The 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy , disputed over the last four days in Galicia, came down this Sunday with the celebration of a test that turned out to be decisive and the awarding of prizes to the winners of the competition.

The regatta committee had scheduled two windward-leeward sleeves to close the trophy but the weather, which was the protagonist during the first two days, once again made itself felt. The wind was slow to appear at the Cíes anchorage, the scene of the competition, and the sailboats had to keep floating for two hours before being able to launch themselves again for the championship.

In dispute, a route between buoys of just over four miles for the big boats and a little less for the smaller ones and one designs, which the crews had to face with a west wind of about 6 knots on average, which never passed of the 8 It was a complicated test, very technical, with difficulties to find the best tacks and even to advance astern with the tide going out.

With very different characteristics from the two coastal races that opened this edition of the Conde de Gondomar, the skippers’ skill in advancing as quickly as possible in the barlosotas was decisive when it came to defining the final podiums, which reaffirmed the bets of many but which also left some last minute surprises.

STORAX ORC 1-2-3

In the Storax ORC 1-2-3 class, the Yess Too of the Monte Real Club de Yates, armed and skippered by the Portuguese Rui Ramada, achieved a triple victory in the competition, taking the award to the winner of the Carrumeiro in real time, the first prize of his class and the overall winner, which he received from the general manager of SabadellGallego, Pablo Junceda.

This is the second victory at the Conde de Gondomar that the Portuguese owner has achieved since he began to participate in the competition ten years ago. In 2014 he achieved victory with the Fifty, one of the boats that gave Ramada the most satisfaction, with which, among other trophies, he won the Prince of Asturias on several occasions.

The second and third place of the Conde 2019 went to two of the most successful boats in the history of the competition, both from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo: the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers, who finally could not sign their fourth consecutive victory; and José Luis Freire’s Pairo 8, the best in this Sunday’s test.

RÍAS BAIXAS J80

The Spaniard, who had been the leader since the beginning of the forty-fourth edition of the Conde de Gondomar, fell to second place and the Maija of José Luis Pérez, also from Monte Real Club de Yates, was in third place.

MARTIN MILLER FIGARO

In the Martin Miller Figaro class, Bouvento and Ladeira were the two boats that maintained the strongest bets throughout the competition in the game for the final victory, which ended up being won by Ladeira, skippered by Vice-Commodore of Monte Real, Genoveva Pereiro. .

Fernando Rey’s Bouvento came second and Víctor Fernández’s Tutatis, the third boat in discord since Thursday, failed to rise from the third position that it held during the first two days and in which it reaffirmed itself in the final stage.

The second day of the 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, held this Saturday in the Rías Baixas, increased the excitement towards the end of the competition with dance numbers in the rankings that distance some leaders from their most direct rivals and bring them closer the intermediate positions of the fleet.

The Aceites Abril of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo was the winner of the day in the STORAX ORC 1-2-3 class but they did not manage to unseat the Yess Too of Rui Ramada from the top of the provisional podium, so they will still have to fight tomorrow Sunday if he wants to achieve his fifth title -the fourth consecutive- of the competition.

In a 25-mile journey through the interior of the Vigo estuary, the crew led by Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal managed to shorten the time needed to defeat the Portuguese with tactical success, by choosing a course closer to Bouzas and not getting involved towards Moaña like the Portuguese team, which won in real time and still has gold in its pocket.

José Luis Freire’s Pairo 8, who replaced Luis Bugallo with Manuel María Cunha at the tiller, was the most affected in the fight between this triad of titans of the STORAX ORC 1-2-3 class. He went out with enthusiasm from Baiona to the unmarking, Carallones and La Negra, always following in the wake of Aceites Abril, which he only managed to overcome in Lousal. But on the beat back to the Tofiño mark, he fell back to third position, where he will reach the final tests tomorrow, Sunday.

Despite the fact that the classic route back to Ons was planned in the regatta program, after reviewing the weather conditions the regatta committee, with Fernando Giraldo at the helm, decided to propose an alternative route through the interior of the Vigo estuary. A success that allowed the crews to avoid the scarce wind from outside and navigate inside the archipelagos with a wind of about 12 knots on average.

