This Friday, a new edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, the quintessential sailing event in Galicia and one of the most important competitions on the Spanish nautical scene, is settling in Baiona, which in 2018 celebrates its 33rd anniversary uninterruptedly.

Pulling the strings of the organization, once again, are the historic Monte Real Yacht Club and the Escuela Naval Militar, which celebrates its 75 years of presence in Marin by participating in the trophy with several sailboats manned by aspiring midshipmen.

In the competition program, designed by a regatta committee chaired by Fernando Giraldo, the traditional scheme of three regatta days is maintained, with different tests for the participating boats, which will be divided into ORCs, Open, Classics, J80s and Fígaros.

On the opening day on Friday, the classes Martin Miller ORC 0-1, April ORC 2 Oils, Gadis ORC 3, Solventis J80 and HELLO! Ladies Cup. The first starting honk, which will start a coastal tour for the ORCs, will be heard at three in the afternoon; and half an hour later the tests for the monotypes will begin, which can be seen inside the Bay of Baiona disputing windward-leeward layouts.

On Saturday, the rest of the participants, grouped in the Storax Clásicos and Comunica Open classes, will join the competition. The organization has prepared several coastal routes for them, among which one will be chosen depending on the weather conditions. If the wind allows it, they will start at 12:30, just half an hour after the rest of the boats, which will have to face several batons to continue climbing positions in the classification.

The scheme for Sunday, the last day of competition, will be identical to that of Saturday, with the same test design for the different classes and the same start times. It will undoubtedly be the key day of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, in which the winners’ podium will be finished and the prizes will be awarded to the best crews.

At the official presentation of the trophy, held this afternoon at the Monte Real Club de Yates, all attendees agreed on the importance of the event as one of the unavoidable sailing events in Galicia, which makes Baiona the nerve center of the world nautical, with the best crews competing in the incomparable setting of the Rías Baixas.

The president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez; the commanding director of the Naval Military School, Ignacio Cuartero; the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the General Secretary for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez; and the deputy of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Consuelo Besada. The vice-president of Bodegas Terras Gauda, Antón Fonseca, also took part; and the territorial director of ABANCA, Walter Álvarez, representing the sponsors of the event.

In addition to Terras Gauda and ABANCA, in this 2018 they collaborate with the Prince of Asturias Trophy ¡HOLA!, Ramada Storax, AXA Seguros, Comunica, Volvo Autesa, Martin Miller, Coca Cola, Aceites Abril, Solventis, Vanguard, Gadis, Paradores, San Simon, Tactic Media, Tuypan, Pereira, Helly Hansen and Nea.

Guaranteed excitement with the best crews on the water

Pending the deadline for registration, which will remain open for a few more days, fifty crews have already confirmed their presence at the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, guaranteeing excitement in the water, and it is estimated that there will be more than half thousands of sailors participating.

After having won the 2017 Rolex Giraglia and participated in this year’s Copa del Rey, the “Giulietta” arrives in Baiona from Cascais, a great ship that, despite not being a great connoisseur of the Rías Baixas, is willing to complicate it. things to the Galician crews. Two other teams to take into account will also sail with a Portuguese accent, José Carlos Prista’s “Xekmatt” and Delmar Conde’s “Porto de Aveiro”. The “MBA Atlántico”, the “Porto Caro 2”, the “Farofino” are three other sailboats that will make up the Portuguese fleet of the Prince of Asturias.

The recent winners of the Rías will not make it easy for the Portuguese neighbors, who will also try to win the Baiona prizes to boast of a double in the two great Galician competitions. They are the “Pairo VIII” of José Luis Freire with Luis Bugallo at the controls, the “Bosch Service Solutions” of Ramón Ojea, “La Burla Negra” of Juan José Martínez, the “Balea Dous” of Luis Pérez and the “Lacazán” by Sonia Cortazar.

Except for unexpected surprises, we will also see the “Aceites Abril” of the Pérez Canal brothers, the “Solventis” armed by the Moro brothers and the “Starfighter” of Julio Rodríguez in prominent positions in the classification, along with the “Mirfak” or the “ Arroutado”, other crews that promise to fight on the water to win the final victory.

A 6×6 with a female accent

Six identical boats with six sailors on board will once again star in the HELLO! Ladies Cup, an exclusively female competition in which some of the best athletes on the peninsular nautical scene meet every year. This year the crews arrive from Galicia, Madrid, the Basque Country and Portugal.

A 100% inclusive ship

With the aim of continuing the inclusion work that it carries out throughout the year through its Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities, the Monte Real Yacht Club will once again take to the water in the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, for the fourth consecutive year, a 100% inclusive ship, the AXA Seguros.

