing League that took place these days in Baiona was organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation. The tests, which were part of the Iberdrola Women’s Sailing Circuit, were held thanks to the sponsorship of the Isonor Group and with the collaboration of the Xunta de Galicia, the Pontevedra Provincial Council, the Baiona City Council and the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.

Despite the fact that a total of six tests were planned in the program, three per day, the adverse weather conditions left in the Rías Baixas by the Beatrice storm, with a lot of rain and a very intense wind, only allowed the dispute of two sleeves on Saturday.

Both were won by Dorsia Covirán, who won the Isonor Trophy gold. The silver and bronze of this last phase went to the team from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, led by Berta Campos; and the Galician Pazo de Cea, by Rosario García, with a pendant from the Monte Real Yacht Club.

At the awards ceremony, which put an end to the competition, the participants, among other authorities, were the Minister of Equality of the Xunta de Galicia, María Jesús Lorenzana; the commercial director of Grupo Isonor, María Fraguas; and the head of sporting events at the Monte Real Club de Yates, Marga Cameselle.

Cameselle thanked the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation for having chosen Monte Real for the celebration of the last phase of the women’s circuit and highlighted the alignment of this initiative with the club’s “Sailing for Women” program.

“More than a quarter of a century ago ,” he said, we launched the Ladies Cup, a 100 percent female competition, and since then we have not stopped betting on women. We promote exclusively female teams and help them so that they can participate in state competitions; we created specific awards for women in our trophies; we take women victims of sexist violence out on the water… these are some of the things we have done and continue to do, and we still have many more to start”.

The storm, protagonist of the final of the National Women’s Sailing League

 

· An orange alert with sustained winds above 30 knots and gusts of more than 40 delayed the premiere of the final of the National Women’s Sailing League for more than 5 hours, which is being held this weekend in Baiona

· A parenthesis of improvement in the weather allowed the holding of two tests in which the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team prevailed, armed by Nuria Sánchez and skippered by the Olympian Natalia Vía-Dufresne

An orange alert due to a storm with sustained winds above 30 knots and gusts of more than 40 conditioned the premiere of the final of the National Women’s Sailing League that is being held this weekend in Baiona, delaying its start for more than five hours.

From twelve noon, when the tests were scheduled to start, until almost ten past five in the afternoon, when the first and only regatta of the day could finally start, the crews stayed on the ground watching Beatrice, the low pressure system that arrived in Galicia after the passage of the Armand storm, brought with it a maritime storm.

It took hours for the conditions to be conducive to sailing, but the passage of a downpour and the subsequent drop in wind intensity gave a respite to the event, opened a parenthesis of improvement in the weather and the regatta committee was able to set up a field with a quite boarded south wind and about 23 knots of intensity, with peaks of more than 30, even reaching 39 knots on some very specific occasion.

This is how the participating crews, from the Canary Islands, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community and Galicia, competed, competing in fleet and real time, two windward-leeward type tests between buoys.

The winner of both was the Dorsia Coviran Sailing Team, the boat built by Nuria Sánchez and led by the Olympian Natalia Vía-Dufresne who runs for the Marina Burriananova (Castellón).

In the first race, while the rest of the crews stayed more or less together throughout the navigation, the Valencian J80 was always in the lead, at a distance, marking power, and managed to be the first to cross the finish line. The second and third places were occupied by the boat from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, led by Berta Campos; and the canary Code Zero, by Simona Manfredini.

In the second and last regatta of the day, the victory was also for Dorsia, but the team did not have it so easy and had to fight harder for the victory due to the good performance of the Cantabrian Zona Norte de María Sánchez (RCM Santander), who finished second. ; and the Alicante team, which finished third.

Thus, after this first day, the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team, the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante and the Galician Pazo de Cea, with Rosario García at the helm, are first, second and third; and with two disputed tests, the competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the sponsorship of Grupo Isonor, is already valid for scoring in the state circuit.

The start of the Sunday session is scheduled for eleven in the morning and it will be in the afternoon, at the edge of six, when the awards ceremony will be held for the winners, both of the Isonor de Baiona Trophy and of the Iberdrola Women’s Sailing Circuit (Abra-Alicante-Mallorca-Baiona). The event will be attended, among other authorities, by the Minister of Equality of the Xunta de Galicia, the general director and the commercial director of Grupo Isonor; and the delegate of Iberdrola in Galicia.

