The tandem formed by the Catalan Jordi Xammar (Barcelona, 1993) and the Galician Nicolás Rodríguez (Vigo, 1991) will receive the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award on September 5 in Baiona, which recognizes them as the best Olympic team.

The jury that awards the awards wanted to distinguish them for their brilliant performance throughout 2019, a year in which they managed to be runners-up in Europe and the world; in addition to achieving bronze in the Pre-Olympic (Test Event) of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and winning the World Cup in Miami, which in 2020 they revalidated for the second consecutive year.

The duo formed by the Barcelonan (Club Náutico Cambrils) and the Vigo (Real Club Náutico de Vigo) have been sailing together since September 2016, when Jordi Xammar’s partner at the time, Joan Herp, decided to leave competitions to continue with his studies . After finishing twelfth at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, the Catalan skipper needed a new crew member to prepare for Tokyo 2020 and found one in Nico Rodríguez. The man from Vigo, who was in the Canary Islands pending moving to the Netherlands to dedicate himself to dentistry, decided to put that trip on standby to accept Xammar’s proposal to start sailing with him.

Their debut as a team in a high competition test was in January 2017 in the United States Championship, in which they achieved a creditable third place, and since then they have chained success after success. They have participated in more than 15 high-level events, achieving podium finishes in 12 of them.

They currently train with Gideon Kliger and Juan de la Fuente, occupy the number 2 position in the world ranking and are the great hope for Spanish Olympic sailing.

Next Saturday, September 5, they will receive in Baiona the award for the best Olympic team at the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala, organized once again this year by the Monte Real Club de Yates within the framework of the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, which is held on days 4, 5 and 6 of September.

NOTICE OF RACE 35th PRINCE OF ASTURIAS TROPHY

 

The 35th Prince of Asturias Trophy will be held in the waters of the bay of Baiona and the Vigo estuary on September 4, 5 and 6, 2020, under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Naval Regatta Commission of the Naval School Marine Military. The 35th Prince of Asturias Trophy counts towards the Xunta de Galicia President Trophy.

1/ RULES

1.1. The regatta will be governed by:

a) The Racing Rules as defined in the
Sailing Regattas Regulation WS 2017 – 2020 (RRV).
b) Technical Cruise Regulations 2018-2020 and its
Annexes.
c) IMS Measurement Regulation.
d) Regulation of the ORC rating system.
and)[DP] J80 Class Monotype Regulations and their special adaptations of the J80 Galicia Fleet.
F)[DP] MRCYB Regulations for Monotype Figaro and Ladies Cup.
g) Special rules for offshore regattas (OSR) of WS, Category 4 (ORC) reduced, and the particular ones for J80 Galicia and Fígaros zone of the MRCYB. h) In the rules that govern this regatta, the notification[NP] refers to the fact that an infraction of this rule will not be a reason for protests between boats (modifies RRS 60.1(a)).
i) Special rules of the RFGV and SDX (General Secretariat for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia) for COVID19 prevention. [NP] [DP] (Annex I to this AR).
j) In the rules that govern this regatta, the notification[SP] “standard penalty” the Race Committee, or by the Protest Committee may apply a penalty without a hearing (modifies rule 63.1 and A5 of the RRS).

1.2. The official language of the regatta will be Spanish.

2/ ELIGIBILITY

2.1 Participants must meet the eligibility conditions reflected in Regulation 19 of the WS and in the prescriptions of the RFEV to said regulation.

2.2 Participants of nationality or with legal residence in Spain or who compete in boats attached to a Spanish club, must be in possession of the sports federation license for the year 2020. For foreign athletes who do not have a federative license or athlete medical insurance that insures them in case of an accident, they must prove that they have accident and illness insurance valid in Spain.

3/ ADVERTISING [NP][DP]

3.1 Participants may display advertising in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20 of the WS.

3.2 In accordance with WS Regulation 20, participants may be required to display advertising on the forward 20% of the hull on each side of the boat and on the sides of the boom, as well as possible advertising pennants on the backstay of each boat. All this will be provided at the regatta office once your order has been confirmed.

3.3 The Monte Real Club de Yates reserves the right to demand the elimination or substitution of any type of publicity, message or image displayed during the celebration of the event of the boats or the equipment of their crew members, which does not comply with the moral and ethical standards of general acceptance (Regulation 20 of the WS) or contravene the interests of the organizing club. This includes the celebration of the tests in the regatta field, in the club’s facilities or while it is available to the Regatta Committee.

* The owner or skipper of the boat with advertising will be asked to indicate or show the type of advertising that will be displayed during the regatta, for the approval of the Organizing Committee.

4/ PARTICIPATION

4.1 Participation in this Regatta is limited in ORC to cruisers with a single hull, with a length greater than 7.00 meters, with an ORC or ORC club certificate valid for 2020 and with a GPH of less than 780 s/mile, and must have declaration of complete set of sails, including your spinnaker or gennaker. Whoever does not have it declared, may participate, but will be penalized with 25% of the real time he does in the regatta; as well as the ORC called Open by the organization; Monotypes J80 and Monotypes Fígaro of the MRCYB with the female crews invited by the organization for the Ladies Cup trophy.

4.2 The skippers of the boats must be of legal age. The age of majority must be accredited by means of a photocopy of the DNI.

In case of taking a minor as a crew member, they must have the corresponding written authorization from the parents or guardians.
The responsibility of the minor during the regatta corresponds to the skipper of the boat where he is embarked.

4.3 The following groups and classes are established:

(*) In the OPEN CLASS, only those boats that due to their Gph would be forced to go in other classes, but that do not have a minimum competitive capacity, as well as vintage boats, especially slow designs, etc., may participate.

For those boats that due to their performance could compete in this class, but were more modern models or with materials and elements of high modulus, carbon, etc., the Organizing and Regatta Committee may classify it at its sole discretion in a class called OPEN EXTRA.

