Baiona, April 28, 2017.- This Saturday, starting at one in the afternoon, a new edition of the Repsol Trophy, the traditional spring regatta of the Monte Real Yacht Club, will begin in the Bay of Baiona. 2017 turns forty years old.

In the absence of the last registrations being closed, more than thirty cruising sailboats and one-designs of the J80, J70 and Fígaros classes have already confirmed their participation. Among the fleet, boats such as the Pairo VIII, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, which was the winner in the previous edition, and which this time is once again skippered by the young sailor Luis Bugallo.

Two other of the 2016 winners also repeat in 2017, the Margem do Azul III of the Monte Real Club de Yates, with the Portuguese Frederico Lopes at the controls; and in the J80 class, the Virazón, which for this occasion changes its leader, replacing Willy Caamaño with Miguel Lago at the tiller.

From Vigo, a group of J70s with such renowned names as Laureano Wizner, from Malaga and former America’s Cup sailor, will arrive in Baiona, who will sail with the Enersys 6. Ocean sailor Gonzalo Araujo will do the same aboard Bosch Service Solutions, and at Sogacsa we will see Tamara Echegoyen, who returns to Monte Real after receiving last year at the club the National Sailing Award for the best women’s team together with her Olympic partner Berta Betanzos.

Wide representation from Baiona and Vigo in a Repsol Trophy in which we will also see boats wearing pendants from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, such as the Gran Fisgón, with Manuel López at the helm; Sport Club do Porto, led by Pedro Jorge Silva’s Biao; and from different Galician clubs such as Rodeira, Sada, Beluso or Portonovo, among others.

A lot of variety in the type of boats and origin of the fleet of this new edition of the Monte Real spring regatta, which will hear the first start honks tomorrow, Saturday, starting at one in the afternoon.

For the large sailboats, the regatta committee has designed a coastal route with passages through the beacons of Carallones, La Negra, Bondaña, Torre Faro Tofiño and back again through Bondaña, La Negra and Carallones to the vicinity of Torre Tinaja, in the start of the breakwater of the Baiona wharf, where the finish line will be placed.

The J80, J70 and Fígaros one-design fleet will compete in several windward-leeward races inside the bay of Baiona, in a highly visible area for all those who want to enjoy the competition from the nearby beaches, promenades and mountains.

The weather forecast announces winds from the west-northwest of between 8 and 14 knots of intensity and little sea, so the fleet will be able to sail lightly and complete the routes in good weather.

After the opening day on Saturday morning, the Repsol Trophy will continue with new tests on Sunday and Monday, the May Day holiday, the day on which the award ceremony for the winners will also take place, scheduled for four in the afternoon at the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club.