The Yess, first in the Carrumeiro

 

Rui Ramada’s Yess met all expectations and was the first sailboat to reach and tack the Carrumeiro Chico in the inaugural test of the 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell Grand Prix

· The sailboat of the Monte Real Club de Yates is fighting against itself at this time to reach Baiona as soon as possible and try to break the record of the event that has remained unbeaten since 2011

Solventis by Alberto Moro, Aceites Abril by the Pérez Canal brothers and Magical by Julio Rodríguez maintained an exciting heads-up throughout the event

· The competition continues this Saturday with the second day of tests in which the rest of the fleet will compete in a coastal regatta along the Vigo estuary

Rui Ramada’s Yess fulfilled all the forecasts and expectations placed on it and was the first sailboat to reach and turn the Carrumeiro Chico in the inaugural test of the 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix, which came on stage this Friday in Galicia.

The 63-foot Hanse (just over 19 meters), armed and skippered by the experienced Portuguese navigator, and manned by Pedro Pinto, Nuno Campos, Pedro Azevedo and Óscar Peixoto), rounded the mythical rock of Corcubión at 18:15: 07, seven and a quarter hours after leaving Baiona.

They chose a coastal navigation, stuck to land. They took advantage of the thermals of the estuaries and the result was satisfactory, managing to maintain an almost constant speed of between 8.5 and 9 knots. “Approaching land was, without a doubt, the best decision” , declared Rui Ramada after completing the ascent to the mythical rock. “At times we tried to move away and go a bit further out, but the wind was not so good and we decided to return to the track closer to the coast, which worked very well for us” .

In the second half of the test, which the Yess will take a few hours to complete, the direction of the wind is being key for the boat. With the wind blowing from the north and wearing an asymmetrical spinnaker, the boat will not reach the full speed that a northeast or northwest wind could offer them, and this could disadvantage them with respect to other crews.

In spite of everything, the separation of the Yess from the rest of the fleet is very great and right now it is only fighting against itself, to try to reach Baiona before 22:56, which would allow it to beat the stage record. del Carrumeiro, which Cenor & de Dietrich has held since 2011.

The second crew to reach the Corcubión rock was that of the Solventis, led by Alberto Moro, also from the Monte Real Club de Yates. He did it at 19:39:51, almost an hour and a half after the Yess. Throughout the tour, from the very beginning of the test, he maintained a tough hand in hand with the April Oils, of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal; and Julio Rodríguez’s Magical; and finally managed to overtake them with a certain margin before reaching the key point of Carrumeiro.

The three are, without a doubt, clear contenders for the final victory in this edition of the Count of Gondomar; and all of them, like the Yess, chose to sail within the Cíes archipelago. Only two boats chose the outer layout; the Portuguese Five, by Joao Tourigo; and the Txole, by Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, who defended the choice by assuring that “the wind was well established on the outside and there was good pressure, the winds on the inside being more doubtful” .

Of the 13 boats registered to participate in what is considered the queen of the trophy, only 11 finally came out to compete. The fastest boats are expected to complete the course around midnight and the race could be finished by early morning, or even Saturday morning.

It will be then when the names of the winners will be known, both in real time and in compensated time, in the different classes in contention, although for many of the participants, the real prize is to be able to complete the deep-sea regatta par excellence in Galicia and one of the the most attractive long-distance events on the Spanish nautical scene.

After the Carrumeiro Chico stage, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell Grand Prix still has four races ahead of it. This Saturday there will be a coastal race along the Vigo estuary, on Sunday the classic Vuelta a Ons; and on Monday, the last day of competition, two poles at the Cíes anchorage.

ON-BOARD LOG II Rías Baixas Route

 

This year we repeat the Rías Baixas Route, a pilgrimage by sea from Baiona towards Santiago de Compostela passing through Combarro, Rianxo, A Pobra do Caramiñal, Muros and Portosín.

It is an event with which the club intends to spread the maritime culture, promote nautical tourism, promote the sport of sailing and publicize the potential of Galician ports.

Today, our president summed up in a few words everything that this fantastic route encompasses: “tourism, nature, sport, gastronomy, religion and traditions… some of the best attractions that Galicia can boast of”.

With a dossier with the route, some hats, some flags, a little wine… and, above all, with great enthusiasm. This is how we start this Monday the II Rías Baixas Route, which will take us through some of the most beautiful points of the Galician coast.

After the first meeting of the route, at the club, we left Baiona towards Las Estelas, with sun and good wind, but the fog soon arrived, which became very thick and made it very difficult for us to see.

Luckily it was something punctual, and after crossing the Vigo estuary and arriving at Cabo Home, everything began to improve. We saw the sun again and the heat began to rise, leaving us with perfect conditions for anchoring, eating and swimming in the Aldán area.