• In any case, the Regatta Committee and Organizing Committee will have the power to include, at its discretion, in the OPEN and OPEN EXTRA Group the boats it deems appropriate.

4.4 The Organizing and Regatta Committee reserves the right to admit the inscriptions, as well as to group the boats in the corresponding class or group.

4.5 To form a class or group, at least five boats must register in it.

5/ REGISTRATION

5.1 In this edition and as a preventive measure due to the extraordinary circumstances caused by Covid19, the maximum number of participating boats will be 70.

5.2 Registration and confirmation of registration.

5.2.1 The owner or person in charge of each boat must register and personally sign the registration form at the Regatta Office before 8:00 p.m. on September 3, 2020 (ORC, J80 and Ladies Cup) or on September 4, 2020. September 2020 before 8:00 p.m. (ORC 4, 5 and Open). Entries of boats that have made requests to the RFEV for the issuance or modification of their rating certificate after 6:00 p.m. the day before the start of the first race will not be accepted (except for a justified cause approved by the regatta committee).

5.2.2 The registration is conditioned to the presentation before the appointed time of the following documents:
a) Valid measurement certificate.
b) ORC habitability certificate (if applicable).
c) Current insurance policy, which covers civil liability (damage to third parties and property) or extension of coverage of civil liability and damage to third parties up to a minimum amount of 330,556.66 euros.
d) In case of displaying advertising, corresponding federal authorization.
e) Federation athlete license, original or photocopy (MANDATORY to submit along with the registration form).

6/ SPORTS PROGRAM

7/ NUMBER OF EVENTS AND ROUTE

7.1 The trophy consists of a maximum of:
– 6 tests for ORC 0-1-2-3-4 and Ladies Cup.
– 9 tests for J80.
– 2 tests for ORC 5, Open and Open Extra.
The trophy will be valid when at least one test is completed in the corresponding group.

7.2 The Sailing Instructions will detail the courses to be sailed.

8 / CLASSIFICATIONS

8.1 There will be a classification for each of the groups formed.
8.2 Rankings for ORC groups or classes will be established in accordance with RTC rule 204 and specified in the Sailing Instructions.
8.3 J80 and Ladies Cup will qualify in real time.

9/ SCORE

Appendix A and the downward scoring system described in the RRS will apply.

10/ INSPECTION AND MEASUREMENT. [DP][SP]

10.1 Security and measurement controls may be carried out daily by the Technical Committee.

10.2 The responsibility of attending this regatta having previously updated its Measurement Certificate, measuring the material with which it is intended to participate, is exclusively the registered skipper.

10.3 In no class may the number of crew members on board be changed during the regatta.

10.4 Points 102.3 and 200.1.b of the ORC, minimum crew weight, will apply in this regatta.

11/ SAFETY [NP] [DP]

11.1 All boats must be equipped with a VHF radio with channels 16, 69, 71 and 72.
11.2 It will be the responsibility of the owner or skipper of each boat to comply with the legal regulations established for recreational boats, both in general and in particular for their government, dispatch and security.

12/ PRIZES

The full list of prizes will be displayed at the TOA during the regatta. As a minimum, prizes will be awarded to the best classified in each of the groups ORC, Open, J80 class, and the Ladies Cup Trophy to the winning female crew in the Figaro class, the Conde de Barcelona Trophy to the best classified Portuguese crew in ORC according to the trophy regulations (**). The number of prizes for each class will depend on the number of registered in each of them.

(**) The Regulations of the different Trophies will also be available to the participants on the website of the Monte Real Club de Yates in its section on the Príncipe de Asturias regatta.

13/ IMAGE RIGHTS

The image rights of the event belong exclusively to the Monte Real Club de Yates.

During all the days of regatta and in the social events there will be photographic and television coverage.

14/ LOCAL MARINE REGULATIONS

Royal Decree 62/2008 establishes the conditions of maritime safety, navigation and human life at sea applicable to nautical-sports events.

Participants are warned, before the start of the tests, that the boats can only participate if they are legally dispatched to navigate the waters through which the test will take place, and if their skippers have sufficient qualifications for their government.

Participants must declare, adequately in advance of the start of the race, the insurance taken out, if applicable, including the risks covered and the limits of liability in accordance with the Notice of Race, being covered for participation in races nautical-sports.

15/ RESPONSIBILITY

All those who participate in this regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility.

Attention is drawn to Fundamental Rule 4, DECISION TO RACE, of Part 1 of the RRS which states:

“It is the exclusive responsibility of a boat to decide whether to participate in a test or continue in a regatta”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

BERTHS

The boats whose registration is accepted in this regatta will have a reserved and free mooring or anchoring place (mooring under the sole responsibility of the owner or skipper) during the celebration of the event, from August 30 to September 12.

See attached map, which indicates the area reserved for participants.
The Monte Real Club de Yates reserves the right to assign berths to the boats in strict order of registration, depending on their size and draft.

SOCIAL EVENTS AND AWARDS DELIVERY

The awards ceremony for the 35th PRÍNCIPE DE ASTURIAS TROPHY will take place at the club’s facilities on September 6, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. Any other social event scheduled during the days of the tests will be published on the Official Notice Board (TOA) and on the club’s website in the regatta section.

 

ANNEX I

COVID-19 PROTOCOL FOR THE REGATTA [NP] [DP]

A : MEASURES COMMON TO THE WHOLE ACTIVITY:

A1) Interpersonal separation of 1.5m and/or the use of physical protection measures are established as fundamental measures, as established by the regulations, in addition to constant hand washing.

A2) Before attending the activity, participants must undergo a SELF-TEST to confirm symptoms. Do I have a fever, cough or shortness of breath?
A3) All participants must bring their own mask and hydroalcoholic gel with them for all activities.

