The Galician J80 fleet that is taking part in the Baitra Winter League returns to the water this Saturday for the second round of a competition in which 26 sailboats from different parts of the community and also from the north of Portugal participate.
After a first day tarnished by the wind, in which only one test could be held, the crews aspire to be able to complete several more tasks and begin to move a classification led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, which this Friday will receive at the Gala de la Vela Gallega the award for Best J80 of the year after his victory in the 2022 Spanish Championship.
They are followed in the ranking by Maija de Castor Alonso, a regular in this type of league organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, and Miudo headed by the board of directors of the Baionese club Marga Cameselle, which made its debut in the competition a fortnight ago with a very good performance.
The Portuguese Marías, led by Manel Cunha, will try to get back on the provisional podium after having fallen from third to fifth position due to a penalty, for not showing up for the weigh-in control that the committee carried out once the first test was over.

El Alboroto was the leader this Saturday of the Baitra J80 Winter League, which premiered in the Vigo estuary with the participation of 26 armed sailboats manned by sailors from numerous points in Galicia, Asturias, Madrid and Portugal.
The team, led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro and current champion of Spain in the class, was victorious in the only test that could be held on a day of regattas marred by the wind, which was very shifty and the few times it started, it blew with little intensity.
It did not allow the regatta committee to put into play the three tests it had planned, nor did it set up a trapezoid-shaped field, which was one of the objectives of the day to offer the fleet the possibility of training the type of route to which, Predictably, they will face each other in the World Cup in September.
The sports director of the Monte Real Club de Yates, Roy Alonso, explained at the end of the regatta day that “To ride this type of layout, the wind needs to be level and this day it was not achieved. El Maija, with Castor Alonso at the controls, made a very good start and kept up the fight until the end, although first place escaped him at the hands of Alboroto.
Those of Ameneiro, despite not starting in such a good position, were able to come back along the route and cross the finish line, leaving the rest of the fleet behind them, with which they will arrive at the head of the classification to the next day, scheduled for the 25th.
Another of the teams that staged a great comeback was the Portuguese Marías, led by Manel Cunha. The Portuguese crew saw almost a third of the fleet pass ahead during the first part of the tour, but in the second part they reminded the rest why they are one of the contenders for the title, passing almost all of them and finishing the test in third position.
The problem came to Marías when, once on land, the committee proceeded to weigh-in the crews and the team did not show up, with which the boat was penalized with two points, falling from third to fifth position.
And the Miudo rose from fourth to third place, in which two great sailors in Galicia made their debut in the league, Marga Cameselle and Víctor Mariño. Despite not being regulars in J80 competitions, both proved their worth and warned that they will fight in the coming days.
Before sending the fleet back to land and putting an end to the day, the race committee tried to start a second test but the wind did its thing again, with which the classification of the opening day was closed with a single score.

The Monte Real Club de Yates opens its 2023 sports calendar this Saturday in Baiona with the celebration of the first day of the Baitra J80 Winter League, which will be played in 6 stages until next May thanks to the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales .
In addition to this Saturday, there will be tests on February 25, March 11, 25 and 26 and May 27. Three regattas per day are scheduled, so that, if conditions permit and everything goes according to plan, the one-design fleet will compete in a total of 18 sleeves.
This year, the competition, which includes prominent sailors such as Víctor Mariño, Alberto Viejo or Marga Cameselle, among others; includes a couple of new features. The first is that the start time of the different phases is brought forward, which goes from three in the afternoon to two, with the aim of being able to take more advantage of the daylight time and not have the deadline time for the end of the tests, set to one hour before sunset.
The second novelty is that the usual double routes between buoys of the windward-leeward type are changed to layouts in the shape of an Olympic trapeze, a layout that will possibly be chosen for the world championships in September. What is sought with this change is that the fleet, which already knows the regatta field and the conditions of the Galician estuaries well, can now also get used to the type of World Cup route.
And it is that one of the aspirations of Monte Real as the organizing club of the world championship is that one of the more than 25 sailboats that will participate in the J80 winter league manages to sneak into the podium of the World Cup event, scheduled between the 18th and 24th of September.
Until then, many months ahead in which to train, not only in this competition but also in the rest of the trophies scheduled by the Bayonés club for this 2023, among which are its two great classics, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy (from July 22 to 25) and the Prince of Asturias Trophy (September 1 to 3), in which the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards will be presented again (September 2).
Before them will come the CdeC Trophy (April 22), the Repsol Trophy (April 29 – May 1), the Galician A Dos Championship – MRW Trophy (June 10) and then the J80 Autumn League (October 14 – December 16). There will also be room for non-competitive regattas, such as the III Ruta Rías Baixas (July 3-8), which was so well received in its first two calls.