To end the day, they were waiting for us in Combarro. Galician Television was there to cover our adventure and there was also paella, ham, wine, soft drinks… and a concert.

It was the perfect end to our first day of sailing!

 

With the sun in the sky and temperatures that announced what would be an intensely hot day, we left Combarro towards Rianxo, about 30 miles away from us.

We reached the wonderful island of Ons with very little wind, but after passing the archipelago everything began to change. A very good north entered, with between 15 and 18 knots, to add a little excitement to the day, and with it we reached Ribeira.

The Ribeira cove was the point chosen by some boats to stop along the way and enjoy a pleasant meal. Other sailboats chose to continue sailing to Rianxo.

As on the first day, music and good food marked the end of the sailing day. A live group, empanadas, tortillas, wine… and an afternoon that invited a dialogue with friends to share the experiences lived while the sun was setting.

The third day of the route was a real delight, very relaxed and enjoying the navigation to the fullest.

We left Rianxo towards A Pobra, with fewer miles traveled than in the previous days, little sea, wind between 15 and 18 knots and with a long stretch to the stern.

Some boats decided to spend the morning in Rianxo and leave for Pobra in the afternoon, while others decided to leave in the morning to anchor in Palmeira and eat there.

Upon arrival at port, a new reception to see how the day went and share pleasant moments with the rest of the crew.

Knowing that we only have a few days left, everything begins to take on a different hue, and we try to take advantage of as much time as possible to enjoy Galicia and its wonderful estuaries.

Today we sail from A Pobra to Muros, a beautiful route with an important point, the Sagres pass. What at first seemed like it could be somewhat complicated for the fleet, because it is a very technical point, ended up being a smooth step. The tailwind and the little wave that there was helped and at all times there were two inflatables pending the entire fleet and the problems that could arise.

After anchoring in the San Francisco cove, with views of Monte Louro, to eat and rest, we undertook the last stretch to Muros, where a great summer night awaited us. We walked around the town (some took the opportunity to get to know it, since they had never been there) and had dinner there.

Last day of sailing! Today we leave Muros on what was possibly the best day of all sailing. Wind, sun, heat… and a trick to give the tour a little more excitement.

We all left Muros together, anchored and ate together in front of Aguieira beach… and enjoyed our last hours on the II Rías Baixas Route.

When we arrived in Portosín, a snack, a concert, and a night of conversations and dancing awaited us…

And so, with a beautiful sunset, we put an end to our nautical journey. Tomorrow the last section awaits us, by land, to Compostela. Good road to all!

They were accompanied at the event by the president of the Galician Tourism Cluster, Cesáreo Pardal; and the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez, who thanked the visit and the award of the distinction, with which the Xunta de Galicia seeks to promote quality tourism and promote itself, in the case of marinas, as a nautical destination of reference.

25 sailboats will undertake a pilgrimage by sea from Baiona next Monday, July 4, towards Santiago de Compostela with different stages that will pass through Combarro, Rianxo, A Pobra do Caramiñal, Muros and Portosín.

This is the second edition of the Rías Baixas Route, a recreational tourism-sports initiative that seeks to spread seafaring culture, promote nautical tourism, promote the sport of sailing and publicize the potential of Galician ports.

Organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Real Club Náutico de Portosín and the Camino de Santiago Ría Muros-Noia association, thanks to the sponsorship of CENOR, the crossing will unite “tourism, nature, sports, gastronomy, religion and traditions… some of the best attractions that Galicia can boast of” , in the words of the president of the MRCYB, José Luis Álvarez.

In the first edition of the route, held last year, 24 boats participated, and this year there will be 25, reaching the limit established by the organization to be able to offer participants a quality experience, both in navigation and in different scales.

The crews will depart from Baiona, from the pontoons of Monte Real, on the morning of Monday, July 4, heading for Combarro, with a distance of 30 miles ahead. On Tuesday the 5th they will complete the 32 miles that separate Combarro from Rianxo; and on Wednesday the 6th they will have as their final destination A Pobra do Caramiñal. They will always sail accompanied by two support vessels and a mother ship, and Muros and Portosín will be the last two ports on the program, to make the last stopover and complete the pilgrimage by sea. From Portosín they will only have to set out on the road to Compostela, this time by land, in order to win the jubilee, something they will do on Saturday, July 9.

With the almost 120 miles traveled by sea, the participants will have the possibility, if they so wish, of obtaining the Compostela, for which a minimum of 90 nautical miles is required, stamping their pilgrim credential at each step.