Aboard a Beneteau Oceanis 31, a crew made up of people with different intellectual disabilities from the Juan María de Nigrán Center will compete in the coastal races scheduled for the Open class over the weekend. They will be accompanied by a couple of monitors from their association and two specialized trainers from Monte Real.

An extensive social program in the village of Monte Real

As in previous years, the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy will have a great atmosphere on land thanks to the village set up at the Monte Real Club de Yates, where sailors will be able to enjoy different moments courtesy of the sponsors. Breakfast will be served before going out to sea and there will be beer and gin and tonic tastings and seafood dinners at the end of the different days. A screen will also be installed to relive the best moments of each day and see the performance of the different crews on the water.

On the opening day on Friday, Onda Cero Vigo will broadcast its morning programming, especially dedicated to the trophy, from Monte Real itself. And on Saturday night the event’s big party will be held, which will begin at eight in the afternoon with the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards ceremony, will continue with a fellowship dinner and fireworks, and will last until well into the morning.

The most select sailing in Spain at the National Sailing Awards

The Monte Real Club de Yates will once again bring together the highlights of the year in the Spanish nautical scene at the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala, which will be held on Saturday from eight in the afternoon. Hosted by the Galician Television presenter, Carlos Macía, and the club’s communication manager, Rosana Calvo, the awards will be given at the gala to the best shipowner and boat of the year, to the best Olympic and regatta teams, to the one-design most outstanding in this 2018 and also the Mariano Aguado Communication Award.

Among the attendees will be great names in sailing in Spain such as Támara Echegoyen and Antonio “Ñeti” Cuervas-Mons representing MAPFRE, who will be awarded for their brilliant performance in the Volvo Ocean Race; the Canarian skipper Rayco Tabares and the rest of the crew of the “Princesa Yaiza”, who in 2018 were proclaimed five-time J80 world champions; the outstanding point guard Luis Senís in possession of two consecutive titles of The Nations Trophy; or José María Meseguer who, aboard the “Pez de Abril” won the Queen’s Cup and the King’s Cup this year.

OFFICIAL PRESENTATION STATEMENTS

José Luis Álvarez, president of the Monte Real Yacht Club:

“This 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival in Galicia of the Military Naval School, our great partner in this Prince of Asturias Trophy. We also commemorate the fact that 525 years ago the caravel Pinta arrived in Baiona with the news of the discovery of America. And we are already celebrating the fifth anniversary of the first trip around the world, of Magellan and Elcano. And so, with the memory of these three great anniversaries, it is how I present the Prince of Asturias Trophy. As a competition with a great tradition that we celebrate hand in hand with the Naval Military School, in a town closely related to the sea such as Baiona and with the same enthusiasm of those who one day ventured to travel the world aboard a sailboat. ”

Ignacio Cuartero, commander director of the Naval Military School:

“Seafaring training is an essential part of learning for all Navy officers and participation in regattas is the key point of this training. The Rías Baixas are also an exceptional classroom to learn navigation in all its aspects, and the Prince of Asturias Trophy has the good fortune to bring both things together. We will attend this thirty-third edition with all the school sailboats that the Naval School has and we will participate with a female crew in the HELLO! Ladies Cup”

Antón Fonseca, Vice President of Bodegas Terras Gauda:

“For Terras Gauda it is an honor to be here for another year, in a place where we feel at home due to the human quality of the people who organize both the Prince of Asturias Trophy and the National Sailing Awards. The Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities is the perfect example of all the good that Monte Real does and I only hope that the relationship that unites Terras Gauda with the club lasts for many more years”

Walter Álvarez, territorial director of ABANCA:

“For ABANCA it is a great pride to be present at a sailing event that brings together the Galician, national and international elite. Our participation in this trophy is a true reflection of the entity’s commitment to the world of sport and the sea, betting on values such as the desire for personal improvement, perseverance or teamwork. The Prince of Asturias Trophy is the great sailing festival in Galicia and it will undoubtedly be a success”

Despite having suffered the breakdown of the maincar and the cracking of the sail, electrical problems on board, the injury of “Ñeti”, the shocks that the death of a fisherman in Hong Kong waters produced in the fleet and the disappearance In the sea of a Sun Hung Kai Scallywag crew member, or the hardness of some stages, MAPFRE managed to hold firm until the end, making Spain dream of a victory and bringing home the best result in the history of the competition to date .

For all these reasons, the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards will honor Xabi Fernández (skipper), Joan Vila (navigator), Rob Greenhalgh (chief watch), Pablo Arrarte (chief watch), Willy Altadill (trimmer/helm), Blair Tuke (trimmer/rod), Támara Echegoyen (trimmer), Antonio “Ñeti” Cuervas-Mons (bow), Sophie Ciszek (bow) and Ugo Fonollá (reporter on board) as the best regatta team of the year.