Under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Galician Rías Baixas will bring together, from September 18 to 24, the best J80 sailors in the world, who will compete in this great international event in 80 sailboats from different countries of the 5 continents .
After passing through Denmark (2021) and the United States (2022), this will be the first time that the world championship of the class will come to Galicia, a community that has been betting on these one-designs for years, with one of the most important fleets of Spain.
In the presentation of the event, the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, said he felt a mixture of pride and responsibility after having been chosen to organize “such a prestigious event, which will put the focus of the sailing world in Galicia he said . “We will once again demonstrate our club’s ability to organize major events and Galicia’s potential to host top-level sports competitions, offering visitors a unique environment,” he assured.

It has been a year with an extraordinary sporting activity that those of us who practice the sport of sailing have enjoyed. In addition to our complete regatta calendar, we managed to bring the third most important competition in the world to Galicia for the first time, the SUPER SERIES, an event that once again positioned MRCYB on international circuits. We also organize, at the proposal of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, three Spanish championships: one complete and two finals.
The good work and professionalism of the entire MRCYB team also made it possible for us to organize the J80 class World Championship in 2023, one more reason to feel proud and grateful to those who have worked hard to achieve it.

Baiona will crown this weekend the best J80 of autumn in Galicia

A great day of regattas in the waters of Baiona for the J80 fleet that is taking part in the Gestilar Autumn League. The penultimate stage of the circuit organized by Monte Real caused new changes this Saturday in the general classification, which is once again led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto.
As the reports pointed out, the wind was soft but strong enough for the regatta committee to complete two tests in the bay of Baiona, now adding a total of eight sleeves in the league overall.
The first of the day, which started at around 3:15 in the afternoon, began with the dominance of Alboroto, which reached the first mark of the route with a notable advantage over the rest of the fleet. In the second half of the tour, however, Manuel María Cunha’s Marías squeezed and managed to win ahead of Ameneiro’s men after a tough one-on-one between the two teams. Third place, for its part, went to Joaquim Moreira’s Portuguese 4J’S, which debuted this Saturday in the Autumn League.
Little changed at the head of the fleet during the second test of the day. Marías once again demonstrated his potential and did so by adding a new victory to his locker. With this, the team has accumulated four consecutive victories, although not having competed in the first matches places it in the middle of the table.
Behind, the second position of the round was once again occupied by Alboroto while third place went to Solventis Ribadeo, which on this occasion had Bruno Gago at the controls.

High tension in the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, with a very close table of results after the celebration, this Saturday in the Rías Baixas, of the penultimate round. Several unexpected conditions made the third of the five stages of the one-design championship organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates one of the most exciting to date.
One of the surprises of the day was given by the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Cunha, who after not having participated in the first two days, made a stellar entry into the competition, winning the two tests held this Saturday. The Portuguese crew was full of victories, but with its scarcity of races disputed it will be difficult to access the podium positions from the 18th position it currently occupies.
Less surprising was the climb to the top of the standings for Solventis Ribadeo, who after his great performance on the previous day with Malalo Bermúdez at the helm, this Saturday, with Alberto García leading the team, managed to maintain his good work and his streak in the results. He signed two second places that allow him to hang, temporarily, the gold of the competition.
Worse luck was experienced by one of the favorites to win the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto. The current champion of Spain in the class made an out of line and lost the lead he had had since the first day, being relegated to second position behind Solventis.
After first place for Solventis with 13 points and second for Alboroto with 15 points, Bica de Chisco Catalán appears in third position with 17 points, which once again changed its crew, this time with Laureano. and Jaime Wizner on board, who were also joined by Jesús González-Llanos.
Fernando Yáñez’s El Cansino, in fourth position, is the boat that has the best chance of fighting for one of the honorary positions in the two days remaining before the end of the league. With two third places in the tests held this Saturday and after eliminating his worst result thanks to discarding, he is left with 22 points, quite close to the first three classified and far from the rest.