Baiona elevates the new Galician champions of A Dos

Baiona elevated the new Galician champions of A Dos this Saturday after the celebration of a new edition of the MRW Trophy, in which not only the absolute, mixed and women’s regional titles of navigation in reduced crews were put into play; but also the awards of the VIII Rafael Olmedo Memorial.

The male prizes of the two classes in dispute (ORC and J80) went to the couples formed by Rui Ramada and Óscar Peixoto (ORC) and Nano Yáñez and Manuel Fernández (J80), both from the Monte Real Club de Yates. They were the best in the competition and are, as of today, the new Galician A Dos champions, as stated on the plaques given to them by the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.

In this edition of the Galician Championship, in addition to the men’s prizes, distinctions were awarded again, as had been done in the previous edition for the first time in the history of the competition, to the best female and mixed crews.

The creation of these special categories depended on the number of entries in each of them and managed to form the female category in J80, with the winners being Marta Ramada and Ana Sardiña, from Monte Real; and mixed in ORC, where the couple formed by Brenda Maure and Jacobo Vecino, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, won.

The development of the test was a full-fledged nortada. The north wind blew sharply and with intensity from the start, which occurred promptly at eleven in the morning; to the turning point at the Camouco lighthouse, in Ons; and it remained the same, both in direction and intensity (13-15 knots with peaks of 19) until the finish line, which the regatta committee placed inside the bay of Baiona.

The largest sailboat in the fleet, the Yess (a Hanse 630 E), owned by Rui Ramada and Óscar Peixoto, completed “flying” a total of 35.3 miles. It took just two and a half hours to turn the Camouco and just over four and a half hours to finish the test.

Among the rest of the crews, those of the Deep Blue, the Salaño Dos, the Orión, the Fend la Bise and La María stood out. This group of five boats, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Club Náutico de Cabanas, all with great sailors on board, always remained at the head of the fleet without losing sight of each other. the others.

The Yess (MRCYB) finished the winner of the MRW Trophy in the ORC class, leaving second and third position to Salaño Dos of Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure (RCN Vigo) and Orión of Javier Pérez and Esteban Gañete (MRCYB). In the ORC OPEN class, the Secolite of Javier Rey and Jorge Justo (MRCYB), the Bouvento of David Fontán and Alex Luca de Tena (MRCYB) and the Tutatis of Roy Alonso and Alechu Retolaza (MRCYB) stood on the podium.

These last two boats concentrated all the attention of the Figaros fleet due to the intense hand in hand they maintained throughout the test; and due to the fact that managers from Monte Real (the vice president and sports director at Tutatis) and club coaches competed. Finally, it was the trainers David Fontán and Alex Luca de Tena who won the prize, after gaining distance in the last few miles and completing a great regatta finish.

In the J80 real-time competition, the surprise of the day was given by Francisco Javier Martínez and Alfonso Otero’s SND Cormorán, tacking the first at Camouco; although he finally finished the test in second position behind Cansino de Nano Yáñez and Manuel Fernández, one of the most solvent in the entire test. After the gold and silver of the two Monte Real boats, the bronze of the monotypes went to ¡Ay Carmela! of the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, manned by Juan Martínez Pazó and José Ignacio Correa.

Within the framework of the MRW Trophy, in addition to the Trophy prizes and the plaques to the new Galician Champions of A Dos, the prizes of the VIII Rafael Olmedo Memorial were awarded to the general winners of the two classes in contention: the Yess (ORC) and the Tired (J80). They received them from Rodrigo Olmedo, son of the former president of Monte Real for more than 40 years and to whom this competition has been dedicated for 8 years.

A heads-up sailing through the Rías Baixas with the MRW Trophy

 

· Next Saturday the Galician Two-handed Sailing Championship will be held in the Rías Baixas with a route between Baiona and las Ons in which crews made up of only two people will compete

· This is the eleventh consecutive year that the Royal Galician Sailing Federation delegates the organization of a test with which the club pays tribute to its historic president Rafael Olmedo to the Monte Real Club de Yates

In addition to a general category from which the name of the new autonomous champions of the class will come out, the titles of mixed champions and female champions will be put into contention

A hand in hand sailing through the Rías Baixas. That will be the Galician Two-handed Championship that will be held next Saturday under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates and with the sponsorship of MRW.

The Royal Galician Sailing Federation has delegated, for yet another year -and there are now eleven- in the Baionese club the organization of one of the most exciting sailing events in Galicia, not so much because of its route, but also because of the characteristics of the competition, in which only two people will go on board the sailboats.

