The 45-year-old sailor from A Coruña, Roberto Chuny Bermúdez de Castro, will receive one of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards on September 5 in Baiona, at a gala in which he will be recognized as ocean sailor of the year.

The Monte Real Club de Yates, which has organized these prestigious awards for 23 years, wanted to highlight the great work done by Bermúdez de Castro in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015, in which he participated as co-skipper and trimmer of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, from the United Arab Emirates.

In what is considered the most extreme challenge in the sport of sailing, Chuny not only managed to lead his team to victory, but also managed to inscribe his name alongside that of the historic Joan Vila, the only Spaniard to have won the Volvo Ocean Race.

That of the VOR is one more brand in the list of winners of the coruñés, which has done nothing but grow by leaps and bounds since, at just 23 years old, he debuted in an ocean regatta aboard the Galicia 93 Pescanova. Since then, Bermúdez de Castro has participated in six editions of the Volvo, managing to get on the podium five times; He competed twice in the America’s Cup, has been IMS European champion, winner of the Copa del Rey in several editions and obtained tenth place in the Star class at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Currently, at the age of 45, this industrial engineer by training and sailor by vocation is one of the best athletes in the history of Spain and an indisputable benchmark in ocean sailing.

Next month Baiona will receive one more recognition for its impeccable sporting career, the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for Ocean Navigator 2014-2015. The gala will be held at the Monte Real Club de Yates on September 5 at eight in the afternoon.