The Monte Real Club de Yates will host the award ceremony next Saturday, September 1, at 8:00 p.m., after the end of the second day of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy. It will be attended, on behalf of MAPFRE, by Támara Echegoyen from Galicia and Antonio “Ñeti” Cuervas-Mons from Cantabria.

· The first news agency in the world in Spanish will receive the Mariano Aguado Communication Award from the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards for its dissemination of current events in the world of sailing in Spain

The EFE Agency has been honored this year with the Mariano Aguado Communication Award from the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards for its dissemination of current sailing events in Spain, bringing this sport closer to millions of readers around the world.

The jury that awards the awards wanted to recognize the work carried out by EFE to publicize the activity of Spanish clubs, teams and athletes in both national and international competitions, thus facilitating knowledge of their achievements and promoting their informative journey.

About to complete 80 years of experience, EFE is currently the first news agency in Spanish and the fourth in the world, with a network of 3,000 journalists of 60 different nationalities that allows it to spread some 3 million news items a year to more of 2,000 media outlets.

The sports director of the agency, Luis Villarejo, will be in charge of collecting, next Saturday, September 1 in the fishing village of Baiona, one of the six awards that will be presented at the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club, coinciding with the Prince of Asturias Trophy.

After having been editor-in-chief of the newspaper Marca, director of communication for the Real Madrid player squad and head of communication for the Higher Sports Council, Villarejo has been, since 2016, the most visible head of sports for the EFE agency. The man from Madrid, who also holds the bronze medal for sporting merit, has been one of the architects of Spanish sailing having, within the agency, a space reserved for its dissemination throughout the world.

In addition to EFE, this year the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards will be received by the J80 “Princesa Yaiza” (monotype of the year), the 470 crew formed by Silvia Mas and Patricia Cantero (Olympic team of the year), the Swan 42 “Pez de April” (boat of the year) and Luis Senís (skipper of the year). The last prize that remains to be revealed, which will recognize the regatta team of the year, will be announced next Friday.

In a gala that will be held, as has become a tradition, within the framework of the Prince of Asturias Trophy of the Monte Real Yacht Club, the crew of the Swan 42 “Pez de Abril” will collect the award that distinguishes it as the best of the year after having achieved victory, in this 2018, in two of the most prestigious nautical competitions in Spain, the Copa de la Reina and the Copa del Rey. The team, which in 2017 won silver in the sailing world championship, also achieved a meritorious second place in Palmavela.

At the head of the “Pez de Abril” of the Portman Yacht Club is José María Meseguer, a businessman from Murcia who started sailing when he was 40 years old, after taking an introductory course in light sailing. After making the leap to the cruise ship and changing ships, his desire and drive have made a crew rise to the top to which he has applied, according to what he says, company management criteria: creating an excellent human team, giving them resources and letting them work coordinated under good leadership.

Meseguer will share the stage in Baiona with another of the great names of sailing in Spain in this 2018, the Valencian Luis Senís, who will receive the award at Monte Real that distinguishes him as the best shipowner of the year for the great work carried out at the head of the “ Dr. Senís Clinics” (Porrón IX).

In its resolution, the jury of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards wanted to highlight the upward evolution of a project that was born years ago as an amateur but has grown non-stop until it reaches the highest level. They are currently Swan 45 world champions and their intention is to retain the title in 2018 at the Rolex Swan Cup to be held in Porto Cervo in mid-September.

In the long sports resume of the new Luis Senís National Sailing Award there are also 4 SM La Reina trophies, 4 victories in Palmavela, 3 runners-up in the Copa del Rey de Vela and 5 Spanish ORC championships.

His last victories were achieved just a few weeks ago in Mallorca. After winning the Copa del Rey in its category, the “Clínicas Dr. Senís” was simultaneously proclaimed the winner, for the second consecutive year, of one of the most important titles in cruising sailing, the Nations Trophy Mediterranean League 2018.

· After winning silver at the Olympic Sailing World Championship held this August in Denmark, the 470 women’s tandem will receive the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for the Olympic Team of the Year in Baiona

The Catalan Silvia Mas (Club Nautic S’Arenal) and the Canarian Patricia Cantero (Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria) have been chaining national and international successes for several seasons and their goal is now at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The Catalan Silvia Mas, 21, and the Gran Canarian Patricia Cantero, 28, will collect the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for the Olympic Team of the Year on September 1 at the Monte Real Club de Yates (Baiona).