A4) All participants who have any symptoms of COVID19 or have been in contact with someone infected, will not be able to access the facilities or carry out activities. In addition, they must immediately notify the technical manager of the facility or competition.

A5) It will be mandatory to wash hands at all entrances to the facilities with hydroalcoholic gel or soap, for at least 40 seconds and constantly, before and after each activity that is carried out.

A6) It will not be allowed to share food or drinks between participants, users and/or staff.

A7) All coaches and assistance personnel in water must carry an FFP2 mask and their own bottle of hydroalcoholic gel.

A8) The use of changing rooms is not recommended and they will be used only when necessary. Personal items will not be allowed in the changing rooms. Showers may not be used.

A9) The use of a mask will be mandatory at all times.

A10) In navigation situations in which the safety distance cannot be maintained, a mask will be used whenever conditions allow it and its use is not incompatible with the activity. In case of harsh sea, wind and/or rain conditions, the rain suit will be used to cover the nose and mouth. In addition, before sailing, special attention should be paid to the rest of the measures to minimize the risk of contagion:

– Take temperature prior to activity.
– Frequent hand washing.
– Do not exchange positions on the boats during the same day of activity.
– Disinfection of shared material.

B : OWN MEASURES FOR CRUISE SHIPS AND MONOTYPES ADDED TO THE COMMON MEASURES:

B1) Use of masks and safety distance of 1.5 m. during the actions of lowering and raising boats.

B2) Keep the crews in their own boat whenever they are on the jetty.

B3) Maintain a constant safety distance of 1.5m interpersonally when circulating or being on the slipway and pontoon.

B4) Use of a mask during transits through the pontoon.

B5) Use of a mask in all interior areas of the club.

B6) Hand washing with hydroalcoholic gel in all accesses.

B7) Carry hydrogel on board for constant hand washing of the crew.

B8) Daily disinfection of the ship.

B9) Obligation to use a bottle of water for each crew member. Do not share bottle

B10) Obligation for each athlete to carry their own supplies on board. Do not share food.

B11) Carry a minimum of 5 masks on board to be able to replace those that are damaged.

An exciting 45th edition of the Count of Gondomar concludes

 

· The Magical of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by Julio Rodríguez, won the grand prize of the 45th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy by winning the final general classification

The Yess Too of the Portuguese owner and skipper Rui Ramada once again won the prize for the fastest boat in the long stage of the Carrumeiro after completing the round trip to the mythical rock in first position

· In the Erizana Regatta, which was disputed by the sailboats that did not participate in the Carrumeiro test, the Deep Blue 2.0 of Vicente Cid of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo took victory in the ORC class.

· The Alboroto del Monte Real, led by Juan Ameneiro and with the Spanish champion Javier Aguado on board, was the clear winner of the J80 competition after signing three first places in the three tests held

· In the Figaro class, victory went to Patricio de Haz’s Serralleiras, which improved on the third place it had achieved on Saturday in the coastal class, winning the two windward-leeward races held this Sunday

· After the conclusion of the Count of Gondomar, the Monte Real Yacht Club is now preparing for the celebration of the Prince of Asturias Trophy on September 4, 5 and 6, which will again include the delivery of the National Sailing Awards

 

This Sunday concluded in Galicia a new and exciting edition of the Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, disputed during the last three days in the waters of the Rías Baixas, scene of the 5 tests put into play.

In what was the forty-fifth edition of the most traditional competition of the Monte Real Club de Yates, the crews were able to sail in very good weather conditions which, added to the equality and quality of the fleet, allowed them to enjoy a great championship .

After the celebration of the first two coastal ones on Friday and Saturday, with the ascent to Carrumeiro Chico and Camouco; the final day on Sunday featured two windward-leeward regattas, double-lap for the smaller boats and triple-lap for the big ones. They were two very disputed tests but they did not change to a great extent the initial classification derived from the coastal routes.

The Magical of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by Julio Rodríguez, was the great winner of the 45th Conde de Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, winning the final general classification. With Gonzalo Araujo as tactician and a crew made up of experienced sailors, the skipper from Vigo managed to rewrite his name in the Conde’s history of winners, who had already won in 2001 with the Starfisher.

The Magical was the winner of the Conde de Gondomar Regatta, which included the climb to Carrumeiro and the two barlosotas on Sunday; and left the Aceites Abril one more year on the verge of victory, just as it had happened in 2019. The boat of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo; obtained a meritorious second position and left the third position to the Arroutado of José Manuel Pérez, from the Real Club Náutico de Portosín, who completed three very good tests taking Javier la Gándara as tactician.

Another of the sailboats that aspired to the podium in this Count of Gondomar, the Yess Too of the Monte Real Club de Yates, of the Portuguese owner and skipper Rui Ramada, withdrawn from the competition on Sunday due to problems with the boat, had to settle for being the winner in real time of the long test of the competition, being the fastest to complete the round trip to the mythical rock.

In the Erizana Regatta, made up of the climb to Camouco and two barlosotas, the winner among the ORCs was the Deep Blue 2.0 by Vicente Cid, wearing a necklace from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo. La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez, from the Club Náutico Castrelo de Miño; and the Fend la Bise by Jean Claude Sarrade, from the Monte Real Club de Yates; They were second and third respectively.

In the J80 one-design real-time competition, the clear winner of the competition, with a triplet, was the Alboroto del Monte Real Club de Yates, skippered by Juan Ameneiro and with the Spanish champion Javier Aguado on board. He signed some splendid results, with three victories in the three contested races.

The Cansino by Fernando Yáñez managed to win the silver medal and the bronze was finally won by Santiago Estévez’s Spaco , who ousted Sergio Golpe’s Miudo from third place, who aspired to maintain third position on the last day but ultimately missed the podium.