The J80 face a decisive day in the Gestilar Autumn League this Saturday

The J80 that this autumn will be played in the Rías Baixas in the Gestilar League of the Monte Real Club de Yates will live this Saturday a decisive day at the equator crossing of the competition, which will put into play, starting at three in the afternoon, the third of the five stages that make up the one-design championship.
Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto and Francisco “Chisco” Catalán’s Bica lead the standings separated by just two points (they have 11 and 13 respectively). A little further down, in a range of seven points, are grouped together by Malalo Bermúdez’s Solventis Ribadeo (19 points), Real Club Náutico de A Coruña’s I3D Atlántico, led by Guillermo Blanco (24 points) and Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino ( 26 points).
Four crews from Baiona and one from A Coruña make up the Top 5 of a league in which 23 boats are playing for the title, most of them belonging to the J80 fleet of the Monte Real Club de Yates, and others from such diverse origins such as the Grupo Bazán Club (Ferrol), the We Do Sailing Club (Porto), the RCN A Coruña, the CN Portonovo or the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas.
After holding three races on the first day and one on the second, the race committee, headed by Carlos Villar, is confident that they will be able to start three new rounds this Saturday, which would be the fifth, sixth and seventh of the competition. From the sixth, the long-awaited discard will come into play, which allows the crews to eliminate their worst result from the table.
If this happens, the teams that will benefit the most from the discard will be those that remained more or less constant in their positions, making very few mistakes. The clearest case is that of the first two classified: Alboroto and Bica, who finished all the previous tests in first and second position except on one occasion.
Those of Ameneiro arrive at this third stage with almost perfect partials of 1-1-1-8; and the Chisco Catalán crew has 2-2-7-2 on their markers. Both share a very weak result from which they will be able to get rid of in the discard and thus separate themselves from their most direct rivals, who did not manage to be so constant in their positions.
Another of the movements that usually occurs when a discard comes into play is the grouping, in the center of the table, of a good number of boats that are close in scores, offering greater excitement to the competition.
In principle, the weather forecasts for this Saturday are quite propitious, with a southerly component wind that will blow with sufficient intensity to allow the planned events to be held.

The Monte Real Club de Yates has just been distinguished with the cross of sports nautical merit awarded annually by the Spanish Maritime Sports League (Spanish Federation of Naval Leagues). “Commitment, tenacity, leadership and exemplary work for society” were some of the aspects valued when granting the Baionese club this distinction, which rewards, according to the opinion, a “exemplary career path”.
This new recognition comes to Monte Real Club de Yates in one of the most prolific years of recent decades, in which it not only hosted the prestigious TP52 SUPER SERIES, but was also responsible for organizing the J80 Spanish Championship, the Spanish Cruise Championship and the Final of the Women’s National Sailing League, in addition to all the regattas included in its usual sports calendar, among which the Prince of Asturias Trophy stands out, with the National Sailing Awards; and the Count of Gondomar Trophy.
Its inclusive and adapted sailing activities (for women victims of sexist violence, people with functional diversity, children in care and children with behavioral problems) and its “Vela en feminine” project that has been seeking to promote women in the world for years of sailing, were other aspects valued when granting the club this recognition.
The president of the MRCYB, José Luis Álvarez, was in charge of collecting the distinction, this weekend, at a seafaring fellowship meal held at the Principal Casino in Guadalajara. The act, led by the President of the FELAN (Spanish Federation of Naval Leagues), José Carlos Tamayo, included the singing of Salve Marinera and a toast to His Majesty King Felipe VI, honorary president of Monte Real.
In addition to the nautical merit cross, José Luis Álvarez also collected diplomas and recognition pins for the rest of the Board of Directors of Monte Real, which includes Alejandro Retolaza (vice president), Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui (commodore), Francisco Pino (vice commodore), César Fernández-Casqueiro (secretary), Fernando Yáñez (treasurer), Miguel Font (member of facilities and projects), Margarita Cameselle (member of sporting events) and Genoveva Pereiro (member of foreign relations).

The current Spanish champion of the class is leading the competition with perfect partials of 1-1-1, after having won with a full victories in the three races held on the opening day.
For this second stage, the program has scheduled the dispute of another three regattas, and if the conditions allow its celebration, the more than twenty crews of the J80 group will have the opportunity to make their first discard.
This possibility of eliminating the worst result of the table will surely adjust the classification even more, and will force the fleet to try to avoid any error, no matter how small, in the following days. In a 5-stage circuit, with 15 tasks and only 2 discards, any failure can be very expensive for the teams.

The sailboat, current champion of Spain in the class, won the three tests held on the first day of competition, making its objectives very clear in this autumn league, which are none other than to win the final victory and thus continue directing the preparation for the 2023 world cup.
The boat manned by Javier Aguado, Javier Lago and Antoni Xabier del Río, who replaced the usual team member Juan Lago in this inaugural stage, completed three very good races, succeeding in tactics, securing the edges, the first passing through the buoy with maneuvers clean and widening the distance with their rivals as soon as they found an opportunity.