A skipper and a single crew member who must take care of both the tactics and the maneuvers of the boat throughout the more than 35 nautical miles that it takes to complete the route between Baiona and the island of Ons, which the sailboats must reach before return back to Bayonne.

In their navigation they will pass by the Carallones and La Negra beacons and will continue to climb, leaving aside the archipelago of the Cíes Islands and the Onza Island before reaching the Camouco lighthouse, northeast of the Ons Island, in front of Cova do Wolf. Once there and after turning the lighthouse, they will start the descent to Baiona, where the finish line will be waiting for them.

With a few days to go before the registration deadline closes, there are already more than twenty boats registered to participate in the championship and the organization hopes to reach thirty. They will be grouped into two classes: cruiser and J80; and in both there will be -if a minimum of inscriptions is reached- three categories: general, mixed and feminine.

In the cruise class we will see people like Javier Pérez and Esteban Gañete aboard the Orión; Javier Rey and Jorge Justo at the Secolite; Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure crewing the Salaño Dos; Vicente Cid and Javier Fernández-Ahuja in Deep Blue 2.1; or Agustín Marquina and Fernando Rey in the Erizana, among others.

They will compete in compensated times making the difference with the J80, the other class in contention, which will do it in real time. On board the 8 meters there will be some of the usual sailors from the Monte Real one-design leagues, such as the couple formed by Luis de Mira and Susana Baena, from the club itself; Juan Martínez Pazó and José Ignacio Correa, from the Bouzas Maritime School; or Rafael Blanco and Alejandro Vázquez, from the Real Club Náutico de Portosín.

In addition to the prizes of the MRW Trophy and the Galician Two-Handed Championship, the competition will deliver two special trophies, those related to the Rafael Olmedo Memorial, with which the Monte Real Yacht Club honors its former president for more than 40 years. They will be taken by the best classified in cruiser and J80.

The competition, which can be followed live on the Monte Real website (www.mrcyb.es) thanks to a virtual reality system, will begin on Saturday at eleven in the morning. Previously, the day on Friday will be devoted to measurements, security controls and meeting of patterns. And the awards ceremony will take place at eight o’clock on Saturday afternoon in the gardens of the Baiones club.

Some of those who have already confirmed their attendance at the award ceremony are the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez; the executive director of MRW Vigo and sponsor of the competition, Santos Almeida; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the deputy for Sports of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez. The Thai Vayu surprises at the premiere of the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES Baiona Sailing Week

 

· The last team to join the circuit of the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES gave a surprise this Tuesday by placing second tied with the leader

Hasso Platner’s South African Phoenix is first in the provisional classification thanks to some risky decisions that led him to take different paths from the rest of the fleet

Despite the fact that the start of the tests had to be delayed for an hour due to lack of wind, the Rías Baixas finally offered the fleet splendid conditions for sailing

After the official practices on Monday, the appointment with the TP52 took a more serious turn this Tuesday with the entry into play of the first scores and the surprise of the day was given by the Thai boat Vayu, debutant on the circuit. The Thais had an exceptional performance in Galician waters and left much more experienced teams behind.

Led by Don Whitcraft and with the tactics of the British Olympic medalist Nick Rogers, the team reinforced its crew in Baiona with the incorporation of Antonio “Ñeti” Cuervas-Mons, who lives in Vigo.

“The key today has been that we have had a couple of very good starts that have allowed us to be in the leading group at the first mark, and from then on it is easier to maintain that position. The tactician has read the course very well, especially in the first sterns, always going to the right, but above all it should be noted that Don, the helmsman, has handled the boat like a true professional. Today he has had nothing to envy the other skippers, he has taken the boat that gives pleasure”, explained Cuervas-Mons at the end of the regatta.

The debut of the 52 SUPER SERIES in Galician waters was a complete success. The regatta area located at the entrance to the Vigo estuary presented very good northwesterly wind conditions that made it possible to hold the first two races of the ten that make up the program in Baiona. The contest began with winds of 8-9 knots at the start of the first heat of the day and increased to 13-14 at the start of the second, always with practically flat seas, ideal conditions for the TP52 competition.

Despite Vayu’s surprise, the first test of the season was quite a show of strength for Hasso Platner’s Phoenix. Olympic champion Tom Slingsby, tactician for the South African boat, knew how to read a race course unprecedented on the circuit better than his rivals when he pointed to the right side of the course against the decision of the rest of the fleet to go to the left.