The jury that awards the awards wanted to recognize the 470 female tandem for its spectacular sporting career throughout this year, a journey that sealed with silver at the Olympic Sailing World Championship held this August in Aarhus (Denmark). ), with which they managed to qualify Spain for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Mas and Cantero started sailing together just two years ago, after completing the projects they had with their previous partners, and since then they have achieved great regularity. They train in Mediterranean and Atlantic waters, supported by their respective clubs (Club Náutic S’Arenal and Real Club Náutico de Gran Canarias), and their first official competition was the 48th Trofeo Princesa Sofía, in which they debuted as a team with a meritorious third Market Stall.

Later came the bronze in the World Sailing in Santander, the silver in the World Cup Series in Hyéres, and the sixth place achieved in the World Championship held in Thessaloniki, which allowed them to sneak into the world top ten of 470.

They also achieved victory in the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), placed among the top three crews of the European Championship that was held in Bulgaria, and their last great feat was the silver achieved in the Olympic Sailing World Championship, held this August in Denmark.

In Danish waters, Mas and Cantero managed to qualify Spain for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and it is in the Japanese capital where they have their sights set, since their highest aspiration today is to be the Spanish that represent the country in the class 470 and go home with a medal.

Before that, the Catalan-Canarian team will collect in Baiona the highest distinction they have been awarded so far, the award that recognizes them as the best Olympic Team of the Year. The crew of the “Hotel Princesa Yaiza” will receive the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for the one-design of the year next September in Baiona after having made history in Spanish sailing by becoming five-time world champion in the J80 class in 2018.

In the championship for the world title held last July in the French town of Les Sables d’Olonne, the sailboat led by Rayco Tabares from Lanzarote not only added his fifth title, but also the fourth in a row, after the victories of 2015 in Kiel, 2016 in Sotogrande and 2017 in Southampton. The first of the world titles had been achieved in 2009 in Santander.

The “Princess Yaiza Hotel” signed this absolute record in the history of the 8 meter long monotypes representing the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife and with a crew of champions on board. A team formed by the canary Rayco Tabares, five-time world champion; Héctor González and Lai Torres, with 4 world titles to their credit; and Alfredo González and Alejandro Bethencourt, with three titles each.

In gala of the Premios Nacionales de Vela Terras Gauda which will be held at the Monte Real Club de Yates on September 1, the leader of the Princesa Yaiza, Rayco Tabares, will continue to write his name in capital letters in the history of Spanish sailing, receiving what will be his second national award. The first was picked up in 2016, as skipper of the year, after having achieved, at just 32 years old, his third world championship, something that no one had achieved until now.

Promotion of ABANCA and Monte Real for children’s sailing in Galicia

  • Officials from ABANCA and the Monte Real Yacht Club signed an agreement this morning in Baiona to continue promoting children’s sailing in Galicia
  • The promotion of sailing among the youngest has been for years one of the fundamental axes of the sponsorship strategy of the bank based in Galicia
  • Thousands of children have been able to start practicing nautical sports thanks to the support that the entity has provided for years to the Monte Real Sailing School

ABANCA and the Monte Real Yacht Club signed an agreement this Wednesday in Baiona to continue promoting children’s sailing in Galicia. It is an agreement that renews those reached between both entities in previous years and that will allow hundreds of children to start practicing nautical sports through the Monte Real Sailing School.

The commercial director of ABANCA, Gabriel González Eiroa, was in charge of signing this morning with the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, the agreement thanks to which the club will be able to maintain the dinghy, cruise and adapted sailing activities that done throughout the year.

The Galicia-based bank has also opted this year for the Solidarity Vertiathlon, an event organized by the city council and the Baiona club that aims to raise funds so that people with functional diversity can sail in the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School. What will be the fourth edition of the test will be held on September 15 in the bay and several streets of the fishing village.

ABANCA’s agreement with the Monte Real Yacht Club stems from the close relationship that the bank maintains with sailing in all its aspects, due to its educational, sporting and economic values. In addition to supporting basic and competition sailing, ABANCA supports different business projects related to the nautical sector.

In 2016, ABANCA received the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for the best sponsor for its commitment to grassroots sailing through the support it provides to numerous sailing schools, clubs and organizations.

April Oils wins its fourth crown of the Count of Gondomar

The sailboat from Ourenses Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal adds its fourth victory in the historic trophy of the Monte Real Club de Yates after those achieved in 2013, 2016 and 2017

· In the ORC 3 class the victory went to Pedro Pazos’ Oral Group Galimplant and in ORC 4 Jean Claude Sarrade’s Fend la Bise managed to climb to the top of the podium

· In the real-time competition of the monotypes J80 and Fígaro, Okofen by Javier de la Gándara and Erizana by Santiago Meygide won the laurels

· The next big event of the Monte Real Yacht Club will be on August 31, September 1 and 2 with the thirty-second edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy

The 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy said goodbye to Baiona this Wednesday with a final day in which the intense fog that covered the surroundings of the Cíes Islands wanted to take away the limelight from the competition, forcing the start of the competition to be postponed for more than three hours. the tests and to modify the location of the regatta field to guarantee the safety of the participants.