Where there were changes was in the classification of the PSA RETAIL ORC 4-5 class, in which Luis García Trigo’s Unus, who had been leading, fell to third position after finishing sixth in today’s test. The winner of the day was the Balea Dous of Luis Pérez, of the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira, who after winning the regatta took the lead followed by La Burla Negra, of Juan José Martínez Silva. Victor Álvarez’s Nahela was another of the outstanding boats of the day, but failed to make it onto the provisional podium.

In the RIAS BAIXAS J80 class, the Luna Nueva of the Asturian Juan Luis Tuero remains the leader, who today did not do very well in the test, in which he came in fifth, but whose victory on the first day allows him to stay in top of the ranking. They are followed in the general by Santiago Estévez’s Cunichán, who slips into the top three, and José Luis Pérez’s Maija, who fell from second to third place.

Tomorrow is the decisive day

The Portuguese Rui Ramada prevails in the challenge of the Carrumeiro Chico del Conde de Gondomar

· The crew of the Yess Too was the fastest to finish the star test of the 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy

·The Monte Real Club de Yates boat completed the almost 96-mile round trip between Baiona and Carrumeiro Chico in 17 hours

· José Luis Freire’s Pairo 8 skippered by the young Luis Bugallo qualified for Galicia for the Spanish Height Championship

· The harshness of the test and the inclement weather forced a large part of the fleet to withdraw, leaving only 3 boats in dispute

The Swan 45 Yess Too, owned by the Portuguese owner and skipper Rui Ramada, was the winner of the Carrumeiro Chico climb, the star stage of the 44th Conde de Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, which after more than 24 hours of testing, ended this morning in the Rias Baixas. The Portuguese sailboat, which sails through the Monte Real Club de Yates, won the challenge after completing the 95.43-mile round trip between Baiona and Carrumeiro Chico in 17 hours and 36 minutes.

Pursued at all times by Aceites Abril and Pairo 8, who did not want to give up, Yess Too had to make every effort to widen the gap with their two great rivals, who would benefit from the time compensation in the classification final. He came out in the lead, first took the Carallones mark and from there he continued with a constant course, setting the pace to Carrumeiro, which rounded the first one at 7 in the afternoon. It would take another 9 hours to cross the finish line located on the southern island of Cíes, which he did not reach until 4:30 in the morning.

Meanwhile, Aceites Abril de Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal; and José Luis Freire’s Pairo 8, skippered by Luis Bugallo; They continued with their particular fight for victory. Aware that the Yess Too would overtake them in real time but with the possibility of taking the victory in compensated time, the two crews of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo gave everything to win.

In its fight of titans, the Aceites Abril was ahead during much of the regatta and when it seemed that it was going to be the winner, the Pairo gave the surprise and at the height of the Corrubedo lighthouse it decided to go further towards the coast, managing to get ahead , a position he would hold until the end of the test.

A finish that showed why the climb to the Carrumeiro Chico del Conde de Gondomar is one of the toughest regattas on the Spanish nautical scene since, after more than 20 hours of sailing, the sailboats had to deal with the wind again, which returned to fall and stalled the crews when they could almost see the finish line. It took them more than 4 hours to cover just 3 miles.

The Pairo 8 crossed the finish line at 10:15 in the morning, after 23 hours of navigation, and qualified through Galicia for the Spanish Championship of Height. The April Oils did it at 11:08, when a day had already passed since the starting horn was heard at Baiona at 11 am on Thursday.

The rest of the boats, among which the performance of Victor Carrión’s Bon III stood out, which was able to keep the pulse of the three favorites for much of the route; and the Lagos Alcaraván III shipyard classic; They decided to withdraw before the end of the test.

Thus, the record of the Carrumeiro Chico test remains intact for another year, which has been held since 2011 by Cenor & De Dietrich, a Farr 50 of the Real Club de Regatas de Galicia that managed to place its name in the history of the Count of Gondomar completing the regatta in 11 hours 56 minutes and 57 seconds. The crew from Arousa, led by Martín Bermúdez de la Puente, lowered that year by more than 30 minutes the record that the Basque sailboat Zorongo had held since 1992.