After an initial few minutes led by Interlodge at the head of the bulk of the field, Phoenix emerged from the opposite end of the field and took the lead midway through the first stage to start a rare breakout in the 52 SUPER SERIES arena. More than two minutes of advantage in the finish line confirmed the candidacy of the Phoenix to the group of favorites in this start of the season.

Second came the Vayu of the Whitcraft family, the great surprise in Baiona. The Thai boat was at the head of the chasing group from the first pass through the buoy and knew how to defend itself from the attacks of rivals with more experience in the circuit, signing a solid second ahead of the winner of the 52 SUPER SERIES 2021 and current world champion of TP52, the American Sled, who today recovered his owner Takashi Okura at the helm.

The second round of the day went to Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon, who opted for the right side of the field, an area that was once again the winning bet of the day, although not as decisive as in the previous test. The tandem formed by the American tactician John Kostecki and the Mallorcan strategist Jordi Calafat managed to make up for the discreet fifth of the first assault with a valuable victory that allowed him to rise to third place in the provisional standings.

Behind the German boat, Phoenix and Vayu staged an exciting duel for second place, which opted for the Thai boat by only three seconds at the finish line. The sum of the two partials of the day allowed Phoenix (1+3) to return to Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona (MRCYB) as the first leader of the season, tied on points with Vayu (2+2).

The action of the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES Baiona Sailing Week returns tomorrow, Wednesday, Wednesday, starting at one in the afternoon, with the first tests. Prior to the competition, moments of relaxation in the village of Monte Real, with breakfasts and meetings of the crews and technical teams; and in the afternoon, at the end of the tests, the village opens again for tastings of Terras Gauda, Martin Miller’s Gin, Estrella Galicia and Coren, among others.

“It is a complex course that does not usually host regattas, but it is really spectacular: With conditions like those of today’s second regatta, it is a regatta course that is difficult to improve, with about 15 knots, flat sea, and above all in an environment as incredible as the Cíes Islands and the Vigo estuary. On days like today, there are few places in the world that can beat it.”

“The first one didn’t go well, they squashed us quickly, in the first two decisions we weren’t right and we had to come back. In the first one we were a little scared because it was the beginning of the day, and sometimes the right doesn’t pay that much, but by the time we wanted to change to the right it was too late. In the second, with the wind already established, we had a very clear right and we were right, but we had to fight a lot. A little strange days, but that’s the beauty of this place.

“I think we’re picking up where we left off last year, which is good. The boat is running well and this new keel fin seems to be doing what it is supposed to. And we have some new candles, which always helps. Today was all about linking up the roles, there was a very gusty breeze and Tom (Slingsby, tactician) did a good job. I think we have a little confidence. We know that we can do well, that we have good boat speed. We have been practicing maneuvers, penalties, spinnaker changes. We have confidence in him (Slingsby) and he has confidence in us. This is very important, people make an effort and do their job very well”.

“It has been quite a challenge. Today we did a fourth and a fifth. It is a difficult place to navigate. At the first mark of the second regatta we were third, halfway through the course we were last and we were fifth again. The disappointing thing about the second race is that we started pretty well and failed on the first stern, but we weren’t the only ones so you feel better about that. But you want to be perfect in all your decisions. In that sense, it is a very complicated course, with many challenges and we were not aggressive enough. The 52 SUPER SERIES hoist the sails of their tenth anniversary in Baiona

 

· The Monte Real Club de Yates hosted this Friday the official presentation of the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES · BAIONA SAILING WEEK that will be held in the Rías Baixas for a whole week starting this Saturday

· Three American teams, two English, one German, one Turkish, one South African and a ninth Thai will compete in the first round of the season of the most important monohull circuit in the world

· The nine sailboats valued at more than 22 million euros are waiting in the waters of the bay of Baiona for the crews to take them out this weekend to carry out the first training sessions prior to the regattas

· Some of the teams have recruited the most outstanding strategists of the Galician nautical scene to help them better understand the navigation area, the winds and conditions that can be found

· The economic impact that this sporting event sponsored by ABANCA and Turismo de Galicia through the Xacobeo will have in the Val Miñor region is valued at more than two million euros

Two years after the announcement that Galicia would be the new venue for the circuit and after having overcome the worst moments of the COVID pandemic, which forced its celebration to be postponed for a year, the most important monohull circuit in the world, the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES , hoists its sails in Baiona.

Starting tomorrow, Saturday and for a whole week, the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES · Baiona Sailing Week, organized and officially presented this Friday by the Monte Real Club de Yates, will bring together nine international teams : three North Americans (Sled, Quantum Racing and Interlodge), two English (Alegre and Gladiator), one German (Platoon), one Turkish (Provezza) and one Thai (Team Vayu).

