Baiona children discover the impact of microplastics

· The Monte Real Yacht Club organized this Saturday the “I Environmental Awareness Workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment”

· The objective of the activity was to make future generations aware of the need to reduce the use of plastics to avoid the damage they cause

· With sieves and binocular loupes, the participants discovered the reality of microplastics that most of them were not aware of

· The workshop was held thanks to the collaboration of the University of Vigo and the Baiona council and with the involvement of companies such as ABANCA and Gadis

Twenty boys and girls from different schools in Baiona participated this Saturday in the “I Environmental Awareness Workshop on the impact of plastic on the marine environment. Behind the plastic footprint”, an initiative organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club to make children aware of the repercussions that plastics generate in marine ecosystems.

The figures make it very clear. According to UN data, more than 100,000 species die each year from the plastic that pollutes the sea, and it is estimated that within 30 years there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. Some of these plastic residues are visible to the human eye (macroplastics), but to see many others (microplastics and nanoplastics) you have to use magnifying glasses and microscopes.

And that is precisely what the participants in the workshop organized by Monte Real in collaboration with the University of Vigo and the Baiona City Council, and the involvement of ABANCA and Gadis, did this Saturday. After receiving an explanation about the types of existing plastics, their production and their impact on the planet, the children went to the beaches of A Barbeira and A Ribeira to identify and collect them.

They collected more than 8 kilos of plastics and discovered microplastics (of which most of them were not aware of their existence) in the sand with laboratory materials donated by the University of Vigo such as sieves and binocular loupes.

This is the name given to plastic particles that are less than 5 millimeters in size and that are, for the most part, undetectable to the naked eye. Those that drift on the beaches are those that the sea itself expels, after having naturally crushed and degraded the plastics that end up in it. They are barely visible as they blend in with the sand, but they are there, and in recent years, researchers have begun to alert society to their terrible consequences.

One of the first measures that must be applied to reduce the presence of plastics and microplastics in the marine environment is to reduce the dependence and use that human beings have of plastics.

The “I Environmental awareness workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment. Following the footprint of plastic” Taught by the graduate in Marine Sciences and researcher on marine pollution, Noelia Estévez, it ended with an award ceremony for the participants, in which the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, participated; and ecological and sustainable food, with local products and reusable packaging.

Baiona pursues the footprint of plastic

· The Monte Real Club de Yates, in collaboration with the University of Vigo and the Baiona City Council, organizes the “I Environmental Awareness Workshop on the impact of plastic on the marine environment. Following the footprint of plastic”

· The initiative aims to raise awareness among children in the municipality of Baiona of the impact of plastic waste on the environment, paying special attention to its impact on rivers, seas and oceans

· The workshop, in which companies such as ABANCA and Gadis are also involved, will end with an ecological and sustainable meal for the participants as an example of a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle

Baiona hosts next Saturday, November 17, the “I Environmental awareness workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment. Following the footprint of plastic”, an initiative promoted by the Monte Real Club de Yates in collaboration with the University of Vigo and the Baiona city council, in which companies such as ABANCA and Gadis are also involved.

It is an educational day in which children from the municipality between 7 and 18 years old will be able to recognize the repercussions that plastics have on the environment, paying special attention to the damage they cause to marine ecosystems, and various actions to minimize its impact.

Currently only 9 percent of the plastic produced is recycled, 12 percent is incinerated and the remaining 79 percent goes to landfills or directly into the environment. There are more than 230,000 tons of plastic waste floating on the surface of the different seas of the world and, although more and more is being studied, the full impact of microplastics that are not visible to the naked eye is still unknown.

To shed light on this problem and try to raise awareness among future generations, Monte Real scheduled different activities in different locations in the municipality.

A first part, more theoretical, will include a presentation of the topic at the club’s facilities in Baiona. The types of existing plastics, their production, the routes of entry of waste into rivers, seas and oceans, and their impact on the planet will be explained to the little ones.

In the second part of the workshop, the children will go to the beaches of A Barbeira and A Ribeira, two of the most central and crowded sandbanks in the municipality of Baiona, to participate in a practical session on waste identification and collection. The goal is for them to be able to recognize and classify macroplastics, which they will later deposit in recycling containers.

The activity will also include the search for microplastics, for which laboratory materials provided by the University of Vigo will be used, such as sieves and binocular loupes, since most microplastics cannot be seen with the naked eye.

The “I Environmental awareness workshop on the impact of plastic in the marine environment. Behind the plastic footprint” will end at the Monte Real Yacht Club facilities with an ecological and sustainable meal, free of plastics, as an example of healthy lifestyles that respect the environment. It will explain the need to change plastic bags for reusable ones, avoid wrapping with transparent film and the trays in which food usually comes, not using glasses, plastic and plastic cutlery, or choose returnable bottles and containers.

With this outreach and environmental education action, which will be taught by the graduate in Marine Sciences and researcher on marine pollution, Noelia Estévez, Monte Real seeks to make the children of the municipality aware of the importance of moving towards a more sustainable consumption model. , recycling plastics and not throwing them anywhere, emphasizing the harmful effects that plastic has on the environment.

Four ships of the Rum Route take refuge in the Monte Real Club de Yates

· The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona serves as a refuge at this time for three ships on the Rum Route that encountered problems on their transoceanic crossing

· A fourth boat, the Service Civique of Frenchwoman Claire Pruvot, plans to arrive at the Baiona club in the next few hours to fix a leak

· Monte Real has made all its resources available to sailors and the company from Vigo, Velas Gándara, is dealing with the repair of its sails.

The Monte Real Club de Yates is serving as a refuge for three boats participating in the Rum Route, one of the most prestigious transoceanic regattas in the world for solo sailors, which this year celebrates its eleventh edition.

After leaving the French port of Saint Malo on the 4th, the bad weather conditions encountered by the 123 participants, with winds of up to 40 knots and waves of 6 meters, have forced various boats to make technical stops to solve the problems suffered during the journey and avoid further damage.

At this time, Emmanuel Le Roche’s Edenred , class 40, takes refuge in the historic Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona. The French sailor, who is competing for the first time on the Rum Route, suffered breakages in his sails and the Galician company Velas Gándara is fixing them so that he can return to competition as soon as possible.

The storm also baited another Class40 boat, the Carac de Louis Duc, who will remain in the fishing village of Baiona until he solves his problems and can return to Guadeloupe, something that Duc, who is competing for the second time on the Rum Route, hopes to be able to do as quickly as possible.

A fourth ship will arrive at Monte Real in the next few hours. It is the Service Civique of the French Claire Pruvot, who informed the club of the need to use its facilities to solve a leak suffered in the boat.

The refugee skippers in Monte Real have communicated to the club their intention to leave Baiona tomorrow afternoon, once the rain and wind storm that is recorded at this time in Galicia subsides, and that keeps a large part of the Galician coast on alert Orange.

Once they leave the club, they will return to Pointe-Á-Pitre, on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the final destination for these adventurers in what is known as the “Liberty Regatta”, a race where 123 professionals and amateurs compete under the same rules. along a heart-stopping journey of more than 3,500 nautical miles alone.