The Fígaros del Monte Real Club de Yates also competed in this 45th Conde de Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, both in real time among themselves and in compensated with the ORCs. The final victory went to Serralleiras skippered by Patricio de Haz, followed in the classification by Leopoldo Llorente’s Bouvento and Agustín Marquina’s Tutatis . The president and commodore of the club, José Luis Álvarez and Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, participated in the awards ceremony held this afternoon at the Monte Real Club de Yates; the councilor of SabadellGallego, Juan Manuel Vieites; the director of Banco Sabadell’s Private Banking Galicia Sur, Pepe Celada; the director of large companies in Galicia Sur, Ramón Correa; and Adolfo García-Ciaño, regional director of Banco Sabadell. Also present were the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the tourism deputy of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Ana Laura Iglesias; and the territorial secretary of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo, Marta Iglesias.

With the award ceremony for the winners, the Monte Real Club de Yates put an end to a new edition of the Conde de Gondomar, its most traditional competition, and is now preparing to organize its other great sporting event of the year, the Prince of Asturias Trophy . Magical and Deep Blue lead the final day of the Count of Gondomar

The Dufour 34 Deep Blue 2.0 of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by Vicente Cid, was the winner this Saturday in Baiona of the second day of the 45th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, which is being held these days in the Rías Baixas under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club .

Despite the fact that the wind was harsh in the first few minutes, forcing a postponement that delayed the scheduled departure time by up to forty minutes, once the fleet left the Bay of Baiona heading for Camouco, everything unfolded with great agility. The ascent to Ons was very fast and the descent back, except for a momentary drop in the wind, was a true street runner.

Salseiro by Manuel Blanco (RCN A Coruña), Deep Blue by Vicente Cid (RCN Vigo), Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez (CN Castrelo), Fend la Bise by Jean Claude Sarrade (MRCYB) and Unus by Luis García Trigo (MRCYB) were the fastest throughout the race, always in the lead and well ahead of the rest of the fleet.

The coruñeses of salseiro (Dehler 44), the first to reach Camouco at a quarter past three in the afternoon, two and a half hours after leaving Baiona, they crossed the finish line at 4:31 p.m., signing the just over 27-mile distance of the test in less than four hours.

They were the fastest to complete the distance but they did not achieve the first position in the classification affected by the compensation of times, which favored the Dufour 34 Deep Blue and Burla Negra, both from the nautical company from Vigo, first and second in the provisional classification.

In third position is the Fend la Bise of Jean Claude Sarrade, of the Monte Real Club de Yates, another of the sailboats that will reach the final day with the possibility of making a podium if it manages to embroider the barlosotas, which everything indicates that they will be very close.

In the J80 competition, Juan Ameneiro’s Alboroto , with the Spanish champion Javier Aguado on board, was the fastest among the 8 meter one-designs, crossing the finish line at 16:48 and managing to beat the rest quite a few minutes. Cansino by Fernando Yáñez was in second place and Miudo by Sergio Golpe was third. They are all part of the regular J80 fleet of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

In the real-time classification of the Figaros, who also compete in compensated with the ORCs, the provisional podium was made up of the Leopoldo Llorente’s Bouvento , who is in the lead, followed by Patricio de Haz’s Serralleiras and Agustín Marquina’s Tutatis, in second and third position respectively.

After the conclusion of this second day of the coastal route, only the last two tests of the competition remain to be held, which will be much more technical, with windward-leeward routes between buoys. The Swan 42 of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo took the lead after having managed to beat the Yess Too of the Portuguese Rui Ramada in corrected time, who was the winner in real time by just two minutes difference with the team from Vigo.

The skipper of the Magical, Julio Rodríguez, predicts a very disputed and exciting final, as he assures that the crossing to the Corcubión rock was. “We disputed a very tough regatta with very strong rivals, with a lot of wind and a lot of waves. It was the first one we did with the Magical, and it has proven to be a very fast boat that can defend well the high rating it has”, assured the leader of the Swan 42, who also explained that they were about to pass the Yess Too, but that a spy break when they were arriving in Cíes prevented them from overtaking the Portuguese.

Once the competition is over on Sunday morning, the Monte Real Club de Yates, organizer of the competition, will host the awards ceremony for the winners at its facilities. The Portuguese sailboat Yess Too was once again the fastest boat to reach the Carrumeiro Chico in the initial stage of the 45th Conde de Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, which opened this Friday with the longest and most exciting test of the competition.

The crew of the Swan 45, armed and skippered by Rui Ramada and wearing a necklace from the Monte Real Club de Yates, rounded the Corcubión rock at six minutes past seven in the afternoon, eight hours after leaving Baiona, and managed to repeat the feat achieved in the previous edition.

A stable and constant wind, always above 14 knots and with gusts of up to 25; and the great equality between many of the crews, made the regatta a very close and exciting race, with practically the entire fleet very grouped during the route to the rock of the Corcubión estuary.

The departure was punctual as planned and at eleven o’clock in the morning the 8 participating boats undertook the adventure, after passing through an unmarking buoy and the Carallones beacon.

Despite starting with an off-line and having to take a penalty, Julio Rodríguez’s Magical was able to pick up the pace and managed to be the fastest to cross those first two points of the course. Those from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo announced that they were willing to give battle in the regatta, and they did so throughout the race, always staying among the leading boats and managing to be the second to tack the Carrumeiro, 11 minutes after Yess too. The tactic of Gonzalo Araújo from Vigo was the plus that the Swan 42 crew had.

Passing through Carallones, one of the few controversies of the day was experienced, motivated by the proximity of the Arroutado and the Yess Too, who got too close in a maneuver. A few yells were exchanged but the incident finally came to nothing and they both continued north, never straying too far from the group, although they eventually opted for different strategies.

While the Portuguese opened up more towards the sea, Portosin’s men, led by José Manuel Pérez and Javier de la Gándara acting as right-hand man, chose to stick closer to the coast. They went at a very good pace throughout the race, upwind easily, and managed to be the fourth to cross the Carrumeiro, 24 minutes after the first.

