Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen wins its fifth J80 Winter League

· El Alboroto by Juan Carlos Ameneiro and El Cansino by Alejandra Suárez won silver and bronze in a competition in which Spaco by Santiago Estévez and Marías by Manel Cunha closed the group of the 5 best

· The J80 Winter League held during these first months of the year in Baiona thanks to the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales once again highlighted the good health enjoyed by the 8 meters in Galicia

· With the closing of the one-design championship at the Monte Real Yacht Club, they are now preparing to open the cruise season that will begin this April with the celebration of the Comunica Trophy and the Repsol Trophy

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen once again demonstrated this Saturday why it is one of the best J80s in Galicia after winning, once again, the Winter League that the Monte Real Club de Yates organizes for the 8-meter monotypes.

The sailboat led by the historic sailor from Vigo and with Diego Fernández and Jaime Gándara as base crew, who were joined by different sailors in the different days, added its fifth title in the competition (the fourth consecutive) after those achieved in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

He did it with a final balance of 14 points derived from almost perfect partials (1-2-1-3-1-1-1-1-1-1-1), from discarding his two worst results from the classification (a 4th place and one offline) and to beat the second and third classified by 12 and 29 points.

The general director of Baitra Accesorios Navales, Juan Carlos González, was in charge, as sponsor of the event, of delivering the trophy to a team that will surely be talked about in the remainder of the regatta season, not only in the J80 leagues but also in the other competitions in which the 8 meters participate with their own class.

After collecting his award, Javier de la Gándara was very satisfied with having achieved this fifth league victory, and if he did so, he said, “in a competition in which it is increasingly difficult to win because -as he assured- the quality of the crews has increased a lot and there are teams that sail very well” . For the sailor it was a “very complete league, with many tests and very good wind “, which allowed them to enjoy sailing.

The awards ceremony and subsequent fellowship dinner put an end to a day in which the nerves in the water were especially noticeable. Everyone wanted to adjust their positions as much as possible and improve their results for the final classification and they ended up forcing a general call in the first race and a couple of off-lines in the other two races.

With a north wind that blew with good intensity and a regatta field located between the Virgen de la Roca and las Estelas, the first two races were for Okofen and the third and last for Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, who finished second. overall and took the Winter League silver with 22 points.

Manel Cunha’s Marías, who had all the ballots to close the winners’ podium, did not go out to compete this Saturday, and that caused him to lose all his options to hang a medal. He left Alejandra Suárez’s Cansino free to climb into the third drawer and hang the bronze with 43 points.

The group of the five best in the one design league was closed by Spaco de Santiago Estévez, fourth with 59 points; and the Portuguese Marías, fifth with 69. The trophies were delivered, in addition to the CEO of Baitra, Juan Carlos González; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the deputy for Economic Promotion of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Raquel Giráldez.

The Baitra J80 Winter League held during these first four months of the year in Baiona once again revealed the good health enjoyed by the 8 meters in Galicia. A state that is not only reflected in the progressive increase in units but also in the improvement that led to the arrival of coach Carlos Llamas among the crews to prepare the teams for the Spanish Championship and the World Cup that Baiona will host this year and the next. .

With the closing of the one-design league, the Monte Real Yacht Club is now preparing to launch its cruise season, which will begin this month of April with the celebration, on the 23rd, of the Comunica Trophy; and the Repsol Trophy on April 29 and 30 and May 1. The registration period for both competitions is now open through the club’s website.

De la Gándara and his Okofen crew win the J80 Autumn League

· The sailor from Vigo, accompanied by his sons Javier and Jaime and his usual winning partner, Diego Fernández, achieved a new triumph in Baiona

· De la Gándara revalidated the success achieved at the beginning of the year in the Winter League and sentenced the autumn championship by taking 27 points from their rivals

· El Cansino by Fernando Yáñez and El Alboroto by Juan Carlos Ameneiro won silver and bronze in the Monte Real monotype league

· Next weekend the bay of Baiona will host a new edition of the Spanish Sailing League – State Lotteries and Bets Trophy

There were no surprises this Saturday in Baiona and the crew led by the sailor from Vigo Javier de la Gándara finally won the J80 class Autumn League, which this afternoon held its last tests in the Bay of Baiona.