The 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy continues on Saturday with a new coastal regatta on the second day of tests

The PSA RETAIL ORC 4-5, RÍAS BAIXAS J80 and MARTIN MILLER FÍGARO classes were in charge of inaugurating this Thursday, the great day of the Apostle, the classification of the 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, which is being held these days in Galicia under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club of Baiona.

With the big boats disputing the stage – still to be finished – of almost 100 miles to the Carrumeiro Chico, in Corcubión, the trophy markers opened with the scores of the ORC 4-5 and one-designs, which completed a coastal crossing of almost 30 miles from Baiona to the Camouco lighthouse, near Ons, and return to the end of the test located on the southern island of Cíes.

Wearing a pendant from the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Unus of the Luis García Trigo, was the winner of the day in the PSA RETAIL ORC 4-5 class, after signing a time of 5 hours and 19 minutes in the 29.6 miles in dispute . The boat of the organizing club surpassed La Burla Negra of Juan José Martínez Silva, of the Club Náutico Castrelo do Miño; and the Balea Dous of Luis Pérez, of the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira; two great crews, also aspiring to the final victory of the class, who had to settle for second and third position in the stage.

A stage that was somewhat complicated by the weather, which marked the crossing of the sailboats making the departure difficult with showers and fog, complicating the passage through Carallones with some waves and slowing them down with some calm in the vicinity of the Cíes Islands. In spite of everything, the wind from the south, with an average speed of 12 knots, propelled the sailboats as far as Camouco, allowing them to reach it in less than three hours.

The first boat to double it was Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva, undoubtedly the best of the entire 8 meter fleet in the RÍAS BAIXAS J80 class. With his usual crew, the Spaniard completed a very good regatta, staying in the lead throughout the course and taking the first ballots for the grand final prize. He prevailed over José Luis Pérez’s Maija, also from Monte Real, who took six minutes; and Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo, who occupies third place on the provisional podium.

In the MARTIN MILLER FÍGARO class, also scored in real time, the Bouvento, skippered by Fernando Rey, won the regatta of the day, a race that finished under six hours. They lead the provisional classification followed by Genoveva Pereiro’s Ladeira, who crossed the finish line a quarter of an hour after the first; and Víctor Fernández’s Tutatis, which took 6 hours and 25 minutes to complete.

After the first test concluded in the water, a seafood dinner courtesy of the Monte Real Yacht Club and a tasting of Martin Miller’s Gin and Royal Bliss gin and tonics put an end to the opening day of the Count of Gondomar for the Rías Baixas classes J80 and Martin Miller Figaro.

The Carrumeiro Chico dispute continues

In the STORAX ORC 1-2-3 competition, which brings together the big boats, the crews continue at this time their particular battle for the feat of the Carrumeiro Chico, the great test of the Count of Gondomar, with almost 100 miles of course.

The Yess Too, owned by the Portuguese Rui Ramada, was the first ship to reach the area known as the Greek Cemetery and turn around the mythical lighthouse at 18:59, after 8 hours of sailing. He still has several more hours ahead of him until he crosses the finish line.

The Aceites Abril, owned by the Pérez Canal brothers, and the Pairo 8, skippered by Luis Bugallo, have stayed close to the Portuguese boat throughout the race and very close to each other, making it clear that they want to win the mythical race once times are compensated.

The Bon III, with Victor Carrión at the helm, is another one that is going strong in the competition, in the wake of the first three without ever distancing themselves too much.

Once the long journey is over, the Monte Real Yacht Club will offer the crews the now traditional eggs with chorizo and broth, so that the sailors can regain strength after the arduous effort of one of the toughest events on the Spanish nautical calendar.

The competition resumes on Saturday 27

After a well-deserved day of rest for the Carrumeiro sailboats, the 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy resumes on Saturday 27 with the celebration of the second day starting at noon. The test in dispute will be, on this occasion, a route of about 32 miles surrounding the island of Ons.