Ahead of them, in third position, is Aceites Abril , owned by the Pérez Canal brothers from Ourense, who managed to get 3 minutes out of the Sonenses and up to 20 minutes out of José Luis Freire’s Pairo VIII, their most direct rival in this type of competition. After turning the Carrumeiro, Luis Pérez Canal was very satisfied with the navigation carried out because, although they could not reach the rapid Swan, they did manage to keep their pulse, preventing them from getting too far away, which could benefit them in the compensation of final times.

He did so at seven forty in the afternoon, followed by Pairo VIII skippered by the young Luis Bugallo, who passed the Corcubión rock seven minutes later.

Crews from Galicia and Portugal will battle it out tomorrow, Friday, in the waters of the Atlantic to try to win the most exciting and complicated regatta in Galician sailing, the ascent to Carrumeiro Chico, a route of almost 100 miles of distance framed in the 45th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy, organized once again this year by the Monte Real Yacht Club.

There are few shallows in Galicia as well known as the Carrumeiro, a stone considered for many years one of the greatest dangers for navigation through the Galician estuaries. Right in the center of the entrance channel to the Corcubión estuary, and without buoys until 1863, this rock, which barely protrudes above the surface, has been involved in numerous shipwrecks throughout history.

In order to try to avoid them, first a bell buoy was placed on it, then a 5-meter metal tripod and then a conical buoy, but the storms swept these systems one by one, until in 1917 a solid concrete tower 10 meters high that has remained intact ever since.

The Little Carrumeiro

It is those shallows and that tower that the adventurous sailors who have signed up this year to try to complete the Carrumeiro Chico challenge will have to turn, a complicated regatta not only because of the distance, close to 100 miles, but also because it involves sailing between shallows rocks for many hours and both during the day and at night.

Among the eight crews that will participate in the event is the one led by Portuguese owner and skipper Rui Ramada, who has been participating in the competition since 1988 with different teams and on board up to 5 different boats.

In the last edition of the Conde de Gondomar, with the Yess Too (a Swan 45), they were the winners, also winning the Carrumeiro climb, which they won both in real time and compensated. They left Baiona with the entire fleet at 11 in the morning, rounded the Corcubión estuary lighthouse at around 7 in the afternoon and reached the finish line at 4:30 in the morning. They took 17 hours and 36 minutes to complete the 95.43-mile course.

Rui Ramada’s men achieved victory in the great Conde de Gondomar test but were more than 5 hours away from breaking the Carrumeiro Chico record, which has been held since 2011 by Cenor & De Dietrich (a Farr 50) which, with Martín Bermúdez de la Puente in front, managed to complete the regatta in 11 hours 56 minutes and 57 seconds.

Another of the boats that will sail to the Carrumeiro will be the Aceites Abril of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, with Pablo Iglesias as tactician. The Ourenses, wearing a necklace from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, will try to achieve their fifth victory at the Conde de Gondomar.

The yachtsman from Vigo is the one that will have the most representation in the long-distance event, since in addition to the Aceites Abril they will also compete in the Pairo 8 of José Luis Freire, skippered by Luis Bugallo; and the Magical by Julio Rodríguez, with Gonzalo Araujo in charge of the tactical part and the experienced English sailor Gill Sanders on board.

For the Monte Real Club de Yates, in addition to Yess Too, Marías also aspires to victory, led by another Portuguese, Manuel María Cunha.

The Real Club Náutico de Portosín will be represented by the Arroutado , by José Manuel Pérez, who will be accompanied by Javier de la Gándara. The sailor from Vigo, after years competing in the Conde de Gondomar aboard the J80 Okofen, returns to long-distance sailing with the Sonenses.

The Bon III, from the Náutico de Punta Lagoa, another of the regulars on the Carrumeiro Chico climb, will be led by Victor Carrión and will have Ana Sardiña on board, one of the few women registered for this regatta along with Gill Sanders from the Magical, Rita Rocha from the Yess Too or Vanesa Martínez, from Marara IV , from the Rías Baixas Maritime Club, who will once again skipper Javier Montenegro.

This year, after leaving Baiona at 11 in the morning, the forecast is that the sailboats will begin to cross the finish line well into the night, after more than 12 hours of uninterrupted navigation.

The Monte Real Club de Yates presented this Tuesday at a press conference a new edition of its most traditional competition, the Count of Gondomar, which in 2020 celebrates its 45th anniversary uninterruptedly.

“Few competitions have been able to complete 45 years of celebration doing it, moreover, uninterruptedly, and maintaining the essence with which they were created. This year, these two aspects take on, if possible, greater importance due to the situation that we have had to live through, which has complicated the future of numerous sports competitions. But from Monte Real, aware of the importance of continuing to bet on life and sport, we have made a great effort so that the Count of Gondomar could be celebrated” – José Luis Álvarez, president of the Monte Real Yacht Club

The trophy, one of the most charismatic of sailing in Spain, is being disputed once again this year thanks to the collaboration of Banco Sabadell, which has been betting on the Baiona club and deep-sea sailing for several editions.

The 45th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy will last for four days, coinciding, as has been the tradition, with the days surrounding July 25, Galicia’s Big Day. Thursday the 23rd will be the day of preparations, with the closing of inscriptions and the delivery of instructions to the participants. There will also be a meeting of patrons at Monte Real at eight in the afternoon.

The competition will begin on Friday 24 with the Conde de Gondomar Regatta, the most exciting of the trophy due to its long distance, almost 100 miles long. At eleven o’clock in the morning, the sailboats will set course, from the bay of Baiona, to the Carrumeiro Chico, in the Corcubión estuary, which they will have to turn around before starting the return.

There will be numerous hours of navigation passing through a large part of the Galician coast, a route in which the crews will be able to opt for an internal route, closer to the coast; or external, outside the Atlantic Islands National Park.