On board the Okofen , Javier de la Gándara, his sons Jaime and Javier, and Diego Fernández, the team’s usual teammate in victories; They sentenced a new edition of the one-design championship of the Monte Real Club de Yates, and they did it again forcefully.

Of the 9 tests held in various days during the months of October and November, Okofen signed 7 first places and finished with 9 points in the final general classification. The crew only missed 2 victories in which, in any case, they did not drop from second position.

De la Gándara and his team thus revalidated the victory they had achieved at the beginning of the year in the J80 Winter League and hung their laurels by taking up to 29 points from second-placed Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino . Despite the fact that he suffered a lot in today’s quarters (with an eighth, a tenth and a sixth place), Cansino managed to finish with 36 points and took the silver in the league.

The surprise of the classification came with the bronze, which finally went to the hands of Uproar from Juan Carlos Ameneiro, who with a third, a sixth and a second on the last day, managed to jump from fifth to third place overall and close the championship podium with 40 points.

Manuel María Cunha’s Marías was once again, as it had been on the penultimate day, one of the outstanding boats of the day. He finished second in the first race, managed to beat Okofen in the second race and finished third in the last regatta of the day. Despite these good results, his absences in the first days of the league (he did not compete in the first four days) weighed too much and Marías finished the competition in ninth position.

In this last stage of the one-design league, three tests were completed with a somewhat shifty wind, which forced several route changes; and with the night throwing itself on top of the clock, which prevented the celebration of any test greater than the three initially planned.

In addition to Okofen and Marías, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto managed to get on the partial podiums this Saturday, with a third and a second; and the Namasté by Luis de Mira, who achieved third place in one of the tests; although only the Fuss managed to sneak into the final podium.

Gold, silver and bronze for the Okofen, the Tired and the Fuss; fourth and fifth position for the New Moon by Juan Luis Tuero and the Maija by José Luis Pérez; and sixth place for Spaco de Santiago Estévez, another of the outstanding boats in the autumn league, which finally could not enter the Top 5.

With the end of the J80 Autumn League, the Monte Real Club de Yates puts an end to its 2020 sports calendar although it has not yet said goodbye to the competitions, since next weekend the waters of Baiona will host a new edition of the Spanish Sailing League – State Lotteries and Bets Trophy .

Organized by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, the state league returns to the Baionese club -where it had already been in 2019- to celebrate its last tests, some regattas that will reveal the name of the team that will represent Spain in the Sailing Champions League, the league European.

Decisive day for the J80 Autumn League

· This Saturday the last three tests of the autumnal one-design championship that have been held in Baiona since last October will be held

· Located at the head of the classification, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen is the sailboat that has the most ballots to win the final victory of the league

Fernando Yáñez’s El Cansino and Santiago Estévez’s Spaco are in second and third, 10 and 19 points behind the first respectively

· After the celebration of the last regattas, the Monte Real Club de Yates will award the prizes to the winners of the competition

This Saturday will be a decisive day for the J80 Autumn League, the one-design competition that has been held in Baiona since last October under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

The bay of Baiona will host the last three regattas of the championship, which will end up defining a winners’ podium that, except for last-minute surprises, has a clear favourite, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen.

The J80, led by the skipper from Vigo, has won 5 victories in the 6 races held so far and is at the top of the standings with 5 points, with a fairly comfortable margin compared to its most direct rivals.

Those rivals, aspiring to one of the podium positions, are Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino and Santiago Estévez’s Spaco, located in second and third position with 15 and 24 points respectively. And not much farther from them, they are followed by Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva, with 25 points, and Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, with 29.

It will, therefore, be very close, that center of the list where anything can happen depending on the ability of the crews in the last rounds of the championship, which will once again be double courses between buoys of the windward-leeward type.

The forecast for this Saturday announces a fairly autumnal day, with overcast skies, some possibility of rain, and southerly winds above 7 knots, which may reach up to fourteen at the moment.

Once the last tests in the water have been completed, the Monte Real Club de Yates will award the prizes to the winners of the competition, complying with the security protocols established by COVID19.