The nine sailboats that will enter the competition, each valued at more than two and a half million euros, will be led by their millionaire owners, businessmen from different sectors united by their love for sailing and top competition. They are Doug DeVos, Austin and Gwen Fragomen, Takashi Okura, Andy Soriano, Tom Langley, Ergin Imre, Hasso Platner, and Tom and Kevin Whitcraft.

In each of the SUPER SERIES campaigns in which they participate, these owners They invest close to two million euros , which they allocate to research and development of technologies for their boats and to hire the best sailors, including Olympic medalists, world champions and America’s Cup winners.

Among this select group of athletes there is a small but outstanding number of Spanish sailors . People like Xabi Fernández (Gladiator), Joan Vila and Pedro Mas (Interlodge), Juan Meseguer, Joan Fullana and Nacho Postigo (Provezza), and Jordi Calafat, Javier Plaza, Víctor Mariño and Pablo Torrado (Platoon). These last two, Mariño and Torrado, will act as ambassadors in their land, since they are both Galician.

Galicia will be present in the competition through them and also thanks to the signing, by certain teams, of some of the best regatta strategists in the Galician estuaries , such as Pablo Iglesias, Gonzalo Araujo or Antonio Otero, among others. They will be in charge of giving the teams that have hired them the keys to better understand the navigation area, the winds and the conditions that can be found in the Cíes Islands anchorage.

The Atlantic Islands National Park will be the main venue for the tests, which will last from next Tuesday the 24th to Saturday the 28th, after the free practice sessions on Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd; and the official training on Monday 23.

The nine boats in competition will compete in windward-leeward tasks between buoys , with four sections (two upwind and two downwind), and a total distance that will move between one and a half miles and two nautical miles.

There is also the possibility that one day the windward-leeward will be changed for a coastal regatta through the Rías Baixas, with a route yet to be determined. Both in one type of test and in the other, the boat that completes them first wins, without any type of time compensation.

This real-time competition , without any type of final adjustment, is the one that most attracts the crews and the one that will make the regattas more attractive and exciting for the public. With practically identical boats, which follow fixed measurement rules (sail area, length, beam, displacement, draft, mast height and weight), the innovations that have been applied to the boats and the expertise of the crews will be the ones that mark the differences, although these will be practically minimal and the victories will be very disputed.

The ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES · Baiona Sailing Week, presented this Friday at the Monte Real Club de Yates, will be theThe first of the five TP52 events in 2022 : Baiona in May, Cascais (Portugal) in June, Puerto Portals in July, Scarlino (Italy) in September and Barcelona in October. It will also be the first time that the competition has landed in Galician waters, and it will do so in a very special year, a decade after its creation, in 2012.

The sporting event, sponsored by ABANCA and Turismo de Galicia through Xacobeo , and supported by the Pontevedra Provincial Council and the Baiona City Council, will leave an economic impact on the Val Miñor region valued at 2 million euros. Accommodation, restaurants, facilities, transport, logistics, nautical or design companies are some of the sectors that have benefited from the arrival of the 52 SUPER SERIES in Galicia.

How to follow the 52 SUPER SERIES?

All those who wish to follow the development of the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES – BAIONA SAILING WEEK , from May 23 to 28, know that you will have several options.

FROM THE MOBILE, TABLET OR COMPUTER: VIRTUAL REALITY

Through the website of the 52 SUPER SERIES ( www.52superseries.com ) and thanks to a virtual reality system, you will be able to follow each and every one of the tests live, every day of competition from the start of the same (scheduled for 12:30)

FROM GROUND: GIANT SCREEN

As of Friday 27 there will be a village installed in the area of La Palma, in Baiona, so that anyone who wishes can see the outcome of the competition through a large screen that will reproduce the latest tests in virtual reality.

FROM THE SEA: CATAMARAN

A Naviera Nabia catamaran will follow the test from the sea on May 26, 27 and 28. The boat will leave from the Baiona maritime station and will approach the regatta area. It will be in the water for approximately 4 hours and passengers will be able to follow the tests with live comments. The price of the tickets is 15 euros for adults and 10 euros for children.

FROM THE SEA: PRIVATE BOATS

People who have their own boat and want to approach the regatta area must meet a series of requirements. It must be located more than 200 meters from the starting line or more than 100 meters from the windward buoy. Those who want to position themselves between one point and another must always stand outside the lay line, at least 200 meters away.