On Saturday the 25th, the Erizana Regatta will be held, with a shorter distance, in which the sailboats that did not compete on the opening day will participate. For them, the regatta committee will prepare a route that will have the Ons archipelago as the protagonist, with the sailboats rounding the Camouco lighthouse before returning to Baiona.

On Sunday the 26th, the last, more technical tests will be held for the entire fleet. At the anchorage of the Cíes Islands, starting at noon, several windward-leeward routes between buoys will be scheduled, some heats that will decide the winners of the 45th Count of Gondomar – Banco Sabadell Trophy.

It will be at the end of these tests when the crews return to land for the awards ceremony, scheduled for half past six in the afternoon at Monte Real. It will be attended by different authorities from the Xunta de Galicia, the Pontevedra Provincial Council and the Baiona council, as well as members of the board of directors of Monte Real and representatives and directors of Banco Sabadell.

In addition to the president and commodore of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez and Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, the General Director of Banco Sabadell, Pablo Junceda; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the provincial head of the sports service of the Xunta de Galicia, Daniel Benavides; and the deputy for sports from the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez.

 

The almost 100 miles from Baiona to Carrumeiro Chico, the biggest challenge for sailors

The mythical route from Baiona to Carrumeiro Chico, in Corcubión, with nearly 100 miles of distance, will once again be the star regatta of the competition and the greatest challenge for the participants. This is one of the most important long-distance races in Spain and a great challenge for the sailors, who will not only have to face the sea conditions but also the fatigue involved in haggling for so many hours.

In the previous edition, some boats took more than 24 hours to complete the route. The last winner of the Carrumeiro Chico climb, in 2019, was Yess Too , owned by the Portuguese owner and skipper Rui Ramada, after 17 hours and 36 minutes of sailing.

With several days to go before the registration deadline closes and the complete list of crews that will fight for a new victory in the Conde de Gondomar is known, two of the boats that have already announced their participation in the trophy are the pair and the Oils April .

The sailboats built by José Luis Freire and the Pérez Canal brothers are two of the historical participants in the competition, to which they have been coming for years and in which they have managed to write their names on the honor roll several times.

The Pairo is the ship that has added the greatest number of victories in the entire history of the Count of Gondomar. He has achieved a total of 6, three of them in the eighties (1983, 1984, 1988) and another three in the first years of the new millennium (2003, 2007 and 2009).

Aceites Abril continues in its wake with 4 victories, the same ones achieved by Paz Andrade’s Ardora and Castrosúa led by Willy Alonso. Luis and Jorge Canal’s boat has been the undisputed protagonist in recent years, taking the grand prize in 2013, and chaining three consecutive golds in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In the last edition, that of 2019, he was at the gates of achieving the fourth victory in a row because the Yess Too snatched the victory.

The Okofen, armed and skippered by the prominent sailor from Vigo Javier de la Gándara, won the Comunica Trophy this afternoon in Baiona, with which the Monte Real Club de Yates was able to finally close the J80 League that had had to suspend last month of March due to the state of alarm motivated by COVID19.

After three months of competition and another three of break, the one-design championship promoted by Monte Real said goodbye to Baiona with the fourth and last day of tests, in which the J80s competed in the last two regattas that ended up defining the podium of winners.

They were two sleeves that were held in complicated conditions due to the wind, which had many ups and downs, even disappearing at times, and which forced the area of the regatta field to be changed several times.

After having won the Galician Two-Way Cruise Championship a few days ago and reaching the final as a clear contender for the title, the Okofen did not disappoint. With Javier de la Gándara leading the team, the usual crew that Manel María Cunha joined on this last day, signed two first places in the two contested races and sentenced the championship.

With 13 points he won gold in the Comunica Trophy, leaving Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, who finished with 28 points, the silver medal. The Fuss was quite far from the first place they had aspired to since January, when they started winning on the first day of the league. He was, without a doubt, the best rival for Okofen and the one that came closest to beating him, although in the end he was quite a few points behind him.

Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino, who came third in the final, was unable to consolidate that third position, which was finally snatched away by José Luis Pérez’s Maija, with 40 points. Those of Yáñez, with 42 points, stayed just outside the podium, with a meritorious fourth position.

The Comunica Trophy puts an end to the Monte Real J80 League

The Comunica Trophy will decide tomorrow, Saturday in Baiona, the winners of the Monte Real J80 League, which was suspended last March due to the health situation caused by COVID-19

The Comunica Trophy will decide tomorrow, Saturday in Baiona, the winners of the J80 League of the Monte Real Club de Yates, the one-design competition of the Baiona club that was suspended last March due to the health situation derived from COVID-19.

Starting at three in the afternoon, the waters of the bay will be the scene of the last four tests of the competition, from which the design of the final classification and the winners’ podium will come out. The J80s will have to complete four double courses of the windward leeward type, between 2 and 3 miles of course with close hauls, two sterns and several maneuvers on buoys.

The weather forecast announces a typical summer day, with temperatures approaching 30 degrees and a wind that will blow from the north with an average of 5 or 6 knots and gusts of up to 10 knots at times.

The competition will be in real time and with direct judgment in the water, thanks to the presence of a judge who will rule in situ on the protests that may arise during the events. This will speed up the resolution of possible conflicts between sailboats without having to wait for the end of the races for their resolution on land, thus avoiding delaying the publication of the classifications.

The Okofen skippered by Javier de la Gándara, who just a few days ago won the Galician Two-Handed Championship, is leading the standings and aspires to revalidate the title it won in the previous edition of the J80 Winter League.

With 11 points, it is six ahead of its most direct rival, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, which is, with 17 points, the other sailboat with the best chance of winning the final victory.

Behind Okofen and Alboroto, although separated by quite a few more points, are Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino, which occupies third place in the provisional classification with 32 points, and José Luis Pérez’s Maija and Luis de Mira’s Namasté , who are fourth and fifth with 35 and 40 points respectively.

