The historic sailor from Vigo Javier de la Gándara leads the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy after winning the first day of the one-design competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and held this Saturday in Baiona.

At the helm of the Okofen, De la Gándara led a crew that was very united and that demonstrated its good work in the three races held on an afternoon of clouds and showers, but with good wind for navigation.

The eleven knots that were recorded on average, with peaks of up to 14 at times, allowed the Okofen to “fly” over the waters of the bay, and achieve two first places and one second in the windward-leeward courses designed by the regatta committee .

That last first place that escaped De la Gándara’s men was snatched away by Pedro Paula Pinto’s Miudo, his most direct rival on this opening day of the trophy. The Portuguese kept a tough hand in hand with the Galician throughout the competition, but finally had to settle for provisional silver.

In third place in the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy is Javier Rey’s Pazo de Cea, closely followed by Luis de Mira’s Namasté and Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel, fourth and fifth after the first tests held this Saturday.

They are followed in the classification by two of the boats that initially started as favorites after winning in previous editions, the Luna Nueva of Juan Luis Tuero from Oviedo, and the Virazón of Miguel Lago, skippered this Saturday by Gerardo Alonso.

Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes completes the classification of a competition that, predictably, will keep the excitement going until the end, due to the quality of the participating sailors and the characteristics of the one-designs, very fast in navigation, even with little wind.

The Banco Sabadell Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club with the sponsorship of the Catalan banking entity, continues on October 29 with the second of the four days scheduled for this autumn.