In spite of everything, and although with quite a few difficulties, the regatta committee, led by Fernando Giraldo, was able to start one of the two tasks foreseen in the final program and the entire fleet was able to dispute a windward-leeward course that decided the final ranking.

The crews that had been in the lead from previous days did not disappoint and the classification, although with some surprises, hardly changed. The Aceites Abril of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by the Ourenses Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, won its fourth title and became part of the select group of boats with three or more Counts of Gondomar to its credit, such as the Ardora of Alfonso Paz Andrade and Julio Babé, the Castrosúa skippered by Willy Alonso, or José Luis Freire’s Pairo.

It was precisely Pairo VIII, who did not compete on the last day, that escaped one more year, at the hands of Aceites Abril, the competition’s grand prize, but the crew from Vigo, led by the young Luis Bugallo, and with several of the recent J70 Corinthian European Champions on board, he did not leave Baiona empty-handed. In the Carrumeiro Chico stage, Freire’s pupils, with former Copa América Laureano Wizner contributing his experience as a tactician, became the new Spanish Altitude Champions of the Galicia Zone.

The almost 100 miles between Baiona and the Corcubión estuary, turning the Carrumeiro Chico, was once again the star stage of the forty-third edition of the Conde de Gondomar, and won two of the competition’s great awards: the Spanish championship for height, which was won by the Pairo of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo; and that of the winner of the stage in real time, which went to the Yess of the Portuguese Rui Ramada. Wearing the Monte Real necklace, the Portuguese crew was the fastest to complete the test, taking 15 hours and 26 minutes to complete it. The mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, was in charge of giving them the award at the closing of the event held in Baiona.

At the awards ceremony for the 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, the Aceites Abril repeated its climb to the stage since, in addition to collecting the overall winner award, the Ourenses were the winners of the Storax ORC 1-2 class, which they led from the first test and they resolved with a first place in the last assault. Completing the class podium were Francisco Gude’s Siradella, from the Real Club Náutico de Portosín; and the Pairo VIII of Luis Bugallo, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo.

In the PSA Retail ORC 3 class, the Salona 37 Oral Group Galimplant, owned by owner and helmsman Pedro Pazos, was the best, taking first prize to the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo. Emigdio Bedia’s Gorilón, from Real Club Marítimo de Santander, was second, three points behind the champion and three points ahead of Javier Montenegro’s Marara IV, which came third.

The Coca Cola ORC 4 class was the one that underwent the most variations throughout the championship, but there were 3 boats that stood out above the rest and finally took the winners’ podium. They were the Balea Dous from Rodeira, the Fend la Bise from Monte Real and La Burla Negra from Castrelo de Miño. They reached the final tied on points, and their dispute at the last pole was decisive for Jean Claude Sarrade, who led the Fend la Bise del Monte Real to the top of the podium. Balea Dous by Luis Pérez and La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez took the second and third prizes respectively.

In the real-time competition of the J80 monotypes, grouped in the Martin Miller J80 class, the undisputed winner was Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, in which the historic round-the-world racer and Diego Fernández alternated at the helm; completing the crew with Jaime de la Gándara and Jaime Barreiro. They signed three first places in the three contested races and revalidated the title that they had already achieved in the previous edition with forcefulness. The second and third position went to Virazón by Miguel Lago, and Namasté by Luis de Mira.

The Erizana was proclaimed champion in the Rías Baixas Fígaro class by the young Santiago Meygide who, at just 26 years old, led his team to the top of the podium. The sailboat closed the best card of the entire fleet, scoring three first places in the boxes of the three races held. The Monte Real figaro showed absolute dominance over his rivals, whom he gave no respite throughout the entire competition. Thus, Adrián Irago’s Bouvento and Gonzalo Baamonde’s Silleiro had to settle for second and third place.

Those in charge of delivering the prizes to the winners of the 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy were the deputy general manager of SabadellGallego, Pablo Junceda; the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the Deputy Delegate for Tourism of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Santos Héctor Rodríguez; the head of the provincial sports service of the Xunta de Galicia, Daniel Benavides; the president of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde; the managing director of Storax, Rui Ramada, the head of sales PSA Retail Vigo, Rafael Montes; and the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez.

After the farewell of the Count of Gondomar, the Baionese club is now preparing for its great event in the 2018 racing calendar, the Prince of Asturias Trophy, which this year will be held on August 31, September 1 and 2.