The container unloading operation of the 52 SUPER SERIES begins

 

This afternoon began in Baiona the operation of unloading and placing the 18 containers of the crews and organization of the 52 SUPER SERIES that arrived in Vigo last week aboard the same freighter that brought the TP52.

The logistics operation, led by the international company Peters & May, will last throughout the day and tomorrow, Tuesday, all the containers are expected to be perfectly installed in the parking lot of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

It is a complicated operation due to the limited space and because it is an area of special heritage interest. Also due to the need to avoid disturbances in traffic flow in Baiona.

“The difficulty of this logistics operation for the 52 SUPER SERIES is to regulate the traffic of the trucks so that the town is not blocked. We have a truck inside the Parador and another outside working, and on the outskirts of Baiona there will also be a filtering area for trucks so that they enter little by little and their circulation has the least impact. Inside the Monte Real, where the containers are being unloaded and placed, is the critical point of the operation, since the space is very small and everything is calculated to the millimeter” , Justo Gosalbes, manager of Peters & May for Spain and Portugal and responsible for this operation, told us.

Countdown to Baiona Sailing Week

 

The ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES – Baiona Sailing Week will premiere the 2022 season of the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES from May 23 to 28

· The Monte Real Club de Yates will host the nine teams of the circuit that will make their debut in the surroundings of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia

Víctor Mariño, from Vigo, crew member aboard the double world champion Platoon, is eager to compete in the waters in which he learned to navigate

· The president of the MRCYB assures that the arrival of the SUPER SERIES in Baiona will be a milestone in the history of sport in Galicia

· The event will be officially presented next Friday, May 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Monte Real Club de Yates facilities

The countdown begins for the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES – Baiona Sailing Week. The popular Galician fishing village will host the first round of the 52 SUPER SERIES season from May 23 to 28, and will bring together the nine candidates for the 2022 title.

In Baiona, the German Platoon owned by Harm Müller-Spreer will compete; the Americans Quantum Racing (Doug DeVos), Interlodge (Austin and Gwen Fragomen) and Sled (Takashi Okura); the British Alegre (Andy Soriano) and Gladiator (Tom Langley); Turkish Provezza (Ergin Imre); the South African Phoenix 11 (Hasso Platner); and the Thai Team Vayu (Tom and Kevin Whitcraft).

It will be the first regatta in which they will face each other since the Rolex TP52 World Championship, with which the 2021 season closed last November with the Sled as TP52 world champion, champion of the 52 SUPER SERIES and team to beat in 2022.

The Sled will defend both crowns this year against the likes of Quantum Racing (four-time circuit champion and three-time world champion, who finished just one point behind Sled in 2021) or Platoon (two-time world champion and third in 2021, two points behind the winner), although given the quality of the crews on board each of the TP52s and the fine-tuning of the boats during the winter, it is early to speak of clear favorites.

For the Baiona event, the TP52s arrived at the port of Vigo aboard a Peters & May freighter and are now resting on the pontoons of the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona (MRCYB) finalizing preparations to start training next weekend (Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 have free training).

The competition program will begin with the traditional official training regatta on Monday, May 23. This non-scoring test will act as a dress rehearsal for the organization and participants for the five days of competition that will complete the sports program of the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES – Baiona Sailing Week between Tuesday 24 and Saturday 28 May.

An impressive regatta field and an excited Galician

The Regatta Committee led by the Spanish María Torrijo will establish the battlefield in front of the majestic archipelago of the Cíes Islands, turning the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia into a spectacular backdrop for the action of the TP52.

Víctor Mariño, from Vigo, a crew member aboard the double world champion Platoon, is excited to compete in the waters in which he learned to navigate: “I’m looking forward to the 52 SUPER SERIES being held in my home waters, it’s kind of a dream come true. The weather is quite unstable at this time of year depending on the systems, one week can be bad and another good. At the end of May, the usual wind is from the northwest with an average of around 15-16 knots. It’s a very even race course, so there’s no real advantage I can give from my local knowledge. I don’t feel the pressure of having to perform well in my waters with the Platoon, but we are aware that if we sail at our best we can achieve a good result. What I feel is pressure for us to have good weather.”.

Baiona, looking forward to 52 SUPER SERIES and for everything to be perfect

Among the actions devised by the organizers of the event, the initiative to take the business out into the street and summon its people to a village installed in the park of La Palma, a few meters from the MRCYB, the operations center of the 52 SUPER SERIES, stands out. The village will be open to the public the weekend of May 26 to 28, and will have a giant screen where you can enjoy the best images of the competition and a wide range of entertainment and gastronomy.
