The Okofen, champion of J80

Led by the historic sailor from Vigo, Javier de la Gándara, the Okofen won this afternoon in Baiona of the J80 Class Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and disputed in the waters of the bay of Baiona in six days since last month from January.

With his usual crew, made up of Diego Fernández, Jaime de la Gándara and Hugo Ferreiro, joined today by Ramón Ferreiro, De la Gándara sentenced a competition in which he remained the leader from the beginning. He signed fourteen first places and two seconds in the sixteen contested races, leaving the rest of the competitors with hardly any chance.

Okofen thus adds a new victory in the one-design competitions held in Galicia, after having won, in recent months, the Prince of Asturias Trophy in the J80 category and the J80 Autumn League of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

Second place in the Winter League went to the Miudo by Storax, a Portuguese-accented boat that saw multiple crews pass through. At the cane were, in the different days, Rui Ramada, Francisca Barros, Alfonso Leite, Tiago Roquete and, in this last stage, Miguel Leite.

The Portuguese did not achieve results as clear as the Okofen, which they could only win once, but having signed a large part of the second places in the different tests allowed them to finally take silver in the competition.

The bronze went to Miguel Lago’s Virazón, another of the regulars on the J80 podiums. After handing over the command of the boat to Javier Rey for several days, Lago returned in this last stage to ensure, with his usual good work, the third position.

One step away from the podium, separated from Virazón by just three points, was Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes; and Cansino by Fernándo Yáñez, patronized today by José de la Gándara; and Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo, achieved fifth and sixth place. The final classification is closed by Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, Pazo de Cea by María Campos, Namasté by Luis de Mira, Alumisel by Willy Caamaño, Marías by Manuel María Cunha and Náutico Cormorán by Francisco Javier Martínez.

The J80 Class Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, was held over six days since last January in the waters of the bay of Baiona. The twelve participating crews completed five initial stages with windward-leeward courses and a coastal regatta in the final stage, held this afternoon.

The end of the competition was put by a fraternization dinner held at the Monte Real facilities, in which the prizes were awarded to the winners.

The J80 Class Winter League is decided this Saturday in Baiona

This Saturday the J80 Class Winter League is decided in Baiona, the one-design competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates that has been held since last January in the waters of the Bay of Baiona.

Starting at three in the afternoon, and with a good weather forecast for navigation, the twelve participating sailboats will compete in the last three regattas scheduled in the sports program.

These last three tests will be the ones that finish designing the winners’ podium, which will be climbed, in all probability, by the Okofen crews, led by Javier de la Gándara from Vigo; and the Miudo by Storax, with Rui Ramada, Francisca Barros, Alfonso Leite and Tiago Roquette alternating at the rod in the different stages.

Except for big last-minute surprises, they will take, respectively, the gold and silver of the competition; and it will be for the bronze that there is a greater dispute. Separated by just two points, Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes, skippered on the last day by Vaurien’s Spanish champion, Pablo Cabello; and Miguel Lago’s Virazón, led by Javier Rey for much of the league, will fight to climb to the bottom of the winners’ podium.

All in all, the more than probable application of a new discard, which would allow the boats to annul their worst result, could significantly modify the score and make boats such as Cansino, owned by Fernándo Yáñez, move up; or Mondo, by Bernardo Macedo, currently in the middle of the provisional classification.

A little further down the table are, in this order, the Pazo de Cea by María Campos, the Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, the Namasté by Luis de Mira, the Alumisel by Willy Caamaño, the Marías by Manuel María Cunha and the Náutico Cormorant by Francisco Javier Martínez.