The Count of Gondomar enters his final stretch

  • The forty-third edition of the historic trophy organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates will be decided this festive Wednesday with the last two tests
  • The dispute for the podiums is maximum with the sailboats that are in the lead separated from each other by the minimum or even tied on points in several of the categories
  • The Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers, leader of the ORC 1-2 class, will try to prevail over the Pairo VIII of Luis Bugallo and revalidate the victory achieved in 2017
  • The Oral Group Galimplant will fight for the laurels of ORC 3 and in ORC 4 we will see how the tie between Balea Dous , Fend la Bise and La Burla Negra is broken
  • In monotypes J80 and Fígaro, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen and Santiago Meygide’s Erizana are the ones with the best results so far

The forty-third edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club with the sponsorship of Banco Sabadell, enters its final stretch this Wednesday, a Santiago holiday, with the celebration of the last two tests.

The excitement is guaranteed on the water with a maximum dispute for the podiums, since the sailboats that are in the lead in several of the categories are separated from each other by the minimum or even tied on points.

If everything goes according to plan and the weather permits, the regatta committee will honk the start of the final day at twelve noon at the Cíes Islands anchorage, where the entire fleet will face each other in two windward-leeward courses .

In the Storax ORC 1-2 class, the Pérez Canal brothers’ Aceites Abril , which is in the lead after the first race, will try to maintain the lead and prevent Luis Bugallo’s Pairo VIII from taking it away. Ourenses arrive confidently in the final after having won the two previous editions of the Conde de Gondomar, but José Luis Freire’s team will not make it easy for them. Nor should we lose sight of Francisco Gude’s Siradella in this category.

The Oral Group Galimplant of Sanxenxo, armed, led and skippered by Pedro Pazos, will fight for the laurels of the PSA Retail ORC 3 class, which competes with boats such as the Gorilón de Emigdio Bedia, of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, among others.

The Coca Cola ORC 4 class is where the competition is tighter, with the top three boats tied on points. Are the Balea Dous by Luis Pérez, from the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira, winner of the previous edition of the Conde; the Fend la Bise del Monte Royal Yacht Club, skippered by Jean Claude Sarrade; and La Burla Negra of the Castrelo de Miño Yacht Club, with Juan José Martínez at the controls.

In the J80 one-design competition, in the Martin Miller class, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen would have to do very badly not to win the grand prize of the trophy. The first two places signed in the initial tests allowed him to separate 7 points from the second and third classified, which are Javier Martínez’s Cunichán and Miguel Lago’s Virazón . We found the same situation in the Rías Baixas Fígaro class, where Santiago Meygide ‘s Erizana skirted the coastal ones on the first and second days and is comfortably leading.

The last two tests of the 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy will begin tomorrow, Wednesday at noon and in the afternoon, at five, the awards ceremony will be held at the Monte Real Club de Yates, with the assistance, among other authorities, of the deputy director General of Sabadell-Gallego, Pablo Junceda; the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the deputy delegate for tourism of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Santos Héctor Rodríguez; the head of the provincial sports service of the Xunta de Galicia, Daniel Benavides; the president of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde; the managing director of Storax, Rui Ramada, the manager of PSA Retail Vigo, Daniel Martín; and the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez.

The Pairo VIII is crowned the new champion of Spain of height in the Count of Gondomar

  • The crew of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by the young Luis Bugallo, won the Spanish high-altitude championship in the Galicia area in the Carrumeiro Chico stage
  • Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen strengthened its climb to the podium of the J80 class after chaining a new victory on the second day of the trophy held today
  • In the ORC 4 class, the cangueses of the Balea Dous managed to rise from third to first position and in the Figaro class, the Erizana of Santiago Meygide repeated the victory
  • The 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy concludes on July 25 with the last two tests of the competition and the awards ceremony for the winners

The Pair VIII of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo was crowned the new Spanish Altitude Champion of the Galicia area in the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, which is being held these days in the Galician estuaries under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club and sponsored by Banco Sabadell .

The sailboat, armed by José Luis Freire, captained by Luis Bugallo and with former Copa América Laureano Wizner as tactician, won the title after completing the Carrumeiro Chico stage, almost 100 round-trip miles between Baiona and the estuary from Corcubión, in 15 hours and 47 minutes.

The people from Vigo won the title despite not being the fastest to finish the race, since Rui Ramada’s Yess , from Monte Real Club de Yates, was the first to cross the finish line. He did it 20 minutes before the Pairo and 10 minutes before the April oils of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, who after the compensation of times was placed at the head of the Storax ORC 1-2 class and at the top of the general classification of the trophy.

In class ORC 1-2, behind the April Oils and the Pairo VIII , both from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, placed the Siradella of the Real Club Náutico de Portosín, skippered by Francisco Gude; and in the PSA Retail ORC 3 class, the provisional podium positions are occupied by Oral Group Galimplant by Pedro Pazos (Royal Club Náutico de Sanxenxo), the Gorilón by Emigdio Bedia (Real Club Marítimo de Santander) and the Marara 4 by Javier Montenegro (Club Marítimo Rías Baixas).

