Javier de la Gándara wins the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy

· The sailor from Vigo sentenced the competition this Saturday in Baiona after winning the last test of a trophy in which he prevailed forcefully

Baiona, November 26, 2016.- On board the Okofen and with complicated conditions for navigation, the historic sailor from Vigo Javier de la Gándara won this Saturday in Baiona his victory in the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy, a competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of the Catalan banking entity.

With Diego Fernández, Hugo Ferreiro and Jaime de la Gándara completing the crew, Okofen sealed the one-design championship with three first places and one second in the six races held in the bay of Baiona throughout the months of October and November.

His worst result, a sixth place obtained on the fourth day, was finally annulled thanks to the application of a discard, which led De la Gándara to further widen the distance with respect to his rivals, surpassing them by 11 points.

With 17 points, Namasté led by Luis de Mira, and Susana Baena, Javier Torroja, Luis Gutiérrez and Amparo Mollá completing the team, managed to stay in second place that they had been dragging since the previous day and won the silver of the trophy.

The third position, with 19 points, went to the Portuguese Miudo, who after changing crew several times throughout the competition, achieved bronze on this last day with the very young Francisca Barros, Joao Cunha, Alfonso Leite, Rita Rocha and Matilde Pinheiro.

Fourth place went to Pazo de Cea by María Campos, fifth to Virazón by Miguel Lago and sixth to Alumisel by Willy Caamaño. Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, Ferralemes by Enrique Porto and Cansino by Fernándo Yáñez completed the classification.

This Saturday’s regatta day ended with a fraternization dinner organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club for the entire J80 fleet that participated in the trophy, and in which José Celada, representing the sponsoring entity, was also present. director of private banking Galicia Sur of Banco Sabadell.

During it, the vice-president of the club from Baiona, Alejandro Retolaza, thanked Banco Sabadell for its commitment to Monte Real, making possible – he said – one more year, the celebration of the club’s one-design league, to which each more and more boats.

With the award ceremony of the Banco Sabadell Trophy, the Monte Real Club de Yates puts an end to the 2016 regatta season, in which, in addition to holding its most traditional competitions, such as the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy or the Conde Gondomar, the club returned to international regattas with the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race.

Looking ahead to 2017, Monte Real already has a good number of regattas and activities on the agenda with which it wants to continue betting on promoting sailing in Galicia, both through nautical competitions and training from the base, through its Light Sailing and Cruising Schools, and its Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities.