Once the tests in the water have finished, the Monte Real Club de Yates will host the awards ceremony for the winners, which will be held at around eight in the afternoon at the club’s facilities. It will be attended, among others, by several members of the board of directors of Monte Real as the organizing club, the Baiona city council and Comunica, the company sponsoring the event, a visual communication firm that offers its services throughout Galicia from the municipality of A Guarda, where its main headquarters are located. Monte Real manages to bring the 52 SUPER SERIES to Baiona in 2021

 

· After months of negotiations and hard work to meet all the requirements demanded by the organization, the Monte Real Club de Yates manages to make the 52 SUPER SERIES land in Galicia in 2021, coinciding with the Xacobeo Year

Fifteen years after the milestone that the departure of the Sailing Tour of the World from Vigo in 2005 meant for Galicia, the Monte Real Club de Yates once again puts the Galician community in the spotlight of the world nautical scene by including Baiona in the circuit of the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES.

After months of negotiations and hard work to meet all the requirements demanded by the organization, the historic club from Baiona has just confirmed that the considered “Fórmula 1 del mar” has agreed to compete in one of its events in the Galician Rías Baixas in June 2021, coinciding with the celebration of the Xacobeo Holy Year.

With high performance and great international prestige, the 52 SUPER SERIES are one of the three most important nautical events in the world, along with the America’s Cup and the World Sailing Tour. Between 10 and 12 teams of more than 8 nationalities of sailors from the 5 continents compete aboard boats with cutting-edge technology in tests that are held for months in different ports around the world.

Next year, one of those stages will be the 52 SUPER SERIES Baiona Sailing Week , which will be held for 8 days, between June 3 and 10, both inclusive. The first two days, on days 3 and 4, the crews will compete in training regattas in the area set aside for the competition, a place very close to the Atlantic Islands National Park, just in front of the Cíes Islands. The third day, June 5, is reserved for training in an already official regatta, although not scoring; and in the last 5 days, from 6 to 10, the competition itself will be held, with the regattas that will define the final classification from which the winners will emerge.

In addition to the sporting events, the Monte Real Club de Yates will organize multiple social events, such as meetings with the sailors, visits to the participating boats, conferences and talks about the competition or parties with the crews, among many others. It will also be a unique opportunity to rediscover Monte Real, one of the oldest clubs in Spain, with a long and prolific journey on the international nautical scene.

What was once the first Spanish club to present a challenge to the Copa América de Vela currently organizes some of the most outstanding regattas in Spain, such as the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy or the Conde de Gondomar Trophy. Recently, Monte Real has also announced the celebration in Baiona, in 2023, of the J80 Class World Cup, which will become the eighth World Cup event that the club has organized throughout its more than 50-year history.

A prestigious circuit considered the “Formula 1 of the sea”

The 52 SUPER SERIES were born from the hands of three businessmen in love with the sea and enthusiastic sailors: the American Doug DeVos (co-president of the prestigious marketing company Amway and owner of the Orlando Magic NBA basketball team), the Swedish Niklas Zennström (creator of numerous companies such as Skype or Kazaa) and the Argentine Alberto Roemmers (founder of Laboratorios Roemmers, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Argentina).

In 2012 they created a circuit that each year goes through five or six of the best places on the planet to haggle in tests in which an unparalleled fleet competes, made up of the best sailors in the world. On board the TP52, a type of 52-foot (15.85 m.) boat that is almost identical in its performance, the crews must make a difference with the technological innovations that they apply to sailboats and the expertise and skills of their teams. .

The organization of each of the stages of the 52 SUPER SERIES involves the movement of some 500 people, up to 12 megayachts and support boats. All that logistics, along with flight reservations, accommodation and restaurants; service companies and teams; they represent an expense that reaches more than 3 million euros, of which about two million stay in local companies and services in the place where they compete.

The extensive media coverage, both national and international, of the nautical event, reaches figures that, according to data from the organization, are around one billion hits in different media, with more than one million views on live television in the competition and close to 10 million impressions on the online channels of social networks. The regatta is also followed all over the world, with live images or through virtual reality systems from the website www.52superseries.com.

Another aspect to highlight of the 52 SUPER SERIES and the MRCYB will be their firm commitment to sustainability. The competition and its collaborating organization in this matter, 11th Hour Racing, will promote a series of actions in each of the regattas aimed at promoting environmental awareness through education and action. The commitment is to achieve a zero footprint of ecological impact, an effort that will be redoubled in the waters of the Ría de Vigo as it is of a very high environmental value.

The official announcement of the achievement of the 52 SUPER SERIES for Galicia by the Monte Real Yacht Club was made this morning at a press conference held in Baiona, which was attended by the General Director of the competition, the Spanish Agustín Zulueta, who signed the contract for the 52 SUPER SERIES Baiona Sailing Week together with the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez.

Diego Torrado from Vigo also took part in the press conference, a regular in the 52 SUPER SERIES who has been on the circuit for years as boat captain, previously with the Russian Bronenosec Gazprom and currently with the South African Phoenix 12. Monte Real adapts its summer sailing courses to the new health situation after COVID-19

· The Monte Real Club de Yates reopens its sailing school this summer adopting special hygiene, health and safety protocols due to COVID-19

The Monte Real Club de Yates will reopen its Sailing School this summer adopting special hygiene, health and safety protocols due to COVID-19. Although sailing is a low-risk sport, with hardly any physical contact and always practiced outdoors, the Baionese club has preferred to implement specific measures with the aim of guaranteeing the peace of mind of its users.

All coaches will be tested for COVID-19, and both they and the students will have to pass a temperature check at the entrance of the club; they will have to wear a mask whenever they are not in the water; after each use, all boats and materials will be disinfected; the boats will be distributed with the required separation; and the theoretical activities will be carried out abroad. It is also planned to promote personal hygiene measures such as hand washing, and the club’s facilities will be systematically disinfected.