There will still be two more tests for the end of the competition, of the windward leeward type, scheduled for Sunday from noon at the Cíes Islands anchorage. It will be then when the trophy program is completed, revealing the configuration of the winners’ podium.

The Count of Gondomar summons the best crews in the Rías Baixas

Galicia hosts between July 25 and 28 the forty-fourth edition of one of the most historic nautical competitions in Spain

· The 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy will include coastal, windward and leeward tests and the mythical climb to Carrumeiro Chico

· The April Oils of the Pérez Canal brothers, winner of the previous edition, will seek its fifth victory in the Monte Real competition

The big day of Galicia will once again be marked, one more year, by one of the most important nautical events of the year, the Count of Gondomar del Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, which remains faithful to the celebration of one of its regattas more historical making it coincide with the Santiago holiday.

Thus, next Thursday, the 25th, the forty-fourth edition of the competition will begin in the Rías Baixas, which will once again be the Banco Sabadell Trophy thanks to the sponsorship of the bank.

For four days, the best crews on the peninsular Atlantic will meet on the Galician coast to test their strength in a test program that includes short and long coastal routes and windward-leeward tests. A mixed repertoire that seeks to give opportunities to the different styles of sailors and types of boats that participate.

The star test is, without a doubt, the mythical climb from Baiona to Carrumeiro Chico, in Corcubión, which with its almost 100 miles of route will decide the Spanish Altitude Championship of the Galicia Zone. The largest boats will compete against each other on Thursday 25th from eleven in the morning, while the smaller ones will compete in a round trip between Baiona and Camouco, in Ons.

On Saturday the 27th the entire fleet will have to complete a 32-mile route around Ons; and the more technical tests, of the windward-leeward type, are reserved for the last day, Sunday 28, at the Cíes Islands anchorage.

On all days, in addition to the water program, there will be activities on land, such as an exhibition of PSA Retail vehicles, seafood dinners, gin and tonic tastings with Martin Miller and Royal Bliss or concerts, in addition to the traditional awards ceremony for the winners , which will be held on Sunday 28 at six in the afternoon.

It will undoubtedly be a great event for sailing lovers, as pointed out in the presentation by the director of Sabadell Gallego, Pablo Junceda, who congratulated the Monte Real Club de Yates for sustaining this “great brotherly effort,” he said. “In Sabadell Gallego – continued Junceda – We have always believed in projects that provide added value to the environment in which they are developed and whose promoters set an example of perseverance, and the Count of Gondomar and the Monte Real Yacht Club are a good example of this” .

April Oils will seek its fifth victory

One of the boats that has already confirmed its participation in the 44th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy is the Aceites Abril, owned by the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, winner of the previous edition. The crew will try to enter the history of the regatta by achieving their fifth victory -the fourth in a row-, after those obtained in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

If she managed to repeat the long-awaited victory, the Aceites Abril would manage to surpass the number of victories over two historic boats in the regatta: the Ardora de Paz Andrade and the Castrosúa led by Willy Alonso, both with four laurels from the Count to their credit.

Still ahead in the history of trophy winners would be José Luis Freire’s Pairo, the boat with the most victories in the competition, with a total of 6 wins (in 1983, 1984, 1988, 2003, 2007 and 2009). In 2018, Freire’s men again missed the podium at the hands of Aceites Abril, but they managed to win the title of Spanish Height Champions of the Galicia Zone.

More than a regatta, a whole social event

The Count of Gondomar is “an event that transcends the sporting sphere, which goes much further, becoming a social event” , assured the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club at the presentation of the trophy. José Luis Álvarez thanked “the effort of all the people who have been working for months so that everything goes perfectly, and the commitment of the companies and administrations that allow Galicia to continue to have a name of its own in the world of sailing” .

The Fleur de Passion moored at Monte Real

· The 33-meter-long sailboat arrives in Baiona thanks to the Foundation Pacifique and the Ocean Mapping Expedition that commemorated the fifth centenary of Magellan and Elcano’s first circumnavigation of the world, replicating their journey

· For four and a half years, the ship followed in the footsteps of sailors carrying out science, education and culture activities in its wake with the aim of explaining the human impact on the ocean

· The ship, moored this Monday at the Monte Real Club de Yates, will continue its journey as of tomorrow, Tuesday, towards Lisbon, Faro and Cádiz, the last stages planned on its navigation route.