The last tests of the J80 Class Winter League will be held tomorrow, Saturday, starting at three in the afternoon. The competition program provides for three regattas with a windward-leeward route lasting approximately 35 minutes each. Once finished, in the evening, the Monte Real Yacht Club will host a fellowship dinner for all the participants, in which the prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Sailors from all over Galicia are trained in safety issues at the Monte Real Yacht Club

· Repsol organizes two days of training in safety issues in marinas for workers from different Galician marinas at the Baiona yacht club

· In addition to theoretical classes, attendees participated in several practical sessions on fire fighting and fuel spill containment

· The objective of the training sessions is to provide Galician seafarers with the necessary knowledge to act correctly in the event of an accident

These days the Monte Real Yacht Club is hosting training sessions on safety in marinas organized by Repsol, in which workers from different marinas in Galicia take part.

The attendees are a group of 41 sailors from the Royal Nautical Club of Portosín, the San Vicente do Mar Marina, the Marina Punta Lagoa, the Royal Nautical Club of Vigo, the Baiona Marina and the Monte Real Yacht Club.

The objective of the sessions, given by Repsol’s technical assistance technician, Adrián Pérez, and Repsol’s SMAC (Safety, Environment and Quality) technician, Rosa Pérez, is for sailors to refresh their skills in safety and good practices, and acquire the necessary knowledge to act correctly in the event of an accident.

In addition to the theoretical classes, in which issues related to current safety regulations are addressed, the training sessions include several practical sessions with fuel spill containment and fire fighting exercises.

It was precisely this last practice, that of putting out a fire in the nautical facilities, the one that most caught the attention of the attendees today. The GES of Gondomar also participated in it, which went to Baiona to teach the sailors how to correctly use the different containment methods depending on the conditions and the place where the fire occurs.

The safety sessions organized by Repsol at the Monte Real Yacht Club began this Wednesday and will continue tomorrow, Thursday. Participating in the inauguration this morning were Repsol’s Head of Marine and Fisheries for southern Galicia, Inés González Megido; and the manager of the Monte Real Yacht Club, Óscar Calero.

Okofen touches victory in the J80 Class Winter League

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen caresses the victory of the J80 Class Winter League after adding, this Saturday in Baiona, two new triumphs in the regattas that they celebrate under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

The crew, led by the historic sailor, managed to maintain its impeccable trajectory, signing two first places and one second in the three races held in the bay of Baiona.

De la Gándara did not manage to complete this time, but remains ahead of the competition and manages to move further away from its most direct rival, the Miudo by Storax, which despite having a very good navigation, lost places with respect to the Okofen .

Waiting for what may happen on the last day, in which a new discard will almost certainly come into play, it does not seem likely that the Portuguese, with 27 points after this afternoon’s tests, will be able to overcome the team from Vigo, who they are 13.

If there are no big changes, it would be for them the second place in the J80 Class Winter League, and the one that would be the most close would be the third place. With 53 and 56 points, Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes and Miguel Lago’s Virazón are currently vying for entry on the winners’ podium.

Led by the Spanish champion of the Vaurien class, Pablo Cabello, the Ferralemes today achieved its best result so far in the competition. In the last test this Saturday, and after entering very late in the previous two, he signed a first place that allowed him to improve his position in the league.

Closing the provisional classification are Cansino by Fernándo Yáñez, Mondo by Bernardo Macedo, Pazo de Cea by María Campos, Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, Namasté by Luis de Mira, Alumisel by Willy Caamaño, Marías by Manuel María Cunha and the Nautical Cormorant by Francisco Javier Martínez.

The last stage of the competition will be played next Saturday, March 25, on a day in which the awards ceremony for the winners will also be held.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION AFTER THE FIFTH DAY

  1. Okofen – Javier de la Gandara (13 points)
  2. Miudo by Storax – Alfonso Leite (27 points)
  3. Ferralemes – Pablo Cabello (53 points)
  4. Virazón – Javier Rey (56 points)
  5. Tired – Fernándo Yáñez (67 points)
  6. Mondo – Bernardo Macedo (73 points)
  7. Pazo de Cea – Maria Campos (90 points)

Starting at three in the afternoon, the twelve participating crews will compete in three new tests in what is already the fifth and penultimate day of competition.