Another of the measures to be applied involves a significant reduction in the ratio of students per boat and course, so places will be very limited and will be awarded in strict order of enrollment. Although the courses and activities will not start until June 29, the registration period is now open and you can request a place or information at the club.

The Monte Real summer campaign includes proposals so that children and adults can learn to sail and enjoy the sea in the Rías Baixas during the months of July, August and September. The Baionese club offers dinghy and cruising sailing courses, courses to learn to sail in one day, and sailing activities at sunset or to the Cíes Islands.

For the youngest members of the household, aged between 7 and 16, the Baionese club organizes Weekly light sailing courses , in the morning or afternoon, so that children can have a first contact with sailing or improve their technique with different types of boats if they already know how to sail.

For those over 16 years of age, Monte Real offers weekly cruising sailing courses , also with the option to choose a morning or afternoon schedule. Always accompanied by a coach from the club, with these courses the students learn to sail in the calm waters of the bay of Baiona and end up going out to the open sea to perfect their knowledge on board the sailboat.

And for those who want to learn to sail but do not have a week to attend the course, Monte Real also offers Courses to learn to sail in one day . During a day, from morning to afternoon, the participants will be able to learn the basic maneuvers to handle a boat.

Sailing to the Cíes Islands or at sunset are other proposals from the Monte Real Yacht Club for this summer , aimed above all at families or groups of friends who want to enjoy sailing while learning sailing concepts.

In the case of Sailing to the Cíes Islands, it is a one-day activity, from eleven in the morning to seven in the evening, which includes a sailing trip to the archipelago during which you learn to sail and disembark on the island to eat and have a guided visit to the natural park.

Between July and September there is also the possibility of Sunset Sailing , an activity with which to discover the keys to handling a sailing vessel as the day falls.

The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) has included Monte Real in the list of marinas in Galicia that this year obtained the distinction of ‘ blue flag marina ‘.

The club thus consolidates a distinction that it has maintained , uninterruptedly except for one year, since 1988 , with a specific environmental program that includes actions related to water, waste, energy consumption, safety or health, among others. Actions.

Baiona will host the J80 class sailing World Championship in 2023

· The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona has been chosen to organize a world championship that will be held for the first time in Galicia

· The J80 are one of the most numerous and successful classes in Spanish sailing with 190 units, of which 130 compete in different parts of the country.

· Spain also has some of the best J80 sailors in the world, such as the five-time world champion Rayco Tabares

· That of 2023 will be the fourth World Cup that lands in Spain after the events held in Santander (2009), Sotogrande (2016) and Getxo (2019)

The Galician fishing village of Baiona will host the J80 class sailing World Championship in 2023. This was announced this morning at a press conference by the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, who was very proud that the club had been chosen to organize such a prestigious sporting event.

This will be the first time that the J80 world championship is held in Galicia, a community that has been betting on this class for years with the holding of numerous competitions and the progressive increase in the number of this type of 8-meter boats, which are 29 at present and they have their main fleets in Baiona and A Coruña.

With the year already set on the agenda but with the exact date of the event still to be determined, at the Monte Real Club de Yates they are already beginning to pave the way to guarantee the success of the world championship. Over the next two years, the club’s board of directors plan to launch a full test drive to further push the J80 forward and encourage more owners to join the class.

To its usual J80 Autumn and Winter Leagues, in which the Galician fleet mainly participates; Other regattas of national importance will be added, such as the Spanish Cup or the Spanish Championship, which Monte Real hopes to organize before 2023.

In short, it is about focusing our gaze on the ultimate goal of achieving a world championship with the greatest possible participation of boats from different countries in the world, following in the footsteps of the other J80 world championships previously held in Spain, in Santander (2009 ), Sotogrande (2016) and Getxo (2019).

The General Secretary for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia, José Ramón Lete Lasa, transmitted to the club his congratulations by telephone and his commitment to support the World Cup as he was unable to attend the presentation because he was preparing the protocols for returning to activity for a large part of the sports sector of the Galician community.

A great step to strengthen the “Spanish Navy”

This new world championship awarded to Spain will undoubtedly be a unique opportunity to consolidate a class that is currently one of the largest in the country, with some 190 units (of which 130 compete in different parts of Spain). and very active fleets in Galicia, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

Spain also has some of the best J80 sailors in the world, such as the five-time world champion, Rayco Tabares from the Canary Islands; the Cantabrian Pablo Santurde, who currently holds the title after winning last year’s world championship in Getxo at the controls of the M&G Tressis; or the world runner-up in 2018, the Basque Iker Almandoz.

MRCYB’s commitment to the J80 class

The concession of the 2023 World Cup is an important accolade to the hard work of the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona to promote the J80 class in Galicia, for which it has been betting since 2012.

At that time, the club offered very advantageous conditions to the shipowners for the acquisition and mooring of the boats. It also created two specific leagues exclusively for the competition of these monotypes and included specific regattas for them in the club’s major competitions, such as the Conde de Gondomar Trophy or the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy.

Six years after the appearance of the first J80 in Baiona, the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation granted the club the organization of the 2018 Spanish Championship. And just two years later, this new and great leap arrives, towards the 2023 World Cup. Prior to Baiona, the World Cup event will stop in Denmark (2021) and Newport – United States (2022).

Postponed the Prima Vinia Trophy Galician Singles and Twos Championship

Motivated by the situation that arose as a result of the Covid-19 health crisis, the Monte Real Club de Yates has decided to postpone the Prima Vinia Trophy – Galician Solitaire Championship and A Dos – Rafael Olmedo Memorial to a date yet to be determined. to play next June 6.

From the Monte Real Club de Yates we greatly regret this situation but we understand that it is the responsibility of the club to guarantee the celebration of any sporting event with the maximum safety for the participants and in the best conditions for the development of both the regattas on the water and the social events on land.