After arriving in Baiona at dawn and resting on Sunday, the big ships will return to the water next Wednesday to compete in the last two tests of the Count of Gondomar at the Cíes anchorage, two windward-leeward batons in which the sailboats will also participate class ORC 4 and monotypes J80 and Figaro.

The latter took to the water today to complete their second round of the championship, a 24-mile coastal race that took them from the interior of the Bay of Baiona to the Subrido beacon, in the vicinity of Cabo Home, where they turned to return back to Baiona passing through Bondaña, in the Toralla area.

The test took place with a northwest wind of between 8 and 10 knots that seemed like it was not going to give the fleet any problems, but right at the end, when the sailboats were already close to the finish line, those sailing at the head of the fleet fell in a pit that stagnated them and allowed those who came behind to reach them and even surpass them.

One of the boats that suffered the most from the whims of the wind was Luis García Trigo’s Unus, which after signing a spectacular regatta taking the entire fleet to its stern, was relegated to the last position of the Coca Cola ORC class table. Four.

In this same category, the Balea Dous de Rodeira, led by Luis Pérez, managed to rise from third to first position, dropping the Fend la Bise by Jean Claude Sarrade (Monte Royal Yacht Club) and La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez (Club Náutico Castrelo de Miño) to second and third place respectively.

In the Martin Miller J80 class, Okofen del Monte Real Club de Yates, which today reinstated Javier Gándara as skipper, consolidated its climb to the podium after chaining another victory. Also outstanding was the performance of Javier Martínez’s Cunichán , who came seventh on the first day and, after a great regatta, pocketed the provisional silver. Third place is occupied by Miguel Lago’s Virazón .

In the battle waged by the Figaros in the Rías Baixas class, Santiago Meygide’s Erizana once again stood out, chaining two first places in the two races held to date. In second and third position are Gonzalo Baamonde’s Silleiro and Adrián Irago’s Bouvento .

The Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy will bid farewell to its forty-third edition next Wednesday, July 25, the Santiago Apóstol holiday, starting at noon at the Cíes Islands anchorage, with a final menu made up of two sleeves for all classes .

The contenders for the throne of the 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy began heading towards the podium this Saturday on the first day of competition, which was held in the Galician estuaries with the fleet divided into two sections and a different layout for each of them. they.

The largest boats, of the Storax ORC 1-2 and PSA Retail ORC 3 classes, with the star stage of the Carrumeiro Chico on their menu of the day, had to deal with a wind that seemed to be the protagonist of the day. It forced them to delay their departure for half an hour, slowed down their navigation in the Carallones area and even left them stuck in the vicinity of the Cíes.

The boats that a priori started as favourites, the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers and the Pairo VIII, owned by José Luis Freire and skippered by Luis Bugallo, fulfilled expectations and were placed at the head of the fleet from minute one. Both opted for the route further to the west, around the outside of the Cíes Islands, and little by little the rest of the sailboats joined them.

It was precisely this choice that made navigation difficult for them, since they found themselves with less intensity of wind than the small boats, which opted for the interior of Cíes to go up to Camouco (Ons) and were able to complete the test, of about 30 miles away, quite agile.

In the Coca Cola ORC 4 class, the winner of the day was Jean Claude Sarrade’s Fend la Bise, from the Monte Real Club de Yates. He took just over 5 hours to finish the route and placed first in the provisional classification. They are followed, in second and third place, by La Burla Negra of the Castrelo do Miño Yacht Club, captained by Juan José Martínez; and the cangueses of Balea Dous, with Luis Pérez at the helm.

In the Martin Miller J80 class, competing in real time, the Okofen did not suffer the absence of Javier de la Gándara, their usual skipper, and with Diego Fernández at the controls they managed to be the fastest of the day. He won, yes, by a narrow margin, since just a few seconds after him another of the favorites crossed the finish line to win the title, Virazón de Miguel Lago, also from Monte Real Club de Yates. The third provisional position was left by the Cansino of the commodore of Monte Real, Fernando Yáñez.

In real time, this inaugural stage of the Conde de Gondomar was also played by the Fígaros of the Rías Baixas class, in which he won, wearing a pendant from the organizing club, the Erizana de Santiago Meygide. Adrián Irago’s Bouvento and Gonzalo Baamonde’s Silleiro are second and third respectively.

The first day of the 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy ended for the small boats (ORC 4, J80 and Fígaros) with a seafood dinner and gin and tonic tasting at the Monte Real Yacht Club facilities. The competition of the big ones (ORC 1, 2 and 3) is still going on and is not scheduled to end until well into the morning or even after the day has dawned.