The Galician J80 fleet returns to Baiona this weekend to inaugurate the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, the competition with which the Monte Real Club de Yates closes its 2022 regatta season.
More than 20 one-design sailboats will be measured between the months of October and December in five days in which there are programs for a total of 15 tests, with a maximum of three per stage, on October 29, November 12 and 26, and 3 and December 17.
They may be, depending on the weather conditions and the decisions of the regatta committee, or windward-leeward races between buoys, or coastal courses. Regardless of the competition design chosen for each day, the tests will always start at three in the afternoon and the last start of each day must be given one hour before sunset.
Among the participants we will see the current J80 Spanish champions in the general and mixed categories, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto and Luis de Mira’s Namasté. They will also enter the fray, among others, Cansino de Nano Yáñez, who in the previous edition of the league won the bronze medal; and the 2021 winner, the Marías from the Portuguese Cunha family, who will join the competition from December.
In addition to winning the Monte Real and Gestilar autumn championship, the crews attend the event with the aim of starting to define their teams and carry out the first joint training sessions ahead of the J80 World Championship to be held in Baiona in September. of 2023.

A victory achieved with a very comfortable margin of points with respect to its most direct rivals and the result of a very good racing season.
After being victorious, the owner of the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team, Nuria Sánchez, was very satisfied to have been able to revalidate the title of the previous edition. “The effort we have made throughout all this time with the “We want to make history” project has been rewarded with many successes like this one, victories that encourage us to continue working. The evolution and commitment of the girls has been very good and we have already set ourselves new goals for 2023”.
The team’s crew, in addition to the owner herself, includes the Olympian Natalia Via-Dufresne, María Torcida, Mar Gil, Carlota Hernández and Martina Ruigómez. Barely 11 years old, the latter, daughter of the outstanding sailor Carlos ‘Puro’ Ruigómez, is the clearest example of the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team’s commitment to promising young sailors in Spain.
“In the team we have always sought to include new crew members, of all ages. It is currently made up of half juniors and half seniors, and this mix of ages and experiences does nothing but enrich and strengthen it.”, says Nuria Sánchez, who not only defends exclusively female sailing, but also mixed teams, which she considers a very good opportunity to give women the boost they need in Spanish sailing.
“Despite all the advances that have been made from different areas, there is still a lot of work to be done so that the number of federative licenses for women continues to grow. And this is something we cannot do alone. We need help from men, we need them to support us and, above all, trust us”, assures the owner of the Dorsia Covirán, who is clear that “sailing in mixed teams in one-design competitions such as the J80, in which strength is not so important, will allow us women to continue growing hand in hand with men, and finally develop more all-female teams .”
The Final of the Women’s Sailing League that took place these days in Baiona was organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation. The tests, which were part of the Iberdrola Women’s Sailing Circuit, were held thanks to the sponsorship of the Isonor Group and with the collaboration of the Xunta de Galicia, the Pontevedra Provincial Council, the Baiona City Council and the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.
Despite the fact that a total of six tests were planned in the program, three per day, the adverse weather conditions left in the Rías Baixas by the Beatrice storm, with a lot of rain and a very intense wind, only allowed the dispute of two sleeves on Saturday.
Both were won by Dorsia Covirán, who won the Isonor Trophy gold. The silver and bronze of this last phase went to the team from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, led by Berta Campos; and the Galician Pazo de Cea, by Rosario García, with a pendant from the Monte Real Yacht Club.
At the awards ceremony, which put an end to the competition, the participants, among other authorities, were the Minister of Equality of the Xunta de Galicia, María Jesús Lorenzana; the commercial director of Grupo Isonor, María Fraguas; and the head of sporting events at the Monte Real Club de Yates, Marga Cameselle.
Cameselle thanked the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation for having chosen Monte Real for the celebration of the last phase of the women’s circuit and highlighted the alignment of this initiative with the club’s “Sailing for Women” program.
“More than a quarter of a century ago ,” he said, we launched the Ladies Cup, a 100 percent female competition, and since then we have not stopped betting on women. We promote exclusively female teams and help them so that they can participate in state competitions; we created specific awards for women in our trophies; we take women victims of sexist violence out on the water… these are some of the things we have done and continue to do, and we still have many more to start”.