The Monte Real Club de Yates hosts these days on its pontoons the Fleur de Passion, the 33-meter-long Swiss sailboat that for the last four and a half years has sailed around the planet replicating the first circumnavigation of the world by Magellan and Elcano.

The Baionese club has been chosen by the Fondation Pacifique (the non-profit organization based in Geneva that leads the Ocean Mapping Expedition ), as a stopover in the last stages of the sailboat’s navigation, which will continue tomorrow, Tuesday, towards Lisbon, Faro and Cadiz.

During its stay at Monte Real, the boat has remained open to the public who wished to visit it and the students of the club’s Sailing School have been able to learn more about its characteristics, getting on board and listening to the crew’s explanations.

The main objective of the Fleur de Passion in its journey around the world is to offer data on the impact of man on the oceans, while trying to raise awareness of the need to implement actions to prevent their deterioration.

Microplastics, noise pollution, greenhouse gases or the state of health of coral reefs are some of the problems that were addressed in the different scales of the sailboat.

The Fleur de Passion is the largest Swiss sailing ship, a former minesweeper of the German Navy, built in 1941 and converted into a sailing ship in the 1970s.

The activity organized by TPC Events at Monte Real included activities from the Team Sailing project of the Monte Real Yacht Club, launched in 2017. It is a program with which the club expanded the activities offered to the general public beyond training at its Sailing School or participation in regattas.

Through 6 different proposals, Monte Real offers sectors not directly related to nautical the possibility of approaching the world of sailing with the aim of extracting personal and professional benefits from it.

Of the 6 activities proposed, 3 have a more playful nature, which includes living the experience of a regatta, participating in a competition to get to know the Cíes Islands or discovering Baiona by sailboat. The other half of the offer is based on training elements closely related to coaching , including workshops for companies, team building sessions to improve performance or workshops to optimize teamwork.

Compete in a regatta with coworkers in one of the most beautiful spots on the Atlantic coast, visit the only marine national park in Spain, train leadership skills to improve team performance and the work environment within a company, redefine the course personal and work of workers or improve the use of time are some of the possibilities offered by the program Team Sailing of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

The lack of wind forces to suspend the first stage of the Pornic-Baiona-La Rochelle

· The low intensity of the wind in the last days of the competition forced the regatta committee to suspend the first stage between Pornic and Baiona

· The sailboats arrived by motor at the Monte Real Club de Yates from where they will try to resume the test tomorrow, Tuesday, heading to La Rochelle

· Some thirty boats participate in the first edition of a test that was born from a change of course from the previous Pornic – Baiona – Pornic

The wind played a trick on the thirty sailboats participating in the Pornic-Baiona-La Rochelle Atlantic regatta and forced the suspension of the first stage, which was scheduled to end this Monday in Baiona with the award ceremony for the winners.

The barely 3-4 knots that were registered during the last day prevented the fleet from sailing and the crews had to turn on the engine to reach the Monte Real Club de Yates, co-organizer of the race and end point of the first stage of 455 miles nautical between Pornic and Baiona.

At the facilities of the Baiona club, the more than 30 participating crews take advantage of this Monday to rest and regain strength before trying to start, tomorrow, Tuesday, the second stage of the competition, which will take them, if the wind allows it, to the French town La Rochelle, where the end of the regatta will be held on the 13th.

La Pornic – Baiona – La Rochelle was born from the previous Pornic-Baiona-Pornic, launched three years ago in 1997 after the twinning of both towns, which share numerous similarities in terms of their fishing, tourist and nautical sports activities. After turning 11 years old in 2016, the regatta changed its format and in 2019 it became the Pornic – Baiona – La Rochelle.

The test is organized by the municipality of Pornic with the collaboration of the municipalities of Baiona and La Rochelle, and the participation of the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Club Náutico do Pornic and the La Rochelle Yachtsmen’s Association. The marinas of Pornic and La Rochelle also collaborate.