At this time, the Yess del Monte Real Club de Yates is still in the lead, with the Portuguese Rui Ramada at the wheel, who was also the first boat to tack the Carrumeiro Chico; the April Oils of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo; and Pairo VIII led by Luis Bugallo and Laureano Wizner.

The 43rd Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy will continue tomorrow, Sunday, starting at noon with the second test for the Coca Cola ORC 4, Martin Miller J80 and Rías Baixas Fígaro classes. The Storax ORC 1-2 and PSA Retail ORC 3 classes rest and return to competition on Wednesday, July 25, when the regatta committee will gather the entire fleet at the Cíes Islands anchorage for the two last tests of the trophy, two windward-leeward routes that will sentence the forty-third edition of the historic competition of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

The sailboats that were winners in the previous edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy will try to repeat their victory in the forty-third edition of the competition, which will be held from tomorrow Saturday in Galicia under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates and the sponsorship of Sabadell Bank.

The Aceites Abril of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, absolute winner last year, will go out on the water with the aim of signing their fourth victory after those achieved in 2013, 2016 and 2017. One more year, the people of Ourense start among the favorites and will undoubtedly be among the first to complete the star stage of the competition, the almost 100 miles to Carrumeiro Chico, which last year finished in 15 hours and 15 minutes.

Just five minutes after April crossed the finish line with his teammate from the Vigo nautical team and one of his most direct rivals, the Pairo VIII , who in 2018 will fight for the Count of Gondomar with a crew of young promises, among which are the recent J70 European champions Luis Bugallo, who will repeat as skipper, Gerardo Prego and Alberto Basadre. They will be accompanied on board by former Copa America native from Malaga, Laureano Wizner.

Both will meet again this Saturday in the Carrumeiro Chico test, from which the new Champion of Spain of Height of the Galicia Zone will emerge. The regatta will start at eleven o’clock in the morning from the bay of Baiona with a wind forecast that will start blowing from the northwest with up to 15 knots and that will shift to the north and decrease in intensity towards night.

The fastest boats could reach the Carrumeiro in about six or seven hours, depending on the wind and sea conditions, and finish the race about five hours later. The rest of the fleet is expected to return to Baiona well into the night or even early on Sunday.

In the rest of the classes, Unus by Luis García Trigo, from Monte Real; and the Balea Dous by Luis Pérez, from the Royal Yacht Club of Rodeira; will try to repeat victory in their respective classes, like the Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen , who will fight to remain the first of the J80 monotypes.

Among the thirty participating boats will also be, led by Francisco Gude, the Siradella , from the Real Club Náutico de Portosín, current Champion of Spain of Height of the Galicia Zone. Other participating boats are Oral Group Galimplant by Pedro Pazos (Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo), recent winner of the Ramiro Carregal Trophy; the Fend la Bise by Jean Claude Sarrade, from the Monte Real Club de Yates; the Gran Fisgón by Manuel López, from the Real Club Náutico de Palma; La Burla Negra , by Juan José Martínez, from the Náutico Castrelo de Miño; the Yess by Rui Ramada, from the Monte Real Yacht Club; the Gorilón by Emigdio Bedia, from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander; or the Marara IV by Javier Montenegro, from the Rías Baixas Maritime Club.

The forty-third edition of the Count of Gondomar, to be decided in three days starting tomorrow, Saturday, promises action and excitement on the water. For land, moments of relaxation are reserved, with seafood dinners and gin and tonic tastings in Baiona. On the holiday of July 25, once the winners’ podium has been defined with the Cíes walking sticks, the prizes will be awarded to the winners.

The double Olympic sailing champion, Theresa Zabell, visited the students of the Monte Real Club de Yates Sailing School this morning in Baiona, to convey her passion for the sea and some lessons on the care and protection of the environment.

The athlete, one of the most successful sailors in Spain, has chaired the Ecomar Foundation for years, created with the aim of educating the youngest in sustainable practices through sport, with special emphasis on the care and protection of the sea.

This morning in Baiona, Zabell reminded the little ones of the importance of recognizing the different types of waste that exist in order to recycle them correctly, of protecting the coastline from the rubbish that comes from the sea, and of keeping the beaches clean from the waste that man himself generated, such as cans, plastics, butts or glass.

Some lessons that were not new for the students of the Monte Real Sailing School, who for years have participated in several of the educational initiatives promoted by the Ecomar Foundation, such as the Logbook, the collection and recycling of batteries or the conferences beach cleaning.

In this sense, Zabell congratulated the Baionese club for its commitment to the environment and encouraged students and directors to continue promoting measures to make society aware of the need to take care of the sea.

Before finishing his visit, Zabell gave Monte Real three Optimist candles that the Ecomar Foundation donated to the club for its sports activities.
